At the end of 2021, we welcomed Chicago-based Norfik onto our label with an attentive track [SERA010] that had us seeking more. Since then, the local beatmaker has extended himself to various pillars of the electronic music complex. He surely has learned to keep busy, from scoring short films and playing at local events, to showcasing his originals on household American labels such as TAR, Jollies Records, Juke Bounce Werk, and more.

Norfik tends to wear his influences on his sleeve with a high output of breakbeat-inspired tracks that celebrate his heavyweight predecessors. He is also unafraid to crank up the speed and tap into the world of jungle, drum & bass, and even breakcore. What makes his work stand out is his interest in ambient music, an external force that pushes him into a more emotive realm. The byproduct of his music genes is an authentic sound that may feel familiar to the avid dancefloor enthusiast, but genuine in its nature of being meaningful art from a real artist.

These attributes hold true to “Heartbreak EP,” a journey through lush ambiance met with rattling drum breaks. Norfik set out to make a collection of tracks that feel straightforward and transparent; what you hear is what you get. Unintended to be cohesive, the project feels woven together by raw emotion and shares the same theme throughout. With an influx of listeners crowding around the atmospheric jungle subculture, Norfik steers clear from the rest by delivering a recognizable yet unique body of work.

“Heartbreak EP” is composed of many different ideas that come together in a listenable package. The EP starts with “Greed,” a rhythmic introduction that captures listeners with rolling percussion. Tracks like “Denial” and “Into Action” do a wonderful job in displaying the contrast between thumping drums and atmospheric pads in the stereo space. The title track serves as the peak of the project, putting an emphasis on a tense buildup and rush of energy in its chorus. “Approach” concludes the EP with a track that touches on breakcore-fused antics, while staying persistent with the established ambiance.

One of the best qualities of “Heartbreak EP” is its ability to write its own story while still allowing space for interpretation. Norfik challenges his listeners to reflect on their own selves and remember what keeps them moving. Drenched in nostalgia yet holding itself to a high standard in modern production, the result is some of his best and most impactful work thus far.

Four years lay between An Angel In Alliance With Falsehood and Hate Devours Its Host, Valance Drakes’s brand new full-length for Amek Collective. This deeply personal record sets the producer on yet another path of narrative-driven musical alchemy. Without a doubt, Hate Devours Its Host is Valance Drakes’ most atmospheric work to date. Multilayered ambient soundscapes and spiraling melodic debris are used not as a backdrop but as the backbone of the record. The producer's signature intricate rhythmic structures, subterranean basslines, and hypnotizing sample manipulation are entangled in this drifting sonic environment. All these elements become an inseparable and emotionally intense whole.

We watched this album grow and unfold. As with all things Valance Drakes, the music in Hate Devours Its Host seems that it can be experienced in a breath but truly grasping everything that lies within requires patience and attention to detail. All elements in Hate Devours Its Host are carefully considered, meticulously organized, and purposeful. This full-length is another showcase not just of Drakes' sound design and compositional craftsmanship but an honest representation of life as beautiful or punishing as it can get.

"Post-digital Research" aims at exploring what, in the afterglow of digital art and culture, lies beyond the digital as a form of existence. We are witnessing fundamental changes: we no longer distinguish between online and off-line or analogue and digital practices. It has become embedded in almost every contemporary aesthetic practice. In this, our focus of attention somewhat shifts: we become interested in the renewed significance of the technologies we left behind (the role of print, magnetic tapes, floppy disks, etc.).
We do not wish to claim a research interest in a future predetermined by the digital, nor do we want to do away with the digital. Instead we will attempt to explore how to practice research in a culture where the digital has become a cultural residue that consumes resources, even producing new forms of trash and overloaded forms of existence. the aesthetics and politics of the digital "during the transition to new cultural forms are still unknown to us". With this call for "Post-digital Research" we do not wish to set a particular direction for research, but rather provide a speculative and experimental framework for research in a post-digital culture. We therefore invite proposals that take diverse perspectives to open up some of the paradoxes of contemporary thinking and technologically-informed artistic practice after the digital
