Brackish Days / Spend Time

Luca 'Brackish Days' [SBK Recordings]

Rising duo Circumference is made up of Bristol based uni students & music producers Kit Jones and Finlay Freshney-Lee, who deliver gut punching soundscapes that will literally stop you in your skank. The young pair have an impressive 10 years of production experience between them, and have been releasing music on labels like Flexout, Overview and Soulvent over the last 2 years. Their latest output provides further insight into their awe-inspiring approach to dance music, which certainly leaves an impression to say the least.  

Title track ‘Breathe’ crackles to life with that satisfying match stroke followed by an intense build through a seemingly endless series of crescendos. Orchestral, hard-hitting thumps of percussion are met with gritty vocals and an impending sense of doom. This one is likely to turn your next rave into a 999-call with immediate effect, and will most certainly have some of you reaching for your inhaler.

Thankfully, ‘Pyramid’ builds a more subtle foundation, with some welcomingly calmer tones to salve its predecessor's onslaught. The build-up offers more delightful synth work and a more traditional structure, which are met with whooshing, satisfying sidechaining and playful percussive elements. 

The murky atmosphere of ‘SEE’ yet again switches up the vibe, with a more dystopian intro, followed by week-altering, half-time flavours. Drop number two progresses the synth wonderment with an even more risque rhythm section switch up will have you grinning. This Ivy Lab-esque curveball proves that this pair are far from one-hit-wonders and worth considering as artists to watch as 2022 looms. 

Finally ‘Breathe (Out)’ offers a real insight into the duos’ penchant and appreciation for more classically coined and intricate instrumentation. This heart wrenching reprise delivers just as much force as its brother, but with an unexpected twist in its drum pattern. Stress-inducing suspense levels are met with more tense strings and roars of bass which are a marvel all of their own and will certainly have you frowning on the tube and the dancefloor alike. 

Breathe in deep and appreciate this cleverly constructed, thought provoking EP from 2 of d&b’s most exciting prospects, landing in all good stores on the 12th of November.

Continuing the Most Violent Year Album project, NC-17 returns with the second instalment of this epic trilogy of long players.

Each part of this album series was written during a year in which the global pandemic took hold, intense political disruption created unstable futures and media outlets across the world became further polarised and outraged, creating vast swathes of angered and confused people, unsure of who to trust. This second edition encapsulates that paranoid, tense, terror - moving on from the looming dread of the unknown that formed the basis of Part 1.

Beginning each part of the album with an entirely new batch of tunes, Part 2 represents 13 of the best cuts from over 50 tracks written just for this chapter of this epic trilogy. By beginning with a fresh palette and creating entirely new music for each section NC-17 was able to keep each part distinct, and the music contained within this speaks exactly to the feelings he experienced during the project.

Alongside 8 incredible solo productions are collaborations with some of the dnb scene’s most notable talents, 5 exceptional tracks featuring Kolectiv & OB1, Myth, Philth, Dr. Apollo and Logam.

There’s something inspirational about Lakeway’s refusal to accept the notion of style boundaries. Over the years, he has been one of the champions of innovating Bass music in the UK - with releases on some of the biggest labels in the game.

As Lakeway enters Version 2.0 of his musical career, we are honoured to help bring his newest release, the “No Escape” EP, to the world.

A combination of three heavyweight club tracks based around the 170bpm axis and a slower introspective grime collaboration with PAV4N, the EP follows no musical directive and is remarkably unique.

‘Lighter,’ ‘Unrequited Dub,’ and ‘All Massive All Crew” are all peak-time medicine - unapologetic big-room bangers with an experimental edge. On ‘No Escape,’ Lakeway teams up with Foreign Beggar’s front man PAV4N, to record an altogether different piece of work. Artfully combining elements of both ethereal melancholy and invasive industrial grime, together they explore one of the many sonic hairline fractures that exist between traditional musical tropes.
