Deconstruction Of A Persona

A rising talent from the heart of São Paulo, Dizrupt, returns to Dispatch following 2023’s “Rackle EP”. A key figure in the Brazilian drum and bass scene, his innovative approach to drum and bass combines his love of experimental recording techniques with a vibe-first, upfront energy that runs throughout his tracks.  

The "Barko EP" developed from a live guitar recording session and quickly took shape, taking inspiration from the resulting sounds which morphed into the unique sounds of the granular, percussive beast that is the title track. Each track on this finely textured release effortlessly blends infectious danceability with crisp, clean production for maximum impact. 

As an inspiration for the flourishing South American DNB community he continues to be top of the export list, bringing the whole scene onboard the good ship Dizrupt.

UK-born and now based in New Zealand, (Maxwell) Monika is known for his expressive drum and bass tracks on well-known labels like Spearhead Records, Shogun Audio, and Fokuz Recordings. He’s just announced the release of his latest project, the ‘Off World’ EP—a sci-fi-inspired journey through drum & bass, breakbeat, jungle, and ambient music.

‘Off World’ is a spiritual follow-up to ‘Yikes FM’ (which dropped in 2021), and it’s the second instalment in Monika’s ‘MonTape’ series. This series is all about showcasing his creations that step outside the usual 174 bpm, club-ready realm. With ‘Off World,’ Monika dives deep into a retro, sci-fi vibe, drawing direct inspiration from classic novels like Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ and Dan Simmons’ ‘Hyperion.’ The cover art and track titles aim to capture that mysterious feeling you get from one of those dusty old books. Musically, Monika has channelled artists like Om Unit, Overmono, John Carpenter, and Vangelis to create a cinematic, analog mood that’s still rooted in the drum-led world of club music.

His signature sound comes through on the title track, “Broken,” which features melancholic piano chords, cinematic pads, snappy drums, and a warm sub baseline that gives the song its soul.  “Twitch” is up next with its reverse pads, echoing synth stabs, ethereal vocals, and rolling drums.  Next, “Dance With You,” takes over and features a more uplifting vibe with its funky guitar riffs, positive vocals, jazzy stabs, and rolling sub bassline.  “Visuals,” finishes things off in style and features punchy breaks, eerie strings, steadily ticking percussion, and a smooth, sustained baseline.
