Astronauts 'In My Direction' - single released 19/1/15. 

One of the highlights from the debut Astronauts album ‘Hollow Ponds’, ‘In My Direction’ is a gorgeous, cascading slice of dark, folky pop, with Dan’s breathy vocal harmonies - and call-and-responses with his friend and collaborator Michael Cranny – floating reassuringly over an intertwining acoustic guitar flow and taut percussive backbone. As with all the best Astronauts material, it’s hooky, emotionally involving, and mildly unsettling, all at once. 

The brilliant video for the song was conceived and made by Armenia-based production company Manana Films, after they approached Dan about collaboration earlier this year. The result is an idiosyncratic, unforgettable video starring Armenian actor Andranik Lavchyan rhythmically wending his way around the capital Yerevan, confusing everyone he encounters. 

‘In My Direction’ is backed with a remix of the ‘Hollow Ponds’ track ‘Everything’s A System, Everything’s A Sign’ from Kieran Mahon, a minimal/ambient composer and long-time friend of Dan’s, who creeps up silently behind the original and injects it with a swirling, insistent menace.

„Latitude“ klingt zunächst täuschend simpel, in Wahrheit aber steckt das Album voller kleiner, manchmal auch niedlicher Details, die auf einen bunten, internationalen Bogen deuten, der Kontinente überquert – ganz wie Lemaitre. Dabei klingt „Latitude“ nicht etwa komplett unfokussiert, wohl aber nach schwer erkennbaren Einflüssen. Man findet hier verklausulierte Erinnerungen an Sufjan Stevens, an weit zurück liegende Sounds von Serge Gainsbourg, aber auch an Nicholas Jaar. . „Sie haben mich dazu gebracht“ sagt Lemaitre, „Texturen als Werkzeuge beim Komponieren zu nutzen. Mir gefällt der Gedanke, alle Instrumente eines Songs als perkussive Elemente zu betrachten und sie gegeneinander antreten zu lassen.“ Daran sei nicht allein seine bolivianische Herkunft Schuld, „das hat auch mit meiner Liebe zu elektronischer Musik zu tun. Ich liebe es, die Geräusche fallender Münzen oder Cornflakes-Kartons aufzunehmen wie in ’Jacques Cousteau’ oder alte Reisekoffer zu sampeln wie in ’Pandora Express’.“

Ob minimalistische Akkustiksongs oder elektronischer Art Pop dabei entsteht, ist ihm vorerst nicht so wichtig. “Man kann sich letztendlich auch nicht vornehmen was man heute Nacht träumen wird…”
