Another composition recorded before the war. I hope one day I will return to my home studio. Any support from you is much appreciated on these extremely hard times for our country, our family. 
I could have recorded much new music for the last 9 months... unless russians came to our yard to "save" us with their tanks, missiles, bombs and war planes at 4 a.m. on Feb 24th. And yes, they saved us from our house, from our normal life, from our dreams and plans. They saved my elderly parents from their home and peaceful life in retiring, saved my daughter from happy childhood, from school, from her friends and vacation by the sea. We'll never forget and never forgive it! I'm sure that russia will get what it deserves - each rocket they launch on Ukraine will turn to another 10 years of disaster for their cowardly people.

I arrived in London in early ‘71 and landed on the Holland Road, Shepherd’s Bush not long after.
My good pal Julie Lewis (from Durham) with whom I’d worked with in Sydney, had digs there and invited me to stay. Nonetheless I found it a challenging place to be after Sydney, Summer, beaches, family and gigs. Amongst Julie’s record collection was Nick Drake’s 'Bryter Later' which brought solace to me as I often felt very alone and completely at a loss as to how to navigate London town.

Years later I was to learn that Freddie Mercury was living just a few doors down from us on the Holland Road...no I never knew him...but when I wrote the lyric it seemed apt to pay homage to Freddie and our collective dreams. I’m so happy with Cripple Club’s interpretation of the lyrics, bringing to life a musical collage that depicts the highs and lows of living on the Holland Road through my first cold winter! From my heart; thank you Terry & Gary Reeves; you are two soulful & gifted brothers; I feel so indebted to you both and to Hans Albers for his powerful musical contributions. We continue to move forward.  The world can be difficult, frustrating, complex and sad. Yet……(queue long pause as we look up at the starry sky together) it can be quite beautiful despite this reality. A reality inside a reality. I catch glimpses of this world in the spaces in-between my chattering, worried, planning, catastrophizing incessant thoughts. It is the feeling that sits behind the other ones. It is the faintest echo of peace and happiness that can't quite be articulated without sounding corny.  Some of you know what I am talking about.  Music can tease this feeling out from hiding too. Life is so short and it seems to speed up with each passing year. A summer in child time can last years. Years in adult time can feel like moments.  We are star dust. We are myth makers. We are ………something that is very good.  You are something very good and my wish is for you to see this my friend for this New Year and the ones to follow. This song has a sweet laid-back arpeggiated Hawaiian ambiance counter-balanced by a reversed sampled pad effect that creates a more surreal edgy vibe that hints at the story to follow. This pad was created using recorded samples of reverb tails created from the very instruments playing in the song itself. This sample is then reversed and carved up a bit. This texture adds a strange, yet familiar feel and gluing effect that I liked. 

The percussive sweetener details and the push and pull of room space as the song progresses were strong artistic design focus areas. They help to create and solidify the moonlit beach fire atmosphere. This crucible helped the luminosity of the vocal story-telling to come to life. Later I add a Chinese Yangqin instrumental section just because I could.

Some time ago, I needed to do some thinking about my DTM system and was reviewing my music data.  At that time, I suddenly noticed this song by Mrs Rhymes.  About a year ago, I think.  I had a preliminary recording of my guitar to go along with this wonderful piece.  Remembering that, I played it back and listened.  I didn't like my guitar playing, even though it was just a temporary recording for notes.  I don't think the sounds and phrases I used at that time match the original song.  Compared to that, the original song is still great.  So I grabbed my guitar and started recording.  A few hours later, I was in the process of uploading my freshly finished work here.

The key of this song is C#, and I think that what we should be aware of as a performance style is "B♭m/C# pentatonic".
I do not mix tapping, sweeping, or other fancy playing techniques in my guitar playing with this outstanding piece. I tried to keep the accompaniment very simple. This excellent piece, which I picked up as an example this time, will be finished with two things in mind: "B♭m/C# pentatonic". However, in a blues scale song, one song uses four pentatonic forms. Therefore, first of all, I believe that it is very important to be aware of "two things" on a daily basis and to practice guitar playing repeatedly.

And before we understand it in words, what we value most is the encounter with works and artists that we can continue to enjoy playing along with our favorite music as many times as we want, even ten times if necessary. Right?

I have always wanted to make a rap metal track with Heartscore so I was super excited when he reached out with this banging hip-hop metal fusion production. The lyrics are inspired behind the Hawaiian legend of Nanaue the Shark Man. I have some Hawaiian blood in me, so I figured I would rock it, lol! I am super blessed to still be working on music with my friend Heartscore.

Over the past few years, I’ve discovered several unique and delightful souls in our community; and the song I get to share today is my first collaboration with one of my favorite Soundcloud troubadours, Tanisha Jackland (Lady of Fire Poetry - https://soundcloud.com/ladyofire, https://ladyoffirepoetry.bandcamp.com/).

I messaged her a few months ago, hoping for a little inspirational pointer to one of her favorite open collab offerings. And to my great surprise and excitement, she offered to create something entirely new for the project. In addition, she introduced me to her muse for this particular piece, Emily Levine. Needless to say, Emily will be the subject for this write-up (so thanks, Tanisha… for that introduction; and for getting to create this song with you. I had a lot of fun with this one). :)

So who was Emily Levine? Emily started her career in 1977 as a stand-up comedian. But the world wasn’t ready to take female comedians seriously, so in 1980 she became a television writer and producer. Over the next decade, she worked on intelligent sitcoms, including ‘Designing Women’ and ‘Love and War’; and comedy pilots for CBS, NBC, ABC and HBO.

Despite an admirable career as a Screenwriter, Emily’s largest transformation came in the form of a tumor found on her pituitary gland. 

Before the diagnosis, she began experiencing a wide array of symptoms like extreme fatigue, brain fog, osteoarthritis, carpel tunnel, acromegaly (where your extremities grow abnormally large) and a lack of interest in the activities she enjoyed. 

Eventually, the tumor was discovered and successfully removed. But during her illness and recovery she began to explore more modern, scientific ideologies. This is where she had some of her greatest life epiphanies; my personal favorite being the realization that we need to evolve our thinking from Newton’s Universe to the Universe of Relativity, Chaos Theory and Quantum Physics. 

Here’s her basic formula. The Newtonian Universe is one of ‘either/or’; either this is true or that is true, but both can’t be true. If I’m right, you must be wrong. It’s very linear, black and white thinking; and it’s the hurdle that the human race can’t seem to get past.

But if you give Quantum Physics a spin, the formula becomes ‘and-and-and’ (notice the dashes rather than slashes). For example, light can be a wave and a particle, depending on how you look at it. I can be right, and you can be right, depending on how we look at it. That single idea transforms very rigid, absolute thinking (off/on, right/wrong) into something far my dynamic and probability based. It gives the human race the breathing room we need to help us solve our current polarizations; a beautiful opportunity for transforming the old paradigm into something that helps us evolve our thinking and move forward as a species.
