this is so cool; enjoying all over again.  I really like this slick Psych Funk approach.

Love that bass intro. The main synth melody is so Hypnoitic. The track has great flow with a seamless transition to the jazzy piano parts. Fab work mate.

The music/vocals here creates an angsty tension of the conveyor belt nightmare of being trapped in a circumstantial world we did not choose.

The situation in Ukraine is heartbreaking and incomprehensible……it ain't right.

I saw one specific example (of many) in a news article that really got to me about the effects of this senseless war on ordinary people.  People just trying to live their ordinary human lives in peace, coming from towns probably similar to the one you or I may have grown up in.  Instead, they are ripped from this existence because a psychopath decides he needs to acquire a new piece of dirt and a bigger crown.  He will level cities and mow down innocent people to get it.  

I recently watched a news feature covering a shell shocked 15 year old boy who had lost his mother in an awful attack.  He was still obviously stunned and coping.  Towards the end of the interview it became clear that one of his coping mechanisms was just wanting to play his guitar for awhile to get through the dark nights ahead….to hold on to a strand of something normal.  This hit me quite hard as it is probably a characteristic I too would have fallen back on as coping mechanism (a keyboard in my case)

 The other powerful thing that came through was his un-questioned determination to still go back and rebuild the city one day. This seemed to be just a given.  This was going to happen. This steadfast resolve and heroism in the Ukrainian people in general is moving and inspiring and probably has a lot to do with what they went through and achieved in the 2013/2014 timeframe when they ousted a Putin placed dictator the first time.  The Netflix documentary called Winter on Fire captures this struggle for independence very well.  They will not give up this hard won independence easily.

This all influenced my latest song creation.  

Thank You for your courage Andriy and I wish you strength, resilience and resolve to keep moving forward.  This song is dedicated to you and your family.

The lyrics seem to be about my general aversion toward the momentous amount of shitty events that took place in 2020.  Perhaps a psychoanalyst would see even more in them. The lyrics are a bit esoteric.  My sub-conscious was definitely spewing on this one.  I kneaded the words and phrases against the texture and flow of the driving pulse of the  musical content. What emerged is something special. A real rocker!  The song slowly builds, creating an incredible sonic vibe with many subtle aural sweet spots.

Happy New Year and even more importantly, Happy Martin Luther King weekend.  

We continue to move forward.  The world can be difficult, frustrating, complex and sad. Yet……(queue long pause as we look up at the starry sky together) it can be quite beautiful despite this reality. A reality inside a reality. I catch glimpses of this world in the spaces in-between my chattering, worried, planning, catastrophizing incessant thoughts. It is the feeling that sits behind the other ones. It is the faintest echo of peace and happiness that can't quite be articulated without sounding corny.  Some of you know what I am talking about.  Music can tease this feeling out from hiding too. Life is so short and it seems to speed up with each passing year. A summer in child time can last years. Years in adult time can feel like moments.  We are star dust. We are myth makers. We are ………something that is very good.  You are something very good and my wish is for you to see this my friend for this New Year and the ones to follow. This song has a sweet laid-back arpeggiated Hawaiian ambiance counter-balanced by a reversed sampled pad effect that creates a more surreal edgy vibe that hints at the story to follow. This pad was created using recorded samples of reverb tails created from the very instruments playing in the song itself. This sample is then reversed and carved up a bit. This texture adds a strange, yet familiar feel and gluing effect that I liked. 

The percussive sweetener details and the push and pull of room space as the song progresses were strong artistic design focus areas. They help to create and solidify the moonlit beach fire atmosphere. This crucible helped the luminosity of the vocal story-telling to come to life. Later I add a Chinese Yangqin instrumental section just because I could.

DRAWBRIDGE was created at my home studio and referenced a hugely popular pop song called Driver's License by Olivia Rodrigo. The song sounds nothing like Driver's License but drew inspiration from this song's sound textures and arrangement. DRAWBRIDGE was crafted to deliver an emotional tension and buildup in a similar fashion.

Phil Chris sent me this song, which was little more than a beat and some chords. I then added some bass, guitar, piano, organ, and synth. Then, I sent it to Tez to work his magic on the board. he came up with two very distinct mixes. The first one, which I already posted, has two beats in it, so it sounds like a heartbeat, and it is very guitar heavy. This mix really focuses on the organ. It almost sounds like a different song, imo. I hope you all enjoy the remix.

What's this song about Dave?

This song is in the indie-electronic domain but has a certain jazz vibe with the bass. It has a not easily defined yet original flow and feel. It speaks to our societal and work related anxieties; always asking us to do a bit more, move a bit faster. We will Take That Hill the first time and maybe even the second..... but after that it's time to consider options.

Hey Folks…. Hope all is well wherever you are. In that relative sense of the world being as it is right now. A cold Spring here so far. A little snow, freezing temps, but that will change soon with the new heat dome dropping down upon us from the north. So instead of composing songs, I have been outside quite a bit these past few weeks… I tilled and began planting the vegetable garden. Snow and sugar snap peas are germinating. I planted 3 varieties of lettuce plants from seed I grew and saved from the past few years. If you don’t know… Lettuce ‘goes to seed’ when the plant ‘bolts’ by sending up a 3 foot flower stalk, which looks pretty cool. I usually let some lettuce bolt each year. A while back, I used to market about 300 heads of lettuce a year, but now just grow 50 or so heads for salad. That’s a lot of salad…. I also planted leeks from seed plants I grew last year, after letting the leeks overwinter. I was dreaming about potato-leek soup, when I first planted leeks, and well, the dream was better than the soup. The garlic patch is up, from last autumn’s planting. I call the patch ‘The Garlic Monster’, as it has grown in size over the years, the unruly beast that it is. There were some overwintered Swiss chard plants that I dug up and transplanted to a side spot in the garden, hoping to get some seeds this year from those plants. Beets, carrots and rutabagas have not germinated yet. (It’s been cold.) I dug up 3 large rhubarb plants I grew from seed that I collected, and moved them to a new bed as the spot they were in was a spur of the moment decision that wasn’t working. I do harvest and prepare rhubarb each year, but it is definitely an acquired taste, so I tend to compost some of what I pick. (Most of it…haha.) I transplanted 2 aspens and a pie cherry sapling that grew up too close to the house. The main aspen and cherry trees are easily 10 yards away from where the saplings were. I am always amazed at how tree roots grow in search of water, this time for dripping water off the house. That phenomenon is called Hydrotropism. I moved the saplings to an open area of the yard where I hope they will sprout many more trees to create a mini grove. OK… that’s enough gardening stories for now…. Don’t you think? I need some for the next song… hahaha. So with the colder mornings, I have been recording songs every other day or so. I had 3 songs recorded and well and they were all sketchy/wonky in parts. One, a true story, was about this dude threatening me with a handgun. (That song was way too political)… another was a sobby, tear-jerker of a lament, OMG… sure I felt that way, but seriously dude? The third was a loud and dissonant slide song, which happens when I need to burn off some negative energy. I was bummed after listening to all of them, so I did this song, as a last ditch effort to salvage my musical dignity. Ha! So let me know what you think… Thanks. Music for Danse Etoile Ballet (www.danseetoile.org) who will be performing The Little Mermaid Ballet January 2024 in Colorado.
On her 15th birthday, the Little Mermaid swam to the ocean surface. A large ship with three masts lay calmed on the water nearby.  The Little Mermaid swam close to the cabin windows and saw a number of well-dressed people within, among them was a young prince, the most beautiful of them all.... Soon, the waves rose high and heavy clouds darkened the sky: a dreadful storm was approaching. The waves rose high as mountains and the ship dived like a swan between them. At length, the ship groaned and creaked, the thick planks gave way under the lashing of the sea, the main mast snapped asunder like a reed and the ship lay over on her side, the water rushing in..... Paraphrased from "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen. 
For piano, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, tubular bells, timpani, virtual instruments, sound effects and percussion.

The Little Mermaid  - The Shipwreck in the Storm

This is a song that JJ came up with on the electric piano and shared with the rest of us. He's done a significant portion of the songwriting for the Eclectic Collective, and always gives us quality songs, to which are easy to add our voices. When he sent it to us, he had a rough bass on there that sounded like Lust for Life. Ken came up with a killer and appropriate beat, which, if you can picture Lust For Life, included a lot of accentuated bass kicks. So, I took and went with that, and came up with a funky bass line. Ken and he kicked it back and forth a few times till they linked up. Then JJ added some funky ass organ and trippy retro synth to spice it up.
  Then it was time to send it to the guitarist. Tez laid down some smoking lead solos throughout, with his signature fiery guitar tone and amazing licks. Then Stephen funked it up even more with a fonky-ass wah guitar track.
  Ken produced and mixed this one for us, and what an excellent job he did, too. This was so much fun to create. We all hope you enjoy listening to our jam as much as we did playing it.
