One of the greats by Bob Dylan in 1962.   This song has been covered by Elvis, Eric Clapton, Waylon , Willie and Merle, John Mayer, Ed Sheenan ,Peter Paul and Mary,  and the list goes on.   Wow- this song has been with me a long time.  I can't do it justice but this is a simple version that I enjoy playing.

What could be more inspiring for a song than a beautiful fall day with a warm breeze blowing in an open window? Of course, the song should be composed at a relaxed tempo. Japanese instruments, a pan pipe, and bongo drums were added to create the right atmosphere. This song is the debut, for experienced singer and songwriter Alice Weiler, for vocals and assisting with lyrics on my compositions. Throughout this song, Alice sings harmony and multiple layers with her main vocal track. Len Cagle returns to the studio with his tenor saxophone, performing an improvisation at the bridge and playing “over” the vocal track in the second verse. This is the first time that I used an iPad for the initial creative phase of a composition. It was refreshing to have the freedom to compose away from the studio.

This song is dedicated to my little grandson Abraham, who loves dance music and cheese.  After hearing him singing "Cheese, Baby!" for a couple weeks, it seemed natural to write a song. A tough music critic, he approves of this music. The only endorsement I need.

Love From The Heart (ft. Anna Rader - vocals)

One topic of interest I am perennially attracted to 
is the study of consciousness.
I imagine that we all become aware of our universe 
on many planes of existence,
such that our individual physical bodies 
are but a momentary fluctuation of that awareness.

A recurring concept is one of always being 
on the threshold of a waking dream.
In building this composition, 
I was also reminded of the title of a song
written by one of my favorite masters, Johann Sebastian Bach:
“Wachet Auf”, or in English, “Wake Up”.
Alternatively, we have also called it “Sleepers Awaken”.

I wanted to create some new (to my ears) instruments,
that would seem to evoke a sense 
of just coming into that wakeful state,
and picking up on the theme of Bach’s melody, 
just as the song is ending.

I also wanted to try to alter the chords somewhat
to generate a set of harmonics,
which might correspond to that same mood of wakefulness.

In searching for an image for this composition,
this photograph, which seems so like a painting,
left me feeling unsure whether I was seeing reality or illusion.

I first heard this tune from the great Tony Rice (bluegrass flat picker). I immediately wanted to pick it and I immediately realized that I was no
Tony and just could not keep up with him.  I still love this tune and had to slow it way down and adapt.   Just picking and singing.

Based on Mozart's Requiem in D minor, Sequentia, Introit (3rd movement). This is the last piece that Mozart composed but was unfinished at his death on December 5th 1791. Mozart finished the first movement of the Mass, the Introit, but starting with the Kyrie (2nd movement) and the Sequentia (3rd movement) Mozart only left detailed drafts for the music.

It started out innocently enough: "What could I write for piano at 180 bpm?" Then I started playing around with my voice tone using a popular plugin. So why not add a sub-bass track to test out my new speaker? After many bells and whistles later and massive editing cuts, one gets a frantic two minute track, not to be confused with Mozart's Minute Waltz. :-)Perhaps this reflects being stuck in my house for a couple months. The music composition was originally written for a ballet production about the artist Henri Matisse. The trumpet was chosen when writing the lead part, since I consider it to be a very colorful instrument. Bruce Klepper's (https://soundcloud.com/bruce-klepper-1) arrangement skill brings out some rich harmonies in the saxophones and brass sections. He also worked on improving the overall brass timbres. I was inspired in writing this song by posting the word “colorful” over my keyboard for a few weeks.

The lyrical message is to not hold one’s emotions inside oneself when upset, but to find a trustworthy person in whom to confide. There is a lot of pain in the world and we are here to help each other.

“...it’s goodbye my friend, Like all earthly things, they must come to an end. But love and thoughts go on.” I continue to explore layering the vocals. There are two main musical themes that converge in the ending. In the second theme Alice and I do some “scat” vocals combined with Dudly Ulysses’ driving drums, Tim Breon’s rapid acoustic bass improvisation, and Len Cagle’s jazzy saxophone. A lot is going on, which is challenging and fun. The overall test for me is: does it “swing?” I believe the answer is “yes!”
