Gorge - Erotic Soul (2020 Rework)

In times of trouble and uncertainty music can provide great relief for the soul, and DAVIE’s triumphant Defected debut ‘Testify’ does exactly that. A joyous introduction to the Brooklyn artist, this single demonstrated an ability to strike the balance between classic and contemporary sounds seamlessly. Now, the record DAVIE himself describes as, “a dance song, not a gospel song,” gets four brand new remixes. Up first, Peppermint Jam boss Mousse T. plays to the gospel elements of the original, with deep, powerful chords and rhythmic claps, bringing a snapping groove to the cut. Next, London talent KDA goes for a clubbier sound, looping the vocal and raising the BPM. Alan Dixon’s funk-fuelled remix follows, with melodic keys and irresistible horns. Finally, undisputed master of the disco edit Danny Krivit delivers his sublime club-friendly version, extending the original Danny maintains the feel, with subtle adjustments that give it a more refined sound.

Horse Meat Disco unveil the latest preview of their forthcoming album ‘Love & Dancing’ with ‘Message To The People’, featuring one of the main co-artists on the LP, Amy Douglas, alongside soul trio Dames Brown. A record that started as an adaptation of the Shirley Caesar original, recorded in the studio with the Dames; Horse Meat Disco and Luke Solomon then headed to Amy’s native Brooklyn, where she wrote her verses sat at the piano for this sublime disco jam. This package features remixes from some of the genre’s most revered artists, each turning their hand at this labour of love. Opening with Horse Meat Disco, Amy Douglas and Dames Brown’s original, unrefuted master of the edit Danny Krivit delivers a blissful, club-friendly extended version next, making full use of the longer playtime with a funk-fuelled, journey-like mix. Chicago legend Kelly G. follows with his Get On Down Dub, stripped back with lingering organ chords that channel a gospel house vibe. Finally, the Key-A-Pella closes out the release, an essential DJ tool that allows Amy and Dames Brown’s vocals to really shine.

Following stellar singles ‘I’m Not Defeated’ and ‘Future Romance’, Bronx-born singer-songwriter Fiorious returns to Glitterbox with a stunning cover of Aly-Us’ ‘Follow Me’. Representing the dawning of a new chapter of dance talent, Fiorious’ indelible vocals have earnt him high-profile fans ranging from Honey Dijon to Cassius. ‘Follow Me’ has a more stripped-back feel to previous Fiorious output, his sultry smooth vocal back dropped with deep, swelling synths and a relaxed groove. House legend Roger Sanchez’s remix opens the package, a fitting artist to take on the duty after remixing the 1992 original. Roger’s mix provides a clubbier feel, with jacking bass and powerful keys sure to captivate any dancefloor. The original record, a homage to NYC’s rich Latin American dance culture, was as slick, soulful and groove-filled as expected from two generations of the city’s finest. Now one of dance music’s most in demand artists turns his hand at the Nuyorican house cut, bringing his signature club-ready sound to the original. Maintaining Marc E. Bassy’s hypnotic vocal to a more stripped-back effect, Dom’s use of adrenaline-fuelled builds and an addictive bassline gives his mix of ‘Let It Go’ a new edge. It is no surprise the powerhouse coupling of Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers paired with Dom Dolla would make for a record brimming with house music muscle and production finesse.

2020 is a landmark year for ZR.

It's 30 years since the label began and also the release of the 300th single!. Rather than an EP containing remixes of ZR favourites to mark the occasion we decided to make a brand new original song the 300th release...

'Power of the Mind' contains a very pertinent lyric about thinking for yourself and not being fooled by fake news. The throaty vintage soul vocals come from the Valentine Brothers (who wrote and released Money’s Too Tight to Mention in 82 - later covered by Simply Red to give them their debut hit). Add in some classic house piano and this something that sounds like it could have been one of those big vocal records on Strictly Rhythm in the mid 90s.
