Last month on the 13th of October, we invited house music hero & all round good guy Derrick Carter to bring his 'Derrick Does Disco' party to the Sub Club helping to celebrate GLASGAY! 20th Anniversary.

The source of many a man-crush (particularly from our local DJ geeks and record freaks) our sexy affair with Derrick has spanned a good couple of decades. Perhaps it’s his desirable physique, that intense beaded brow around 2am or his disarmingly charming manliness from the moment we met him off the plane.

Either way we’re always hot for him and so was everyone in the crowd who joined us as we got down and dirty in a darkened room and showed each other some serious loving, with no strings attached till 3am.

With Derrick in control for the full four hours we had to get the roadblocks out. Here is an hour of this amazing set specially picked out by the one man block party himself.

Dan Heartman Ft Lolleata Holloway - Relight My Fire DFP remix snippet

Mixing up modern tracks, classic disco and some of his own productions, Frankie plays a party set of extended mixes, kicking off with his and Eric Kupper’s sumptuous arrangement of Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff. Taking in original disco with Lou Rawl’s “You’ll Never Find A Love Like Mine”, the soulful, gospel tinges are put up against the tougher elements and classic pianos  of Spencer Parker & Dan Beaumont’sThe Look.

With classic vocal American garage tunes like the tightly wrought Dbow “Get Involved” and the effortlessly but sublimely tuned dub of Eric Kupper’s “Disco Revenge” midway through the set, Frankie then turns to a Hacienda classic, the David Morales Defmix version of Juliet Robert’s “Caught In The Middle”, a record which had the original Hacienda spellbound back in 1993.

Taking it deeper to the close, the deep bassline and twisted soul of Alfredo Azzetto’s remix of “The Word Is Love” is followed by  Frankie’s homage to New York’s Sound Factory with his tribal disco remix of Sounds Of Blackness “The Pressure Pt 1”, itself a Knuckles classic. To end, he then brings in Black Legend’s, “You See The Trouble With Me” before rounding up with Robert Gaez’s re-rub of Frankie’s “Get Over U”.

A great set from one of house music’s undoubtedly legendary figures, This Is Frankie Knuckles.

Southlight is the House & Nu Disco project of Andrew Young and Damien Goundrie. Damien and Andrew met at SAE Sydney - where Damien teaches Electronic Music Production and Andrew studied. Wanting to take their music and production skills out of the classroom and onto the dance floor, Damien and Andrew formed Southlight.

Following on from the phenomenal success of the recent “Italo House” and “Remixed With Love” compilation plus more Joey Negro compiled albums including “GoGo Get Down”, “Backstreet Brit Funk”, “Destination Boogie” and the ever-popular Soul of Disco series Z Records continues to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and boogie. Now it’s the return of the highly regarded Under The Influence series with Volume Four compiled by Nick The Record.
 
From the slow mo disco of State of Grace’s ‘Touching The Times (Dub)’ to the sun-kissed calypso vibe of Boogsie’s ‘Cant You See Me’, Charlie Mike Sierra’s space-disco on ‘On The Moon’ and the more soulful, funk side such as Betty & Beverly Prudhomme’s ‘Tut Tut Twins (Part One)’ and fun(k) disco of cuts like Ronnie Jones ‘Video Games’ we find Nick The Record’s highly infectious selection getting us once more, under the influence.
 
“My whole life has revolved around records. I was buying Hip Hop and House in the Eighties as it was released and I got heavily into tracing the steps back through breaks and sample sources that were used in Hip Hop records. I also joined the dots between Disco & modern club & House music & spread my music explorations from Rare Groove to rare Disco. There were very few people interested in this vein of music history at the time & even fewer as obsessed as me. So when the re-emergence of Disco exploded I was well ahead of the curve, not only in collecting but historical knowledge. The best thing about record collecting is that it never ends and after 35 years of buying, after 25 years of selling & playing records there is still old stuff to discover & new releases to endeavour to keep up with.”
 
So as something of an expert in all things Disco, Nick gets quite a few offers to release compilations but as a record obsessive his natural hoarding mentality makes him cautious to give up the goods. As anyone who’s been aware of his record selling website www.djfriendy.co.uk over the last 10 years and his paper sales lists (now that’s old school) for more than 10 years preceding, he could easily put together a compilation of the rarest Disco & Boogie 12 inches, and there are, of course, some of those included here but he wanted to share more than that.

Let's kick it off with the version of french mastermind MARK LOWER. His signature nu disco sound captivates us every time and so it comes as no surprise that he also nailed this remix with adding a funky bass line to his remix and arranging it in a clubby and very danceable way. We're sure this one will do great out in clubs and festivals.
German deep house professor LEXER was on our list for a possible remix since quite a while. We're following his music carefully and so we're happy that we could get him on board to give it a try. His remix takes a more melancholic direction: He added some organ pads and organic textures to his remix as well as he re-arranged the vocals in a very special kind of way that gives the track a fresh and different musical suit.
Third remix comes from Canadian newcomer TEP NO. This young man is a big multi instrumentalist and vocal talent, as well as an ace producer; all in one person. His original songs got hundred thousands of plays on youtube and soundcloud. With his distinctive organic taste in creating music he can rely on a big fan base already and we're sure you're gonna hear a lot from this young guy in the near future.
Tep No did what he does best; he created an amazing, melodic re-interpretation. He added some catchy guitar licks, and filtered the vocals to give them a really nice and smooth taste.

Recorded live at the KCRW presents "An Evening with Gilles Peterson" live radio show at Sonos Studio on the evening of May 23rd, 2013.  It was hosted by Jason Bentley and featured special guest appearances by Om'Mas Keith and Shafiq Husayn of Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Egon, Seu Jorge, The Decoders and many others.  

During the Decoders set, Seu Jorge joined the band in an impromptu rendition of his previously recorded cover of Roy Ayers' classic hit "Everybody Loves The Sunshine"
