It’s been some time since Dj Fudge and Kiko Navarro first worked together on their Ideal EP which came out on Peppermint Jam. 

They missed each other so much that Kiko decided to fly to Barcelona where Fudge was living to get back into the studio together. 

They both had ideas using boogie and disco samples and couldn’t avoid working with them and having lot of fun. The ‘Boogie Thieves’ EP is the result of those long, late nights in the studio working like crazy.

‘The Secret Life Of Us’ features band members who regularly play live around the world headed by singers Pete Simpson and Donna Gardier. The nucleus of Tony Remy (guitar), Julian Crampton (bass) and Frank Tontoh (drums) are also joined by a selection of vocal stars from the soulful scene including Angela Johnson, Noelle Scaggs, Darien and Vivienne McKone. Combine this standard of musicianship with strong songs and Dave's sharp arrangements and you've got a potent brew both in the studio and on the live stage. Joey co-wrote most of the songs with Diane Charlemagne, who many will know from Goldie's ‘Inner City Life’. “Diane is super talented and writes with wit and intelligence”, says Joey. Diane also performs vocals on ‘My Way’, 'Definition of Love' and the album title track with Donna Gardier.

The Sunburst Band's lush "In The Thick Of It" has been a big club and radio hit throughout the summer, one that has even won praise from diehard fans of the Brenda Russell original. 

Now Sweden's Opolopo (hot from his Gregory Porter “1960 What” rework) gives the track an 80’s boogie/proto house rework. 

Squelchy stabs and funked up synth bass make this a sure fire winner for both the muso’s and dancefloors. 

Yes, there are quite a few boogie influenced house tracks but most of them are based around big samples, where as this contains none. 

If you prefer things a little less vocal then check the Boogie Body Land Dub, this grooves along without any house clichés.

The high voltage ‘Electricity’ kicks things off with the sensational voice of Anabel Englund leading the way. The deep, slow grooves ride effortlessly through the track with a breath-taking break down filled with electric bolts and melodic synth keys.

‘Goodnight Moon’ is the second on offer from Lee and Marc and boasts a heavy bass, beautiful synths patterns and infectious groove. The atmosphere in the track is filled with layers of intricate percussions and luscious melodies, while the interesting vocals make this really stand out from the rest.

Over on the B-side Lee takes the reins with ‘Could Be’, effortlessly swarming the mind with soaring synths, soft R n’B style vocals and lo-slung driving bass lines, while the trippy keys are destined to hypnotize you on the dancefloor.

Kyodai (also known as Bassfort and Wagon Cookin) have been making a name for themselves since their debut EP Rumba on Freerange which gained support from Masters At Work, Jimpster,Gilles Peterson and Rainer Truby.

Last year's "Breaking" (for Mad Mats’s Local Talk label) was a big favourite here at Z HQ.

Another standout track from the recent Sunburst Band album is the boogiefied house cut ‘Definition of Luv’ featuring Diane Charlemagne. 

Rising star Sean McCabe once again comes through with a brilliant remix adding his trademark deep and soulful house sound using Diane’s vocals to great effect. His Main mix is one for the soulful house heads while his Definition of Dub goes a bit deeper and dubby.

As always Joey Negro turns in his own extended album mix and Dubstrumental stretching out the original making the most of the 80's style synth parts.

This new track from Akabu features the soaring neo soul croons of Alex Mills (who you might recognize from Miguel Campbell's ‘Something Special’).

The Joey Negro Strip Mix is unashamedly feel-good with its bouncing, skewed and spraying synths and driving bassline, with pristine production putting many imitators to shame.

The Akabu Warehouse Mix is built on chunky drums and classic claps before rave indebted synths swoop into the mix. Building the tension slowly, the whole thing comes alive with a bobbling bassline and the carefully chopped and spliced diva vocals of Miss Mills.

Yet another timeless and easy to love offering from the studio of Dave Lee.

Following on from the likes of “Backstreet Brit Funk”, “Destination Boogie” “GoGo Get Down”, the well-received and growing Under The Influence series and the ever-popular Soul of Disco albums, Z Records continue to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, soul, funk and boogie. Now ZR returns with a long overdue Gospel album compiled by David Hill. 

A word from David Hill...

“Gospel music has often followed the prominent trends in secular music, probably in the hope of widening its audience by giving the subject matter a sprinkling of cool. In the 60s it happened with R&B and then funk-flavoured gospel, the 70s brought sweet-soul crossovers, and by 1975 the sounds of early disco had started to permeate the genre. This compilation brings together overlooked gospel gems that have their production rooted in disco and boogie, the sound of the early 80s that followed in disco’s wake. It’s only recently that this music has begun to be appreciated by fans outside of its original target market, and I’m glad to help it finally reach a wider audience.”

David began his music career in 1994 as a member of the Ballistic Brothers, together with Ashley Beedle and Rocky & Diesel of X-Press 2. In 1994 he co-founded the Nuphonic record label, where he managed the creative aspects on almost a hundred releases, with artists including Faze Action, Norman Jay, Andrew Weatherall, Maurice Fulton and David Mancuso. In addition to the record label, Nuphonic also produced the Sony award winning London Xpress radio show for Xfm, which led to various club nights. 

David has also acted as a music consultant to several record companies, one of these being Soul Jazz records, who he produced a series of successful albums for - in 2004 the ‘World of Arthur Russell’ and more then the acclaimed ‘Soul Gospel’ series. He was also production consultant for Auralux, the London based reggae reissue record label, where he worked with Lee Perry, King Jammys, Sly & Robbie and Linval Thompson.

He continues to work on personal projects such as Rootikal, the monthly roots reggae Night, and has a number of reissue and compilation projects currently in production. He is also currently overseeing the production of a book and an accompanying touring exhibition that will showcase Bill Bernstein's photographs of New York nightlife in the late ’70s.
