The Balearic Gabba Soundsystem is back, back with a new EP that features three more leftfield remixes from curious electronic specialist Enzo Elia that have all been licensed officially by Irma Records. The source material for his three unhinged reworks is a track by 90s Italian house duo Soft House Company and two from cult Italian DJ and producer Don Carlos.

Soft House Company released only two EPs, both in 1990, but made a big impact with them: pretty much everyone has heard ‘What You Need’ and that’s the track that gets remixed here. Elia turns it into a slightly more bouncy and disco leaning cut with raw silvery drums, huge vamping piano chords and those classic vocal cries and already Eddie C and Gerd Jansen have been playing it. At the breakdown there is the sound of waves breaking on a beach before pianos go wild: It’s a freewheeling and sure fire party starting track that still does the trick nearly quarter of a century after original release.

Don Carlos was behind such seminal club tracks as 1991’s ‘Alone’ and produced five studio albums in the nineties and naughties. He fuses Afro rhythms with deep house vibes and has DJed all over the world since the 70s. The first of his to get re-worked is ‘Overture’, which starts with tropical bird cries, whistles and loon calls. It’s the sound of a humid jungle that gets slowly consumed by lush pads, delicate piano melodies and stirring string sounds. With a truly magical atmosphere and uplifting joyousness permeating the whole thing, it cannot fail to make you feel on top of the world.

Finally, Elia tackles ‘Chicago’ (a track that’s already been supported by Soft Rocks) and does so with swathes of mesmeric effects. Organic hand congas, breathy vocal snippets and a bristling nebula of synths, pads and strings all dance around each other in reservedly euphoric symphony.

This might just be one of the most beautifully and bizarrely Balearic releases yet from the ever unhinged Balearic Gabba Soundsystem.

Forever Together was a monster club hit that spent 3 weeks inside the Top 75 but failed to crack the all-important 40. Dave Lee has reworked his much-loved catalogue classic from the bottom up, featuring all new keys & overhauled drums, plus a slamming slap bass line that nods heavily to the source material and injects a serious dose of funk to the proceedings. When you want something done right, sometimes it’s best to do it yourself and that’s exactly what Dave has done here.

With my remix of Ohiboki, I wanted to pay homage to the emotion of the original while bringing it into my own world. The beautiful  vocals inspired me to build deeper rhythms around them, layering textured synths to give the track a darker edge.

Providing a taste of what’s to come from the upcoming album Glitterbox – Love Is The Message, this sampler serves up the very best dancefloor-filling beats, balancing classic with contemporary across five glittering tracks. 

Up first is a sublime remix of Soul Rebels ‘I’ll Be Good’. Soul Rebels covered the Rene & Angela electro-funk classic back in 2005, and this brand new remix is the first of two EP exclusives from the current king of disco re-edits, Dr Packer. Already a familiar name on the Glitterbox Recordings imprint, Dr Packer specialises in creating glorious upbeat re-works of much-loved favourites. Next up is his brand new remix of King Unique’s anthem ‘Love Is What You Need (Look Ahead)’. Another instant classic, it employs a warm, relaxed beat to give that unforgettable vocal more of a disco vibe.

The third exclusive on the EP, Luke Solomon & Terry Grant’s ‘Disco Revision’ of the seminal ‘Wonky Bassline Disco Banger’ reimagines the charmingly bonkers track, smoothing over some of the wonkiest bits but maintaining the disco fever by amping up the shuddering strings. 

Holding down the “classic” end of proceedings is Kings Of Tomorrow with ‘Tear It Up’, featuring the heavenly voice of Julie McKnight. Glitterbox is all about those euphoric ‘hands-the-air’ moments, which this track has endlessly. Rounding off this outstanding EP with an irresistible groove, Mike Dunn’s re-work of Gershon Jackson’s ‘Love Desire’ is a certified dancefloor pleaser. One of the most instantly recognisable voices of the last 25 years, Kathy Brown's hits are up there in the house music hall of fame, 'Strings Of Life' with Soul Central and 'Turn Me Out' with Praxis being all-time classic tracks. Kathy has a long and prolific history with Defected, who first released 'You Give Good Love' in 2002. This jumping new mix from DnA Studios appears on the upcoming 'Glitterbox - Love Injection' album compiled by Simon Dunmore. Fulfilling Glitterbox's ethos for celebrating timeless musical moments, the compilation includes respectful nods to the golden-era voices like Kathy's, this disco standard being one of the clear highlights.
