Our 112th podcast comes from a DJ that holds the records for the longest ever residency in recent underground electronic music. Ralph Lawson, a Leeds based DJ, kicked off his career and played the very first record in the legendary British club “Back to Basics” where to this date, he withholds a residency. In his recent history, Ralph played and got accredited in some of the world’s most respected night clubs around the world, where he obtained esteemed residencies among clubs such as Space Ibiza, Barcelona’s Loft and Berlin’s Watergate club. Ralph caught the Acid bug back in 1988 as he shifted from London to England’s house mecca of Leeds, where he later started his infamous 2020 Vision record label in 1994.

Living near Birmingham, UK, most of my weekends were spent at places like Wobble, Fun, Marco Polos and Happy Happy Joy Joy, listening to these records.

“Kapela” is one of the world’s best dancers. Together with his world famous crew “Wanted Posse” (who participated in the first edition of The Notorious IBE All Battles All), he makes cross-overs between the hip hop dance genres. Kapela dropped an idea to the IBE organization to assemble a mix of versatile freestyle BBoys and some of the world’s best House dancers. Together with IBE founders Tyrone (DJ Mr Tee) and Mario (MC Mario Bee), Kapela created the idea for “Break Down the House”.
A concept where BBoys and House dancers come together in the cypher and dance without any limitations and just feel the music. Blending styles and getting inspired of each other’s dance moves is what it’s all about. After it’s succes of last year, Kapela and The Notorious IBE yet again invite some of their closest friends to this session but as always everybody is welcome to join the fun!

Since the early 90's, I'd say there are a handful of house music record labels that managed to define a sound and stay ahead of the crowd... and Junior Boys Own is definitely one of them. Formed by Terry Farley & Steve Hall in 1992, the West London label was part of the 'Boys Own Collective' back then, a group of friends who DJ'd, promoted, produced records and ran a fanzine. The collective included Terry Farley, Pete Heller, Andrew Weatherall, and Tom & Ed (The Chemical Brothers) amongst others. The label released dozens of house classics in the 90's from artists including Fire Island, The Black Science Orchestra, Roach Motel, X-Press 2, and Outrage - all of whom feature on this mix. In my humble opinion, JBO was and always will be a true house music hero.

As always, this was mixed live on two Technics 1210's and an Allen & Heath Xone 22 mixer. No cheating with technology.
