Piano Improvisations #24.8

A friend of mine has a severely autistic son who is now in his early 20's. He can't speak and has the mind of someone around three years old- but that is determined by the way we think.  Who knows how complex his thinking really is.  His name is Lorenzo. He loves to do puzzles and listen to music. 

One afternoon as I was laying the piano track for this music,  my son was talking to the mother on speaker phone and Lorenzo could hear me playing the piano.  He stopped doing his puzzle to listen.  That is how he connects. He loves music. When I heard that I knew I needed to finish this music for him. I haven't seen this friend for a very long time but she is coming to visit in a few weeks and I will be meeting Lorenzo for the first time. I wonder,  will he recognize the music?

During the first few months of last year, I was ill with my recurring kidney stone problems.

Fortunately, that passed.

I left some of the compositions I started unfinished, and some sketches were barely started.

This is one of them.

My mother lives in a typical Andalusian house in Seville.

One of the characteristics of these houses is that they usually have a courtyard where there are all kinds of flowering and non-flowering plants.

Obviously, they need to be cared for, watered, fertilized, etc.
My mother loves doing it, and in spring she reaps the rewards of her labor.

I always give my flower icons to the women I follow (I hope I'm not annoying them by doing that), so I thought it was interesting to draw inspiration from all of that to put this together.

La tendresse des coups ( DelhyA - Régis GAUBERT & JIM ) TRANSLATED

I think of some of the "old timers" that have influenced my life especially when I was a younger man, the stories they shared, the wisdom in those stories if I listened closely, and most sobering, that I'm an old timer myself now.  This song is a bit of a musical portrait of encountering an old timer at a small-town diner and enjoying a bit of food and conversation.  Joining me in this visit is ace pianist and valued collaborator Debra Buesking.  As always, her playing enriches and informs my playing and is totally sympathetic to the theme. On a personal note, I appreciate all of you that reached out to me upon hearing about the devastating flood in central Texas that swept away many lives and much property.  It was a worst case scenario happening on one of the busiest weekends of the year.  Amarillo stayed high and dry during the event, but all of us were touched, as was the whole world, upon hearing of the tragedy.  Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
