In case you’re wondering why the track is called what it is then I cannot tell a lie. it’s all Gordon’s fault.  I was having an email conversation with him about life, the universe and everything when, for no reason I could easily glean at the time, he said “I’ve got to go and walk to Asda in the fog". I wasn’t sure if he meant he could only walk to Asda if there was fog or that he just needed a walk in the fog and Asda was as welcoming a place to go as anywhere else or, more simply, that he had to get some groceries and Asda was the nearest and most convenient place to go in such inclement weather. Whatever the reason, my immediate thought was “What a great title for a song…”.

There’s certainly no shortage of songs about Covid-19 but I just couldn’t resist the temptation Gord had inadvertently sent my way to vent some of my Covid frustrations.  If you chance to read the lyrics and aren’t from the UK, I should explain that all of the words in capital letters are the names of UK supermarket chain stores.  You may also be wondering why I mentioned the Royal Yacht so, for those of you that hadn’t heard, our wonderful government, in the midst of the pandemic and the financial constraints it was placing on the country, announced that it was commissioning the building of a new one at a cost of somewhere around 200 million pounds.  Isn’t it good to know they have their fingers firmly on the pulse of public spending at times like these?

For some time now, Gal and myself have wanted to work on a track with both Gord and Arkestar and for many reasons, this particular song seemed to lend itself really well to the idea.  We’d therefore both like to thank them for lending their unrelentingly brilliant skills and commitment to the entire project and for making it such a complete pleasure to work on.  We certainly had more fun than we’d a right to. Thanks again for listening. (Terry Reeves)

This gem can be found in Buntings Ancient Music of Ireland, and the "literal  translation from the original Irish" was undertaken by a Miss Mary Balfour, (there is a slightly different  translation in my 1897 book The Minstrelsy of Ireland). 
The original Irish song was believed to have been collected by an agent of Bunting's associates the McCrackens - a man called Patrick Lynch...who collected over 200 songs from singers around the Mayo area in the early 1800's but this man was never acknowledged in the publication. 
The original tune was believed to have been first published as "Ye Trugh" by Neal in 1724, but Bunting got it from Charles Byrne at a harpist's gathering around the 1790's.

In my contemporary arrangement I've made the English lyrics flow a bit better.

Wrote this in 2006, but the original chorus was really odd, and in listening back to it I couldn't work out what on earth I was thinking, so this is an updated version.  The verses are pretty much as they were in 2006, though have adjusted the melody a little bit, and the chorus is entirely new, middle 8 added too, those parts written in 2022.

Acoustic instrumental, written and recorded in 1998. Not a perfect performance, but I love this song. As with a few of my other tunes, I woke up one night with this playing in my head, jumped out of bed and spent the rest of the night learning how to play it.
