OneAmbient4 - The Stillness Begins (Naviarhaiku 400)

It’s a sun brightened morning
the night chill’s finally warming
and the birds are all horning in
with their melodies
as if their bird brains 
are filled up with pure jealousy
because they can’t sing like me.

As I play my guitar and 
my voice is exploring
lyrics that fit to 
my latest outpouring

Then a chipmunk pops up
to see what’s going on
cause the world 
was so peaceful
since he woke up at dawn
and he squats and he listens 
for a moment or two
so I throw him a cheeto
and he squats and he chews
for what seems like long, hours
cause that cheetos so "BIG!"
then he dashes away
to perch high on a twig
sitting up in a cheap seats
far from my latest gig
"Go Fig!"

Then my song 
at last reaches
a point to record
as I head on inside
where my dreams 
are transformed
cause the birds won’t be 
giving me any awards
and all their chirping
and a chipmunk burping
will not enhance the sound
found in my soundproof Studio
where I can get it all down.

So I drop a few cheetos 
on my deck as a gift
for the birds and the chipmunk 
who gave my day a lift.

I do most of my writing when
I’m enjoying nature
it’s beauty and fresh air
help me much when I labor
to blend words with the notes
in a way that is pleasant
although it’s not made me rich
as I 'm still a poor peasant.
 
But I entertain birds and 
I make chipmunks happy
until something big occurs
and I win my first grammy
then I’ll raise up a monument 
near my deck where it’s grassy
perhaps a marble bird bath
for the birds, nothing flashy 
with a cheeto dispenser
at the bottom to please
My furry, little friend 
who comes to visit me.

And a plaque at 
he base that 
gives thanks to 
the creatures
who were there 
when I’d written
my chart topping feature...
though I don’t expect 
this will be my latest hit
though It’s cute and it’s funny 
and it holds some great wit….

But my soul doesn’t care 
I just like sitting there
making music from nothing
in my plastic lawn chair
with all my work for the birds
and a cute chipmunk's stare. 

Whether it's just for birds
or for chipmunks you see
I was born to play guitar
and make melodies

I'm not really bothered
by the bird's jealousy
as I'm munching on Cheeto's
and trying to be
a Rock Star someday
going down in history
and sipping my coffee
on a sun brightened morning
and the birds are all horning 
in with their melodies
as if their bird brains

This work for cello is derived from ideas associated with change ringing.

If one has, say, 6 bells, and one wishes to ring them in some sequence, then one has 720 possible sequences ("rows") to choose from.    Performing all the possible "rows" in some sequence constitutes an "extent" or "full peal."  A traditional desire consists of have every two consecutive "rows"  (or "change") in an "extent" differ only by swapping order of two consecutive bells.   So give any particular starting "row" of 6 bells, only 5 "rows" can legally complete the "change." 

That "extents," legal in this sense, even exist follows from non-trivial mathematical constructions, but these constructed extents tend to have a very mechanical character (and advantage for "method ringers").  

I (re?)discovered that one can make new extents from old by exchanging two consecutive segments AND time-reversing just one of them.  Call this a "twist."  "Twisting" one of the mechanical extents 2000 times (for an extent of 720 "rows") seems to produce reasonably random or organic "extents."   Philosophically these "twisted extents" lead double lives, being both highly structured and constrained, but given that, also as capricious as possible.

Four random "extents" govern this work.  Most simply, one "extent" controls the 6 dynamic levels in each row statement, one "extent" controls the 6 durations, and one "extent" controls the sequence within whatever the current collection of pitches.  

The final "extent" gets used go generate the pitch content.  Instead of ordering events, the permutations get used to order  the intervals 2/1, 3/2, 4/3,  5/4, 6/5 and 7/6, thus building up a scale (or perhaps a chord, depending on how you care to think about it).  So unlike actual bells that each carry a fixed pitch and collectively establish a fixed key, here each "row" of the 720 has its own "key."  Thus the music constantly modulates, and since each "change" modestly changes just one note in the scale (because consecutive intervals swap), the music manifests an emergent sort of voice leading, albeit a very distant relative from the voice leading of common practice music.
