Scenario: The Grand Ballo. All dance in a bacchanalian manner at the height of the revels, Gradually frenetic movement (whirlingly on). The Black clock strikes midnight (2:25). The Red Death surreptitiously appears far up stage. Silence then: soft laughter, rumors, from the company a buzz, murmur, expressing disapprobation and surprise. A singer in a fox mask ceremoniously enters and delivers an aria while the revelers sway and dance in background support. During the song, Prospero notices The Red Death. Some nobles begin to falter, others begin to convulse. As the aria increases in tempo, the Red Death and Prospero dance a gradually accelerating chasse through all the colored rooms: blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, black ending in the black room with red windows. Confrontation as Prospero orders Death seized. Prospero produces a dagger. Four revelers grab Death’s robes. The raiments are ripped from Death; nothing but a hazy red dust cloud remains. Revelers begin to convulse and fall. Music changes to the breathing of Scene 1. Prospero slowly staggers and collapses downstage. The stage is left with only bodies—one or two still slowly writhing—as the music ends—hazy redness.
