"Echo" was written in the summer of 2013 as a new song I wanted to debut in one of my first shows at "Toad's Place" in New Haven, CT that same summer. I wrote this song in about a month and it is one of the best songs I've ever played live from my catalogue. 

At this point, I had been producing for three years, and had gotten absolutely nowhere. I wasn't signed anywhere (to be fair, I didn't try), I wasn't performing, I just produced for myself. I had gotten the attention of a few producers and DJs here in CT, but the gatekeeping turned me off from interacting with them. But eventually, I found myself booked for Toad's Place, one of CT's most famous venues. At this point I had maybe 40 songs; I had released an album, a compilation album, and two EPs. 

The album was a badly produced mess, the compilation album just as bad but with songs that had not yet been released. The EPs were much better in terms of production and songwriting but still very amateurish sounding. You could tell I was trying to imitate my favorite Dutch House artists like Afrojack and Sydney Samson, so it all felt very derivative. 

By 2013, I was very serious about making a career out of music production. So I focused more on my craft, learned the softwares like the back of my hand, honed in on key composition and arrangement concepts, and learned the basics of songwriting. As I did that, I defined my sound and identified sounds I used in a lot of my songs that made them sound uniquely like a DC Medina song. 

"Echo" is one of those first productions where I felt truly comfortable creating the entire thing. While I didn't know I was only scratching the surface, I felt like everything had fallen into place and I could explore and experiment with the music I was making because I felt I understood it at a fundamental level. 

Around this time, I was beginning to think of my songs as vehicle for stories. "Echo" is such one of those songs and it tells the story of a revolution. The uplifting power chords are meant to evoke a sense of devotion to something greater contrasted with the melodies and rhythms of the drop which suggest rebelling against such feelings.

I believe this is also one of my first songs written in a minor key. I usually wrote them in major keys because I wanted to instill a sense of grandiosity, happiness, and control on my songs. Writing in C minor allowed me to explore moods I wasn't used to. This resulted in a song that can be digestible by those used to listening to EDM or pop music, but offers complexity both sonically and in its composition and construction. 

I was so happy with the way this song came out that I realized that I needed to stop trying to imitate what the other artists were doing and focus on what I was creating. This was a truly liberating production that gave me a lot of confidence and privately remains one of my favorite songs.
