"I Don't Speak" is a song I wrote sometime in late 2013 or early 2014, and it went through several revisions before I landed on this version. 

At this point, I was fully influenced by trance but not quite willing to give up progressive house and electro. I was comfortable with them, I knew how to write for them, I knew how to design for them, mix, etc. I was afraid to give trance a shot because I wondered where I'd be if I sucked at producing it. 

So, a lot of my songs from that time, this one included, have that ambivalence produced into them. They don't sound like progressive house, nor do they sound like trance. There's some electro but not enough to categorize it within it. I was in no man's land, but that's where many of my favorite songs come from, and "I Don't Speak" is one of them. 

I was trying everything here. I broke away from the 4/4 kick patterns and introduced some hip-hop or dubstep patterns at different points in the song. I used a lot of wobbles in the second half of the song, inspired by dubstep and complextro. The chords that build up the backing sounds are sort of based in trance, but too close to house to be considered trance, and the leads are melodic but too repetitive and too closely related in sound so it's hard to differentiate between the two.

That's the one thing I regret with this song. I really think I has something going for it that makes it catchy, and entertaining but I try a little too much. I personally enjoy listening to it because I know what I was going for, but I think others might feel a little overwhelmed by all that's going on sonically, and a little overwhelmed by the simplicity underlying it all. Still, this song was an important step into what would become my sound years later.
