"Insomnia" was written between 2014-2015 during the time I was "producing" trance.

By 2014, I had become entrenched in the trance scene. I was consuming everything from tech and hard trance to uplifting and psy-trance. I loved all of it. The sweeping chords and snare rolls, the haunting melodies, the repetitive distorted leads on the drops, the juicy, gross basslines that encapsulates you, the shared feelings between you and the people who are listening. 

I loved the trance experience, so I continued pursuing my sound through that avenue. 

Although not my second trance song, since I technically produced three trance songs in my second album "Fractured Reality," (Razor Shaped, 1984 and Dunn), it was the second one I produced that I felt I understood trance, so I consider it my second trance song after "Phantasia." 

"Insomnia" is a classic trance track, there are no surprises. I wrote it during one of my manic episodes, hence the title. I try to convey a manic episode in the song, hence the soft, calming verse, but the build and drop are intense. I think I do a good job of conveying the emotions of a manic person and the hope that things will get better at some point. 

I was a little afraid after producing this song because I poured a lot of time into it, but it all came very easily to me. Once I thought I knew how to write a trance song, all I needed was to translate my ideas to paper and it was very easy for me to do that with this song. That was terrifying after years of doubting myself and my ability.

I love producing in 138-140, this song is in 138 BPM. There's something about the higher speeds that just gives me more control over the feel of time. I think that when you produce in 128 BPM, it becomes monotone after a while and the sense of movement is diminished. But when you go to 138-140 BPM, that monotony is gone, and I feel like I regain control over time again. 

This song is written in G minor and this is a deliberate choice. Naturally, the key and the chord progressions sound depressive to me, filled with melancholy and sadness--exactly what I wanted to convey. There's a bunch of articles written about this, but as I would later learn, G minor is known in Western music for specifically evoking these feelings in listeners. So when I found out about this, I felt validated in my choice. 

The melody was hard to write because I'm not a piano player, and at the time I didn't have any midi instruments so I had to painstakingly input each note manually until I achieved what I wanted. It was frustrating because I knew exactly what I wanted but it took a lot of trial and error to get it to sound like I wanted. I'm really happy with what resulted, but I'm sure that if I had the instruments, it would've been easier and would've allowed me to experiment more. 

Still, I love "Insomnia." It is by far one of the purest trance songs I've ever made in terms of structure but also in terms of sound. If this song was mastered correctly, it wouldn't sound odd in an Above and Beyond set or old Armin van Buuren set.
