"Lonely Roads" was produced sometime in 2018-2019. 

At this point in my music career, I had already spent eight to nine years kinda figuring out myself and my sound. I had come such a long way from when I first started, and I felt like I had a sound unique to DC Medina. 

I had given up on genres and trying to fit a prescribed idea of music. When I was looking to do music production seriously, I didn't have enough experience to stand out from a world of similarly positioned producers. This discouraged me a lot and eventually I decided not to pursue it as a career anymore. 

When I made this decision, producing became fun again. I didn't have any expectations from anyone; no specific sound to achieve, no specific fidelity to attain. And that's where "Lonely Roads" was born. Out of a liberating understanding that the music I produce is for me.

This goes back to when I started learning the trumpet in 2004. I never cared to play good to impress my instructor or my peers; I wanted to entertain myself. I wanted to see how far I could push my skills, what was something new I could bring to playing, and have fun. When I pursued music seriously, the fun was taken away. Things became formulaic, monotone, and boring. I couldn't produce anything because I was sterilizing myself to sound like established artists in the hopes I'd be noticed by a small or big label where I could then exert my skills in music production and songwriting. But when I gave that up, new avenues opened up to me. 

One of the first songs I produced after giving up on getting signed was "Lonely Roads." It's some sort of trance and electro house infused song, inspired by the likes of Andrew Beyer and Ilan Bluestone. The melody triplets combined by the bass in the drop is my favorite. The kick is mixed perfectly, and the musical elements are all sidechained nicely so they give each other room to breath. It sounds so tight. 

The first drop is very much influenced by what was popular at that time in trance which was to have an intense, almost unrelated drop to open your songs. Everyone was doing it, so I did it. The actual song itself is very evocative. The sweeping pads fill the ambiance to set a melancholic mood, and the melody is a sad call for resolution. The bass in the drop are quadruplets that resolve the chord progression. It all sounds unified and very cohesive.

My favorite thing about this song is that I composed it in A minor, which carries a somber and melancholic sound with it. Like some of my other songs, these deliberate choices shape the meaning and storytelling I'm trying to do in my music. I don't quite remember the story I had developed for this song, but the title gives some insight into what I was going for. I am trying to convey sadness, but in a powerful way. This song expertly accomplishes that. My second favorite thing about this song is that it is in 128 BPM, however, the style and composition of the song gives the impression that the BPM is above 136. 

I don't know where the file for this song is. I don't know if it's in my EHDD or elsewhere, but I can't work on this song right now because I'm not sure if it exists anymore. I would love to finish this song and release officially. At some point, if I don't have the file, I may recreate this song but I feel like it won't be the same. We'll see.
