Slithering Truth

The sophomore release from Ali Wells’ new specialty imprint Submit, Feral Grind (SUBMIT002) collects tracks from a wide swath of producers who operate at the intersection of techno, drone and DIY electronics. Curated by Wells and music journalist Justin Farrar, the compilation features a balanced assortment of well-established innovators and under-the-radar sound explorers.

The names Pete Swanson, Prostitutes, Burial Hex, Profligate, Bleaching Agent, Hive Mind and Indignant Senility will certainly be familiar to those who keep abreast of the latest developments in cutting-edge electronic music. Over the last several years, these musicians have exerted considerable impact on everything from “technoise” to 21st-century industrial. In the process, they’ve released music on labels as diverse as Spectrum Spools, Type, Diagonal, Not Not Fun, Digitalis, Opal Tapes and Wells’ own Perc Trax.

Feral Grind also spotlights numerous artists not widely known outside of underground-noise circles. Their inclusion is proof of just how extensive and far-reaching the interface between techno and noise has become in recent years: Housefire, from North Carolina, unleashes a multi-layered din of crunchy distortion and shattered groove exploration. Going by the all too appropriate moniker Trogpite, Nick Painter vomits-up cough syrup-drenched horror lurch and caveman groans reminiscent of Dread-era Wolf Eyes. Speaking of which, Wolf Eyes’ very own John Olson specializes in harsh-beat deconstruction under his alias Henry & Hazel Slaughter. Equally blown-out is the relentlessly pulsating work of Philadelphia’s Mincemeat or Tenspeed. Then there’s The David Russell Snake, whose whiplash-inducing productions are a direct reflection of the Cleveland musician’s deep roots in harsh noise and power electronics.

Times of chaos rings the bells for newest sea-bottom R&B sound lurch from radical sonic artists WOLF EYES. The U$A’s longest-running homemade primitive electronic poetry & vibes trio launches another scotched taped nuclear audio radioactive front on humanity.

This is the title track of the new WOLF EYES studio album which will be release March 24 2017.

It’s been a few short months since Badge Époque Ensemble released their self titled debut, an ambiguous collection of woozy, narcotized funk. And yet already we have Nature, Man & Woman - a simmering new platter containing 3 songs, producing 26 minutes of dank flute-oriented atmosphere. 

The disco-sleeved 12” EP provides a revealing glimpse of a musically omnivorous approach. On Badge Theme we find the group upping the ante of the sound of their debut, unspooling 14 minutes of sensual Ike Hayes indebted oomph, sure to thrill future generations of loop diggers (cut live off the floor no less!). 


The A side contains 2 songs, which seem to hint at diverging future directions this eclectic combo might take moving forward. Opener “Zealous Child” comes as something of a sequel to the debut LP’s sole vocal featuring track “Undressed In Solitude”. This go round BÉE have teamed up with Toronto singer Dorothea Paas to ruminate on notions of spiritual wisdom overtop a progressive and climactically bombastic homebrew. Title track “Nature, Man & Woman” closes out the side with 6 ominous minutes of mysterious provenance. Somewhere between a live performance and a collaged tapestry, the group make more explicit than ever before their affinity for beat-centric loop music. Sounding like Lonnie Liston Smith gone trip-hop for a broadcast prohibited episode of Law & Order, BÉE posit themselves here as amongst the moodiest of contemporary instrumental collectives. Little wonder that library music enthusiasts around the world have made emphatic note of the Ensemble.

Badge Époque Ensemble - Badge Theme

From the second album by SHIMMER, one of the most exciting bands playing in Brooklyn right now, and something of a super-group. With 2 members of Palberta, Simon Hanes of Tredici Bacci and ex- of Guerilla Toss, and Paco Cathcart aka The Cradle, one might expect SHIMMER's sound to be a bit of a hodge podge, but the opposite is actually true. SHIMMER has a laser-focused sound and vision, frantic and noisy, but equally precise and complex.

Transdisciplinary NYC artist Gavilán Rayna Russom beautifully comes into her own with a distinguished solo debut album statement including the voice of Cosey Fanni Tutti and brass arrangements by downtown legend Peter Zummo

After decades exploring her sonic personality in various projects inspired by her deep immersion in NYC’s club and avant-garde scenes, Rayna uses ‘The Envoy’ as a vessel to firm up and convey her personal conclusions on intersections of gender and electronic music. Enriched with complex human experience and key influence from sci-fi writer Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel ’The Left Hand of Darkness’ - a book that strongly resonated with her due to its descriptions of an alien race with multiple sexual characteristics - the album is intended to realign misconceptions of Russom’s prescient early work such as 2005’s ‘The Days of Mars’ LP for DFA, which arguably foreshadowed a rise of beat-less and more ambiguous urges that are now commonplace in contemporary dance music, yet were at the time lumped in with retro-fetishist trends. With ‘The Envoy’ Russom returns to a 2019 music scene that’s better prepared with the politics of an emerging new world, and thus readied for her ideas to take hold in the public consciousness.

Entwining Russom’s perspectives on gender, the occult, and spirituality, and how they relate to the body and music’s healing properties, ‘The Envoy’ clearly yet ambiguously expresses the artist’s concerns in nine interrelated parts. Practically devoid of percussion, but full of body-moving polyrhythmic pattern, the pieces spill out of the lines of any typically imposed “grid”. Within this loose context, porous to the chaos of noise, Russom smudges a blend of analogue and digital synths to connote an elusive sense of self, encouraging the listener to navigate the music’s curves and silhouettes by instinct. 

Employing the fluid potential of electronic music at its most fundamental in a way that loops right back to the glyding suspense of her prized early work, even literally incorporating elements of long form solo recordings made in the late ‘90s in the wake of Russom’s psych/noise band Soma.

Unanchored by kicks, yet pulsing in its own ways, the album flows with an underlying elegance from Cosey Fanni Tutti’s spellbinding recital of Russom’s text in ‘Kemmer’, set to an organic, orgiastic writhe of arps and stressed noise, and on thru the free-floating organ scape of ‘Envoy’, to acknowledge more grimly industrial impulses with ‘Strength out of the Dark’ and also a towering highlight of the album in ‘Discipline of Presence’, where Russom’s throbbing mass is hauntingly illuminated by plangent brass arrangement from Peter Zummo (key Arthur Russell collaborator). The 10 minute ‘Winter’ then wraps it all up under a titular reference to Ursula K Le Guin’s novel, placing Russom as a filament of solo piano-playing light within the cold expanse of NYC.
