In the hallway Amanda gazed at her perfectly shaped feet, smooth and symmetrical save for her left pinky toe which bent in rebellion, her light blue nail polish chipped and fading, it was her birthday, light shone in two crossing angles from the kitchen and the living room doorways, it didn't do anything for the grey sorrow of the peeling wallpaper or tired oak floor, it made her see that forgotten floating dust going nowhere, her mother was frosting her cake and her little brother whined to lick the bowl, at the end of the hallway she could see the edge of her father's dark brown pant leg, a peek of his tan sock, the rustling of his newspaper was predictable, her black cat padded down the hall with his dejected limp and rubbed against her leg, she pressed herself against the wall and slid down until she sat, her knees bent upwards towards he chest, her arms hanging on her legs, eleven, today she would be eleven and she had the thought that it didn't change anything, she closed her eyes, her brother chattered about thomas the tank engine, the jabbering faded to the back of her mind somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, today was her birthday but the funeral was yesterday, was yesterday.
