There’s very little information out there on èvia, which is part of their allure. What is known about them is that they’re based in New Zealand, they quietly release music via their Bandcamp subscription service and over the last few months they’ve caught the attention of some of the most respected names in ambient music, from Space Afrika to Special Guest DJ. 

It’s not surprising. The elusive producer may be from New Zealand but their music isn’t conceptually attached to any specific place. Like the videos they post on their YouTube channel, their songs are shrouded in a hazy fog of ambient electronics and amorphous, organic textures, similar in spirit to the nebulous sounds of artists on labels like Motion Ward, Experiences Ltd and sferic.

If you’re unfamiliar with èvia, this mix is a pretty perfect introduction to their world. The tracks suggest “the haziness of a distant memory” and evoke the same dreamlike quality as their music and videos. The recording moves through a heady blend of aquatic burblings, glistening textures and synth blips from the likes of perila, YABUJIN and Pontiac Streator. It also includes two particularly great forthcoming tracks by TIBSLC and èvia themselves.

q. pls introduce yourself

> My name is Gary Hunter. I run a small music website called Low End Theorists and the Theory Therapy mix series, plus co-host a couple of radio shows with Daniel Patrin.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

> I recorded it after a long walk in Sydney. It’s the middle of winter just now but we tend to get really clear crisp days. I moved here about 4 years ago from Scotland and I’ll never take for granted how nice it is to wake up to sun most days. I wanted the mix to provide a snapshot of that feeling. Really calming, almost quasi-religious tracks.

q. what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

> Maybe in one of those floatation tanks. Or as you fall asleep.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

> My TV or my old, but still great CDJ-350s.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

> We’re turning Theory Therapy into a label. We’ll be announcing our first release in the next week or so.

2009-2019 : Space mixes # 1 to 9. In 2009, I started mixing live ambient sets at my radio show, each saturday afternoon in Québec city. I don't think more than 6 people were listening (including my GF at that time) but later on, in 2011, I published the first one on Soundcloud : Space III. Now after 30 000 plays of them, I decided to make a best of mixing the best of them. The result is a spaced-out mix that might seriously soothe your mind & body. As you know I’ve been trying to add different flavours to each weeks JOOF Sessions gatherings, this week we’re going to do something different and play an ambient set. For those who have experienced my open to close sets you’ll already know I open the evening with some ambient vibes, this not only creates anticipation for the night ahead but is also the roots of the DJ you know John 00 Fleming. Ambient music is the roots of how it all started for me and what got me fascinated with electronic music in the 80’s and still today influences the JOOF sound. 
These are tracks that I regularly play at home, full rich sounds, dreamy and hypnotic, they are very powerful and stimulate new parts of your mind. We’re all going through difficult times at the moment, though we’re getting stronger each week, we still have those bolt of lightening reality checks of the world situation. I want this session to put you in a different mindset to take you away from everything, to give us hope, happiness and appreciate everything around us. Music is a very powerful healing tool and something I turn to all the time. I’m going to leave the camera pointed down because being honest with you, many of these tracks bring me to tears, but in a good way. Many people are holding mass pressure on their shoulders at the moment and not released tears yet, I hope this offers a release for you, you’ll feel better after. 
 Keep this set for years to come, and it will make you smile. I’ll also make a Spotify playlist of this too after and keep adding to it.
