Today we have a special session by the experienced Italian artist Filippo Scorcucchi, part of the LF58 duo with Neel, he sent us a hybrid mix where he is playing with turntables and his well-known modular synth. An abstract experience immersed in the ambient and experimental sound for the next 50 minutes, it has no waste!

It’s a true pleasure to welcome @sub-accent to our podcast series. The Accents Records label boss, and exquisite producer, has created a platform for experimentation and deep listening in the past couple of years, and we hope he won’t ever stop. Johan Bonnefoy, his real name, works mainly with hardware and a modular system, oscillating between ambient, industrial, techno and electronic experiments. With appearances on One Instrument, KVLTÖ Records, Cellar Door and many other impressive labels, he has created a remarkable discography throughout the years. 

Johan’s mix is one that keeps you on the edge of your seat, starting with drone-like soundscapes and guiding us through worlds of downtempo and experimentation. We had this mix on repeat the past couple of days, and we’re proud to release it. Thank you so much Johan!

Milan-based Lamusa II is an Italian musician, producer and DJ who represents expertise in meticulously crafted moody, leftifield electronics, often packaged in an adventurous melting pot of styles. His fluidity as a producer is well exhibited on his recently released album DON’T on Jay Glass Dubs’ label Extended Techniques, where various musical collaborations come together in a trip-hop infused work dripped in poetry and sensuality. After a few months break, now feels like the perfect time to release the next Deep Mind Music mix. The next entry comes from London-based DJ Gyorgy Ono, who has put together a winding, rich and pensive 2 hour journey, which takes us through strange landscapes, aural curiosities, blissful reveries and back again. 

In January Gyorgy shared Aphex Twin’s Stone In Focus on Facebook, and we started talking about the power of this track, and ambient music in general, to connect you with a feeling of deep nostalgia for a state of being long forgotten, that familiarity which creates a universal connection between listeners. I asked him to contribute a Deep Mind Music mix following this conversation, as this philosophy underpins much of my exploration with ambient and drone music, I’m fascinated with its ability to voice an expression of feelings which transcend our known experience of reality. 

I feel Gyorgy’s mix has captured the mood shifts we’re all feeling at the moment on a daily basis whilst isolating from the world in lockdown. Voicing the instability, the twinges of collective grief, and surreal calm we are all oscillating between in the ups and downs of home life. 

The mix is in two parts, the first half sets the scene, exploring different pockets of sound and feelings, sketching out spaces and landscapes. In the second half the sonics gloriously unspool and slowly smear, swirling in a thick haze around us as Gyorgy brings in spiralling piano arpeggios, zithers suspended in mid-air, and misty strums of guitar. 

This mix has such a cohesion in form and richness in detail that it summons a vision of a fully formed sonic world, somewhere distinctly other and yet strangely familiar. I know I’ll be getting lost in this mix for many months to come. In every sense of the phrase, a deep mind trip.
