‘Frames of Reference’ is the some 12 years in the making debut album from UK based techno producer Ø [Phase].

Best known by his work on the Belgium based Token Records his style ranges from gritty minimal techno to Detroit influenced material. His debut ‘Module Overload’ was released on London’s Lost/Cosmic records in 2000 and was followed by a string of productions for London's Surface/Inceptive Records and Ben Sims Ingoma imprint.

The move to Token came in 2007, he shortly after began DJing professionally and has since performed at parties across the globe whilst becoming a regular guest at Berlin’s techno Mecca, Berghain performing alongside esteemed peers and supporters such as Marcel Dettmann, Len Faki and Ben Klock. His continued works have seen constant support throughout the techno world and have featured in CD mixes by Robert Hood, Dave Clarke, François Kevorkian and Fumiya Tanaka amongst others. Alongside his production work Ø [Phase] is also a mastering engineer and on/off artwork designer. Starting out at London’s prestigious Sony Music/Whitfield Street Studios, he has cut records for numerous underground dance acts as well as working on projects for mainstream artists.

Now after a string of acclaimed releases on Token and a selection of remixes for the likes of Robert Hood, Mark Broom and Peter Van Hoesen comes Ø [Phase]’s debut long-player ‘Frames of Reference’. Opening with the brooding and building swirl of ‘Binary Opposition (Process 3)’ Ø [Phase] sets out his template of evolving, richly textured atmospheres underpinned by shards of dark and light. ‘The Bwiti Initiate’ revolves around a bouncing techno rhythm that could most certainly traverse the house/techno divide whilst ‘Distracted’ and ‘Misaligned’ are the kind of unadulterated, pummeling, cavernous techno tracks that have made Lost such a party institution.
Then we have tracks like the soft beating ‘Just Another Dance’ providing a lighter edge, embellished with warmth and strings and the thick, densely woven tapestry of ‘Shadow Caster’ which goes from experimental to dancefloor and back again with consummate ease. The off-kilter lilt of ‘Perplexed’ drags us further into the dark before keys and a hint of a melody draw us back upwards for air whilst the fat driving bass of ‘Dirtro II’ and funkier edged menace of ‘On The Edge’ show a virtuoso producer at the top of his game. The closing introspection of ‘Self Deceit’ wallows in subtle nuances before a mid section synth and string intervention pulls us back from the brink before finally descending into the void.

Late in 2013, French DJ and producer extraordinaire, Laurent Garnier, decided on a plan to get his music reaching out to the very corners of the underground music scene. Rather than self-releasing, or opting for the tried and tested labels, Garnier decided to plump for a selection of independent record labels from different countries that he greatly respected and supported, each one with their own strong identity and fan base, and to go under the moniker ‘Garnier’ for these projects. Opening his account on Chicago’s Still Music in February 2014, with the ‘AF0490’ single, the electronic stalwart has since gone on to issue singles on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons (‘AF4302’ EP), Musique Large (‘A13’) and the MCDE label (‘KL2036’ EP).

A huge supporter of Hypercolour over the years, and perhaps an embracing of the British label’s dedication to the ‘UK sound’ (considering the Frenchman’s early deployment to Manchester’s legendary Hacienda club in the late 80s as resident DJ), it’s of little surprise then that the fifth Garnier project lands on Hypercolour this August.

Two stellar tracks then from Garnier; ‘ENCHANTé’ is an epic 122BPM chugger, its soaring and pitch bending strings, rasping keys and filtered vocals providing plenty of melancholic melody and classic electronic vibes, whilst a swinging drum pattern keeps things nice and tight. A big tune from Garnier here, sitting very snuggly with his legendary track, ‘The Man with the Red Face’, we’re expecting this one to ring out across dancefloors far and wide over the coming months….

On the flip, ‘pǝsnɟuoɔ’ goes straight for the jugular; a pumping techno workout with scattering and inter-galactic bleep-work, thunderous effects, and with a heady nod to the sounds of Detroit’s minimalists Robert Hood and Jeff Mills. Battering 909 snares are offset with the warm and harmonic choir pads, a killer slice of techno from one of the scene’s most switched on and in tune godfathers!

This remix almost got lost into the sands of time after Stranjjur label went suddenly out of business. Luckily for us all, we managed to get it out into the open thanks to Ben Gomori. A mix of New York vibes and basslines with a certain acid-like ring to them, Ben's remix of the track is a great addition to the other remixes of this song.

A feeling from nineties hedonistic, horny French dance music is definitely on, complete with multiple vocals from the goddessess of joy, engaged in a dialogue with each other about what they’re gonna do after sunset. The bass has massive feel-good-feel-cool potential while the strings and keys are making the whole thing lightly deeper and briefly romantic. An exhilarating triumph of emotional confusion, miraculously enclosed in one single club hit.

« Paris is Burning » opens up with a sample from the eponymous classic documentary movie about NYC vogue scene in the late eighties. The track itself is all feverish pumping beats and in-your-face bass, infused with a vintage NYC Tenaglia/Vasquez dark, tribal feeling. Get ready Ibiza. Get ready Miami. Get ready, World.

« Wipe Out » is the summer riddim, a juvenile Riviera cousin of « Marble Anthem » or « Girly ». Glittering vocal bits and bittersweet organ chords switch to big deafening bass, hi-res dominatrix synths and punishing electrofunk beats. Just let yourself whip by the heat.

« Minute of Love » is just what it says except it’s actually three minutes and a half. It’s a midtempo house ballad featuring gliding keyboard washes, clavinova stabs and melancholy whistles, reactivating a long-lost summer rammed with hazy sex sensations and life-changing reflective lights. A soundtrack for the end of love – or for its very beginning.

Club Cheval’s Canblaster reworks Sound Pellegrino’s first love song, released last summer—by the young Surkin and his hero Todd Edwards who since this sung “Fragments Of Time” on the last Daft Punk album—with the addition of his signature ingredient: an inimitable sense of harmony and unveiling an entire first verse that didn’t make the original cut.

As it celebrates its fourth anniversary, the label founded by Teki Latex & Orgasmic takes us on a tour of Europe’s up and coming talents in the form of a collective album of 13 new tracks by the label’s core artists, France’s finest and a cast drawing from 14 cities in 9 countries. A gamble on the new faces of electronic music whose talents should permeate into the pop music of years to come.

SND.PE vol. 01 (pronounce “Sound Pé volume one”) is Sound Pellegrino’s first full-length effort. The label was founded in 2009 by Teki Latex and Orgasmic as a digital platform to share the pair’s club crushes in no time. These two founding members of seminal alt-rap group TTC have known each other for about 20 years and have released countless collaborations. Going through various musical phases, they have always kept a will to explore forward-thinking dance music that will make the crowd go crazy without sounding stale and outdated.

Born in 1980 and raised in the Detroit area, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement. 

His background in mathematics and engineering has given him a scientific approach to the dance floor, using frequencies, tones, and soundscapes to transform surroundings and mood. 
In 2003 he recorded his first promotional mix CD release for UR/Submerge. Since then, his faith based music production has landed him a seat with FXHE and Planet-e in Detroit. 

His debut album was released in early May 2009 by Denmark based label Echocord. 
In 2010 he began his own interpretation of Detroit techno with his new Detroit project and record label - DeepLabs. 

His sophomore album “Keep On” was released on FXHE records in 2012 and received a Recommended 4.5/5 rating on Resident Advisor. 

Hess is regarded as a perfectionist in his live sets and behind the decks layering his tracks in a very detailed and hypnotic manner. 
He has played at notable venues and events such as Tresor (Berlin), Culture Box (Copenhagen), Berghain (Berlin), Unit (Tokyo), Detroit Electronic Music Festival (Detroit), Fabric (London), The End Up (San Francisco), Golden Pudel (Hamburg), Sirup (Zagreb), Weekend Club (Berlin), Cubic Club (Madrid), Space (Ibiza), The Bunker (NYC) and many other venues all over the world. 

Luke’s continued hard work in the studio and in his performances combined with his unyielding interest in technology and sound will no doubt stimulate the boundaries of electronic music.
