Spring of 2021 sees the release of Catalyst by Default Position’s label founder Joseph S. Joyce, with remixes from Terry Francis and
Paul 90.

With pulsating 808 kicks, dark cavernous percussion lines, and tight vocal snippets, Catalyst can be best described as a stripped-back minimalist cut with elements of dub and main room techno inclinations.

Long-standing Fabric resident Terry Francis makes his second appearance on Default Position following his vinyl release Gasworks in 2016. In a remix that gradually builds towards a crescendo of quirky dub chords and low slung pads, Francis injects Catalyst with a cheeky baseline, a dose of driving percussions, and a smattering of tripped out pitch delays.

Paul 90 is one of the founding members of Default Position, having remixed Joseph S Joyce’s ‘The Vision’ in 2013 under his alias Chapman. Fast forward to 2021 and Paul once again brings his love of the 90’s underground to his remix, with a trademark UK Garage-inspired shuffle and a driving 909 kick that sits in contrast against the dubby elements of the original track. The end result is a delicious groovy house track that reminds us of those warm summer evenings out in London town.

Default Position welcomes Ukrainian-born DJ producer Andrey Sirotkin to the label - with his debut deep techno EP, 'Dusk'. 

As a seasoned music maker Sirotkin brings a wealth of experience, having produced several genres - from deep house and dub techno to drum and bass and dubstep under his alias I Wannabe.  

Sirotkin's latest four-track EP transports the listener into a spooky dark underworld, with its moody, acid-esque basslines, haunting pads, and mesmerising percussive melodies. 'In Ukraine, we have this trend of hard banging music', says Sirotkin. 'Some people have difficulty appreciating deeper grooves' So with 'Dusk' it was about making something that could be experienced in more spiritual ways. It's for people who are maybe not into the hard dance experience but still love electronic music.

Dusk releases on September 12, 2022. All proceeds will be donated to Red Cross Ukraine.

Default Position is very happy to present a brand new EP from highly accomplished producers Phillpe S. Chook and Tim Oe. Hailing from Luxembourg the duo joined forces to create "The Game Is Out There”; a highly versatile, genre bending, chunky tech house number, drawing influences from neuro funk drum and bass through to deep house and techno. This is not a track which is easily categorised; it has timeless quality which promises you something truly unique while remaining fully relevant to today's dance floors.

 

Second on the EP is "Naked Tree" (written and produced by Chook alone this time) delivering more of an epic main room energy; with its powerful synth leads. If you get to the point in a set where you want to create real intensity, this could definitely be the tool for you.

 

Chook comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience; having made a name for himself in the world of techno influenced drum and bass. His label, Full Force recordings garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik, Calyx and Teebee all queing up to work the label's releases into their sets. More recently Chook has gone on to co-found the highly successful band Monophona; together with singer-song writer Claudine Muno and Jorsch Kass on drums and percussion. Here we experience a fusion of Chook's deep edgy electronic routes, combined with the delicate intimacies of folk and acoustic sensibilities.

 

Tim Oé moved to Frankfurt/Germany at the age of 20 in order to pursue a career in House and Techno production. He soon had the opportunity to release his music on various labels including: Welt Recordings (Nima Gorji’s label) Supplemental (Guy Gerber’s Label) and Herz ist Trumpf (to name a few). Currently Tim is also exploring new musical territory playing bass guitar in his Luxembourg-based band Mother Heroine.

Default Position are happy to announce ‘The Warrior’ – a long anticipated EP from Joseph S Joyce & Atmo Paritosh; which also features a remix from a talented new Belgian producer named Daniel[i]. The original mix is a dubby dreamy sequence with many twists, slowly building in complexity before deconstructing into an almost beat-less dub soundscape. Daniel[i]'s more uptempo remix is a little more dance floor orientated whilst remaining true to the vibe and spirit of the original; making it the perfect tool for the discerning techno performer.

Atmo and Joe have been working together on tracks for a few years, after meeting at a gig in Ibiza. The pair instantly formed a connection through a shared appreciation of the deeper styles of dance music and the philosophical and spiritual tensions that go hand in hand with this genre. In the studio they were always able to enjoy focused and constructive sessions where they could be open and frank with one another, whilst quickly finding common ground and an agreed direction to take their music. This is a dynamic that can be quite rare to find.

This EP’s title ‘The Warrior’ stems from a body of psychology relating to four archetypal characteristics known as King/Queen, Warrior, Magician and Lover. The model, popularised through the modern works of Robert More, Douglas Gillete and Dr Paul Dobrowsky can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophy. The ideology has taken on many forms and interpretations over the ages. The application of this model is most prevalent today among psychoanalytic studies and therapies surrounding masculinity. Jungian psychologist Robert Moore argues that masculinity is made up of these four archetypal male energies which serve different purposes. The theories go on to suggest that each of us possess a dominant temperament. Some of us may have a particularly King or Queen like temperament; someone who oversees, protects, and governs. The lover may find themselves overwhelmed by their artistry, consumed by matters of the heart, excelling in creativity but lacking pragmatism. The magician is smart, a natural performer, always first to take to the stage. The warrior is a take charge kind of person, very logical, organised and targeted.

One of Dr Paul Dobransky’s seminars indicate that through our romantic relationships we may often attract people of opposite temperaments, which forms a subconscious process of balancing or centering of our conscious condition. A lover may find some tenacity and direction with a warrior, where as a magician may feel someone with a king or queen temperament satisfies something that they themselves are lacking. As these two temperaments spend time with one another in relationship, what they stand to gain is a more centered psychological condition. For instance, the lover may begin to absorb and incorporate traits from their warrior partner, and in turn the magician stabilises with a king or queen. The ideal of course, is to have adopted an equal measure of each of the archetypal characteristics within your nature. These ideologies suggest that it is through relationships that we can achieve this state of being, as if it were a kind of exchange of energies.

This EP focuses on inspiration drawn by the Warrior temperament, which perhaps demonstrates the most dominant of masculine energies. Exploring these kind of therapies and the story the archetypal characters can offer us some powerful explanations. The model can help us further understand the reasoning behind our individual limitations or strengths. Perhaps we can even begin to understand why some relationships may go wrong and how we can grow from them and move on.

UK house legend Terry Francis drops his first vinyl release in almost a decade on our very own Default Position record label.

Well known for his long running residency at Fabric London, Francis was seminal in the rise of tech-house and also the driving force behind Wiggle – a party and label established over two decades ago.

Meanwhile, Default Position is a fresh imprint specializing in deep electronic music, with a roster spanning Sebastian Mullaert, Atmo Paritosh, Chook & Tim Oe, Chapman, Daniel(i) and founder Joseph S Joyce to name a few.

Up first, ‘Intistars’ features an imaginative array of samples combined with elements of funk for a subterranean cut driven by a compelling groove. Next, ‘Gasworks’ demonstrates dark and edgy Detroit bass combined with raw and tough production in a surefire dancefloor workout.

On the flip, Darren Roach provides an energetic rendition of ‘Gasworks’ with a purring bassline, mesmerizing atmospherics and ghostly echoes before label founder Joseph S Joyce takes us on a deep minimal journey in true keeping with the meditative spirit of Default Position.

The title track takes its roots in Santiago's desire to prosper in life, through making the right moves and taking the right turns, amidst the noise and uncertainties, which are represented by the background chatter flowing throughout. This is a soulful array of percussion and enchanting melodies which bring a bright and positive vibe to the party. 

Second on the EP is 'Choices' - a tougher darker cut born from a moment where everything came together perfectly, whilst inspiration and ideas came effortlessly. After creating a concept however it took numerous months and what seemed to be never ending versions to achieve the final composition. 

It was worth the effort. The level of production on this EP is first class and we’re very proud to release it.

Default Position Podcast #008 Mixed By Pool (Vinyl Only)

Revered Swedish producer Sebastian Mullaert, releases his first exclusive vinyl on Default Position after the huge success of his remix to “Vedanta” in 2014.

Sebastian first made his name as one half of the acclaimed duos Minilogue and Son Kite, but in recent times focuses on his solo career, which sees him appearing at clubs and festivals all over the world and releasing on some of the industry’s most respected
labels and imprints. “Samunnati” is a brand new double vinyl EP featuring four original mixes from Mulleart, with remixes from fellow Swedish duo Knutsson/Berg, Belgium’s Daniel[i] and label founder Joseph S. Joyce. Its genesis lies in a melody recorded live on
Sebastian’s Roland SH101 which features as the intro to his Dance thru Shadowed Structures Mix. Some time after this mix was published, a young artist named Daniel[i] was so captivated and inspired by the melody he took it upon himself to sample it and create a twelve minute remix without, we might add, Sebastian’s prior consent! Sebastian was however very impressed with the remix and admired Dan’s bold initiative. The pair later decided to approach Default Position with an idea of turning it into a full EP.
The project resulted in seven individual mixes, with the melody being processed and re-sampled in many different ways, offering several contrasting styles.

Up first on the EP we have Sebastian’s “The Vocal Expression” mix, chosen as the feature track for its incredible funk and high versatility. In this version Sebastian delivers a kind of “call and response” treatment to the melody, using clever filtering
and signal processing techniques.

Up next we have Sebastian’s “In That Distorted Light Remix” which is an epic main room anthem guaranteed to lift the roof! In this version the melody is more recognizable in its original form, with additional layers from the SH101 and lots of analogue distortion, pushed to the absolute limits!

On the flip is the Samunnati (Original) mix, which perhaps lends itself most to Sebastian’s unmistakable signature sound. In this take the melody really blossoms and flowers in into a beautiful composition with layers upon layers of intricate patterns,
drowned in luscious delays and spatial effects.

Sebastian’s fourth and final mix on the EP is the “Wa Wu We Simplification” which takes us in a totally new direction, with it’s low slung dubby vibes and amazing high frequency textures.

On track number five we have the truly refreshing, unique and quirky “Samunnati (Knutsson/Berg Remix)”. When given the challenge of creating a remix from just one melody the duo have risen to the task well, with their clever choices of resampling, drum programming and signal processing.

The sixth rendition of Samunnati is by label founder Joseph. S Joyce. In this version the melody is dropped down a semitone and looped with some very subtle modulations, vocal ambiences, percussions and shakers.

Finally track seven is handed over to the instigator of the Samunnati adventure. Mr Daniel[i] reveals the famous unsolicited remix which triggered this fantastic body of work.

After meeting and exchanging music at the legendary Freerotation Festival, El Choop and Tim Gee found it only right to begin a collaboration. With Tim Gee’s past efforts as one half of Moniker and El Choop’s releases on Default Position and ETUI Records, both artists were already operating from the dubbier corners of house and techno, the duo’s styles achieved the perfect synergy to form their first EP; Mitchell’s Fold. 

Named after an ancient stone circle hidden in the hills of the Welsh border, Mitchell’s Fold offers eyes into a dark void drowned with morphing static, cavernous reverbs, and splitting dub chords. The EP marks the first in a series of hand stamped vinyl only releases from the Default Position catalogue.

Default Position is a London/Berlin-based record label founded by Joseph S Joyce which specialises in emotive forms of electronic music. The label gets its name from a term that is widely used in psychology, referring to a person's natural tendency or reaction to something or someone. A person's default position is often based on deeply embedded core beliefs about themselves or the world around them, often originating from childhood. Many of us will have to challenge our default positions in life, especially if we've developed negative ones. In terms of creativity, however, we believe that the default position serves something of great value. We believe it represents an artist's fundamental frequency, a place of creative authenticity, devoid of external influences or material motive. When an artist's output comes from their default position they express their truth. Our aim is to help them deliver their message.
