It normally bodes well when a record can enchant a packed-out tent at a festival before it’s known to the world, so when Simon Dunmore played ‘Give It Up’ to a few thousand ravers at Defected’s inaugural London FSTVL and got the adoring reaction he did, it was clear this was one of those records that will leave a lasting impression on the dancefloor. Italian duo Havoc & Lawn make their Defected debut with the track, partnering up with London vocalist Jinadu to release this soulful and atmospheric club cut. This exciting first outing on Defected is not one to be missed.

Defected regular OFFAIAH returns to the imprint with ‘Private Show’, his latest dose of expansive, club-focussed house, after storming hits ‘Soldier’, ‘Work It Out’ and ‘Push Pull’ ignited dancefloors across the globe. Kicking off with his Re-Edit, where a deep wandering bassline, swelling pads and tension building drops provide a groove-led backdrop to the seductive vocal. Up next, NYC’s Moon Rocket steps up to remix, taking a stripped-back approach with industrial synth stabs and ambient breaks, married with a deepened vocal. Finally, OFFAIAH’s original version rounds off the release, where we see the producer flexing his musical muscles by exploring new sounds and tech-leaning influences, producing a cut undoubtedly destined for main room raving. Hot on the heels of his debut release on Defected ‘It Is What It Is’, Brazilian powerhouse DJ and producer Vintage Culture steps up to remix one of the label’s biggest releases of late, Louie Vega and The Martinez Brothers’ ‘Let It Go’ with Marc E. Bassy. The original record, a homage to NYC’s rich Latin American dance culture, was as slick, soulful and groove-filled as expected from two generations of the city’s finest, making its way onto the Radio 1 playlist and inspiring remixes from Honey Dijon and Dom Dolla already. True to form Vintage Culture’s mix is flawlessly executed, as bold keys, stirring builds and an addictive bassline make this a record begging to be heard on the dancefloor.

When Radio 1’s Danny Howard brought his Lockdown Linkup series to the world in 2020, he set about teaming up the world’s leading dance producers for a collection of very special collaborations. Among those set up by the series was long-time friend of Defected Dennis Ferrer and South London trio Disciples, making for a powerful but perhaps unexpected transatlantic partnership. With both artists boasting impressive accolades that include platinum-selling records as well as bona fide underground anthems, they enlisted the help of acclaimed songwriter James Yuill to create ‘Whisper’. With its ethereal vocal, atmospheric keys and memorable guitar strings, married together by a club-friendly bassline, it’s no surprise this exquisitely produced debut would catch the attention of Defected’s Simon Dunmore, who now gives the track a full release on the imprint.
