Palms Trax signals the arrival of his new label CWPT with ‘Petu’, a new single featuring South African vocalist, Nonku Phiri. Originally debuting in dub form during the Berlin-based DJ and producer’s set at The Music Locker as part of Grand Theft Auto Online, ‘Petu’ reemerges here as a soulful collaboration, neatly complimented by a wide-eyed take from Masalo.

Initially written as a slow-heating instrumental to connect the various musical dots across a DJ set, Palms Trax nonetheless had a vocalist in mind throughout, a fresh voice to lend ‘Petu’ universality and energy. Introduced through mutual friend Esa, Johannesburg’s Nonku Phiri draws on her signature style influenced by vintage Afropop styles and folk traditions, delivering a smooth and vulnerable tale of desire. Triumphant brass recorded by instrumental collective Jungle By Night adds to the depth of instrumentation and feeling throughout, each element driven by Palms Trax’s ebullient percussion and an altogether celebratory energy felt across both the original and dub cuts.

Closely associated with Dutch dance music staple Rush Hour Records, Masalo subtly raises the tempo on his high-energy rework of Petu, spinning off the interconnected elements of the original into a memorable and gloriously Italo-tinged house trip.

Established in 2021, CWPT will play home to Palms Trax original productions alongside collaborations, mixtapes, new-generation artists and vital reissues. An online blog will feature interviews, reportage and charts exploring the stories past and present at the fringe of Palms Trax’s wide-reaching record collection.

For the label’s maiden voyage, Palms Trax teams up with South African vocalist Nonku Phiri for the soulful, Afropop-inspired disco groover ‘Petu’.

The hawk-eyed amongst you may recognise the dub version of ‘Petu’ from Palms Trax’s set at The Music Locker as part of Grand Theft Auto Online, but it’s the supercharged remix from Amsterdam-based producer Masalo that gets our pick for the premiere. Enjoy!

The producer and vocalist team of Sam Divine and Josh Barry return to Defected once more with ‘Saved By The Record’. The collaboration follows 2023’s ‘Take My Hand’ which saw the pair quickly establish a rewarding working relationship and friendship, resulting in a dancefloor-ready track with striking vocals that dominated the summer and saw major radio play across BBC Radio 1, KISS FM, and Sirius XM in the US. Kicking off 2024 with a bang, Sam Divine has collaborated with Hannah Wants and Jem Cooke on Defected’s Together series, released a compilation aligning with their inclusive Miami Music Week 2024 takeover, and is now celebrating 9 years of her own imprint DVINE Sounds as she prepares for a busy 2024 touring schedule that includes Ushuaïa Ibiza, a headline Australian / New Zealand tour, and Glastonbury Festival. Now the acclaimed DJ and Defected radio host returns with the second of five singles on Defected planned for 2024, ‘Saved By The Record’, alongside the talented vocalist Josh Barry, an artist who has previously appeared on records by Nile Rodgers and Gorgon City. The first ever release under their Selace pseudonym, the record comes laden with lingering organ chords and stunningly raw vocals, echoing the stripped back quality of Switch’s ‘I Still Love You’ and with a similar deep-reaching feel to Massive Attack’s early 90s classic ‘Unfinished Sympathy’. Opening the two-track release is Danny edit this summer’s seminal track The Vision’s ‘Heaven’, interweaving a gloriously groovy bassline with Andreya Triana’s vocal to produce an extended, DJ friendly mix that he sent crowds wild with at Dekmental Festival. In times of trouble and uncertainty music can provide relief for the soul, and DAVIE’s triumphant Defected debut ‘Testify’ does exactly that. A joyous introduction to the Brooklyn artist, this release demonstrates an ability to strike the balance between classic and contemporary sounds seamlessly. Steeped in music from a young age, DAVIE followed the path many soul greats did before him, joining the choir in a local church where his father was a pastor. Describing ‘Testify’ as, “a dance song not a gospel song ,” the record remains inspired by his upbringing up in the church, radiating all the energy and atmosphere of worship in full flow. Rich instrumentation provides the backdrop for DAVIE’s flawless vocals, along with a serious dose of funk, making this label debut nothing short of a future classic.
