Fake news has been rife throughout the pandemic, one example of which being the claim that swans and dolphins had been spotted swimming in Venice's canals. This bogus story (which actually turned out to be sort of true in the end) was the title inspiration for Berlin-based producer @guavanoise's latest EP, 'The Dolphins Are Back In Venice'. Forthcoming on Control Freak Recordings, the club-ready EP finds collaborations with some of the cream of the UK's bass producers, Breaka (listen to his Dummy Mix here), and LUXE. We're premiering EP track 'SZD Orion' here, a track that comes complete with skittering hi hats and cosmic, floating synths - sonically apt for a track that was inspired by flight. "I always think it's essential to start with a track title before making a piece of music," Guava says. "I'd recently been reading about the 1972 Gliding World Championships, in which Polish pilot Jan Wróblewski won flying a glider called the SZD-Orion. I thought it was an excellent title for a piece of music. Most of my tunes are inspired by flight; in the same way, Kraftwerk used the 'Trans Europe Express' to convey a sonic narrative. When I write music, there is always a theme and a story that I'm trying to tell. In this piece, you can hear Jan gliding from cloud to cloud with the bubbling synthesisers representing the turbulence and air moving around him."

OS Premiere: James Bangura - Target Velocity [Holding Hands Submerged]

Mantissa’s second venture into the label space comes from Bristol-born DJ / producer & radio host Bex. Percussive, heavy, bolty and jolty, the record is full of moments destined for those wanting to lose themselves on the dancefloor through Bex’s signature emotive soundscapes.

Her late 2021 debut EP release, “Feels EP” felt reflective and warm, influenced by the increased introspection during lockdowns over the past two years. Her second release, Mantissa 002, sees these emotions once again taking centre stage with added dance-ready grooves born out of the return and resurgence of the freedom to dance. The record combines those emotional notes with high energy sounds, futuristic harmonies and classic but experimental dance influences.

Bex is a Bristol native, the experimental and less orderly side to dance music a key influence to her creative efforts. Holding a dance show residency “Stocks & Shares” on Noods Radio since 2018, her sound has evolved through broadening her listening during the curation of monthly shows.

The whole style of the record is influenced by Bristol’s trademark sound, alongside this inspirations such as Om Unit or James Blake are subtly clear to hear. However, many of the moods projected throughout feel equally inspired by artistic influences beyond those of specific artists or locations. “Infinite Games” could just as easily soundtrack a sci-fi epic as it could move a dancefloor.

Tunlaw Rd in DC was named after Tunlaw Farm which was located in what is now Glover Park. According to local legend during the Civil War many walnut trees were cut in that area to make gunstocks. To make the name more exotic Walnut was reversed into Tunlaw.

Mother Of Pearls (@mother-of-pearls), the duo of Tom Jarmey (@tom-jarmey) and Ed Hodge (@edward-hodge), are back in action after gracing listeners with their earth-shattering debut and sophomore releases nearly two years ago. Now they land firmly on the prolific Brooklyn label HOMAGE with their 'Gelexian Protocol' EP, serving up four delicious slices of rumbling bass and breaks along with a remix by Viers (@viers).

Based in Manchester, both Tom and Ed have quickly become consistent fixtures of clubland. Tom's releases on Holding Hands, Lobster Theremin, Dansu Discs, and more, and Ed's releases on Tresydos, Gestalt, Shall Not Fade, and Dansu Discs have proven that both artists are dependable purveyors of underground dancefloor material. Their debut collaborative EP on R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings and their sophomore release on Gunfinger Food introduced their distinct sound in 2020 and 2021 and their third full length here will deliver the next chapter of their story.

Leading off the release is 'Hive' with a weighty bassline and brain-tickling textures underneath a haunting vocal, clearly setting the tone for an A-side aimed at the most transcendent moments caught in the dance. 'Machine Language' follows appropriately with a deep chest-rattling low end and breakbeat rhythms wrapped in a warm blanket of atmosphere, earworm synths, and seductive vocal stabs. On the flip side, Mother Of Pearls amps up the energy and taps into the duo's rave influence with 'Peace On Halcyon', pairing hyper rhythms with a piercing synth and booming bass. Rounding out the originals is the Ambient Mix of 'Machine Language', with meditative textures delicately guiding the listener on a blissful sonic journey. Finally completing the release is the Viers remix of 'Peace On Halcyon', completely flipping the original into an otherworldly bass anthem that fits right at home on this stacked release.

Brixton Soup Kitchen offers support to the homeless and in need and relies heavily on donations to sustain their work. They provide invaluable relief to a community hugely impacted by the virus, as well as a homeless population forced back onto the streets since the temporary housing provided came to an end. 

As normality resumes, the chance of another wave of cases and another inadequate response from our government grows. This along with the huge number of people already suffering from the economic impact of the virus means organisations like B.S.K. are now more important than ever.

Dexorcist, aka South London’s Si Brown, has been at the forefront of the UK electro scene since the late 90s – running the seminal Control Tower label with Radioactive Man and producing as part of a number of collaborative projects alongside his solo releases, including as Kronos Device with Bass Junkie.

His ‘Rage Signal’ EP, the first vinyl release on Ecstasy Garage Disco (following digital releases from LMajor and BufoBufo), journeys further back into his musical roots, combining his trademark industrial-strength aesthetic with elements of dub, bleep and hardcore.

‘Rage Signal’ starts the dance, blending rave whoops, slamming breaks, acerbic hoovers and vintage sci-fi samples for a track heavily championed by Local Group, the duo label boss Corporeal Face is part of. The searing bass, booming 808s and urgent bleeps of ‘Centurion’ then underline its gravelly vocal, which aptly attests to the roughness of the 21st century.

‘Don’t Come Cryin’ is another huge slice of thumping 140bpm rave-inspired breaks, Britcore vocals and urgent, winding melody adding chaotic force to the bass and stab lead. ‘Jah’s Comin’ closes out, a prophetic vocal, hefty sub, dubbed out horns and turntablist scratching heralding his arrival – while also signing off an EP that unites electro’s bass weight with the undying energy of rave’s early days.
