The wheels had slowly stopped turning; the whole world had shut down. What marked danger for humanity, wielded freedom for nature — now plant and wildlife could thrive in places that had once been impossible. Some travelled to the glistening waters of the canals, while others took to the sky in search of new climes to mate. It's amazing what can happen when the power's switched off for just a moment...

Two years ago Berlin-based producer and musician Guava took care of the second release for London's Control Freak Recordings, and now he's returning for his second EP, ‘The Dolphins are Back in Venice’, but this time he's bringing a few friends along with him for the ride. Fellow producers LUXE and Breaka join for two of the four tracks, all of which showcase Guava's dexterity at merging digital and analog practices. Coming via the label's hand-stamped white label series, the release matches syncopated rhythms and weighty low end with self-sampled guitar licks and playful melodies.

Brighton-via-London duo Heritage return to Scuffed Recordings with brand new garage track ‘Chrome’, out 11th February 2022 on the Scuffed Bits singles series.

Heritage last appeared on Scuffed in 2020 with their ‘Revelation’ EP, and the title track has since become one of the defining tracks from the UK label. The EP saw wide-reaching support from the likes of Oneman, SHERELLE, Anz, and Moxie, and showed Heritage’s diverse production chops from upbeat breaks to moody, heads-down UK bass.

Now making their return to Scuffed, Heritage present ‘Chrome’, which leans heavily on the duo’s UK garage influences with a swung groove, pulsing bass, and undulating synths.

Scuffed Bits started in January 2022 as an outlet for digital-only singles, launching with ‘Purple Hilt’ from 95Bones and Scuffed co-founder Wager. Scuffed Bits will run alongside the main Scuffed Recordings schedule with new releases each month from artists on the Scuffed roster as well as friends of the label.

‘Chrome’ will be released on Scuffed on all digital platforms on 11th February 2022.

On February 25th, Palms Out will release the first in a series of compilations on cassette and digital. Titled plainly: "End Broken Windows", 100% of the proceeds of the series will go to charity in an effort to raise awareness about broken windows policing methods. Specifically, I hope this project contributes in some small way to spreading the word about the ways in which policing and prosecuting low-level offenses serves only as a way of terrorizing and traumatizing vulnerable populations, without achieving the intended goal of preventing violent crime. The theoretical premise of broken windows policing is fundamentally flawed, and woefully misguided -- there is no evidence that focusing police power on low level violations like sex work, loitering, minor vandalism, petit theft, minor drug offenses, etc. leads to any reduction in violent crime. The practice must end.

Each volume of the series will benefit a different charity doing work to counteract the effects of broken windows policing; all it really does is criminalize being black, trans, queer, young, unhoused, etc. The first volume will benefit the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund (swopbehindbars.org/donate). Sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by broken windows policing, and should never be forced to spend a single night in jail merely for exercising agency over their own bodies.

Musically and conceptually, this record is inspired by a place where broken windows policing is disproportionately felt: the subway/metro. I gave all of the artists the vague prompt to write music inspired by the NYC subway system -- and the results were expectedly varying. For this volume, I pursued artists who have been generally exploring midtempo dance music without focus on 4 to the floor drum patterns. The result was a collection of largely breakbeat-oriented songs, some with direct classic NYC & Detroit electro references, others with more melodic and euphoric UK hardcore inspiration, and others still that kind of split the difference between modern bass and Baltimore club (for lack of better descriptors).

Manchester producer Monir specialises in soundscapes with chest-rattling subs and chin-scratching production displays. While his style is not genre bound, it is akin to fellow Mancunian Walton and is heavily influenced by UK labels Livity Sound, Hessle and Timedance, to name a few.

His MELD EP ‘Still Running’ is an ode to UK Dubstep and heavily features archetypal sounds used in seminal tracks of that era. This is cleverly intertwined through his use of sampling in the title track, as a reference to the UK Dubstep aesthetic that’s still running through much of UK Techno to this day.
