Next up at Edwin Music channel is Berlin-based producer and DJ @benediktfrey and his close friend @menqui with whom he co-runs the label R.i.O.

For EDWIN MUSIC CHANNEL, he joined forces with his friend Menqui, who is overseeing the administration for the R.i.O. label, is part of the Berlin-based Muting The Noise Record Store and Distribution crew, runs a radio show for Cashmere Radio and plays regular in all those small, but delicate Berlin bars and little dancefloor venues. Together they prepared an epic mix, created live and direct in Menqui’s living room, featuring all sorts of music from pop, Trip-Hop, and Hip-hop to free-tripping electronic grooves. Relive ZMAR’s oddball sonics takeover at our favorite Berlin spot, @Sameheads with Dasha Davai's set — the perfect warm-up for the festival, coming August 15–17.

This mix pulls together a wide range of material from Japan’s underground between the 1980s and 1990s and focuses on lesser-known and largely forgotten corners of its music scenes across two decades. Pulled from cassettes, privately pressed LPs, demos and worn flexi-discs, the mix moves mostly through DIY avant-garde music and things that don’t really fit anywhere at all. 
 
It’s the sound‑scape of neon‑lit backstreets, late‑night imagination and hidden creativity. A celebration of Japan’s unsung pioneers who never rose to fame yet left indelible imprints in tape loops and DIY pressings. The title refers to that space just out of view, beyond what was documented or preserved, music made outside the spotlight but still full of intention and invention.
 
You’ll hear work from artists like Silent Pulse, Be-2, Normal Brain, K. Yoshimatu, Ayuo Takahashi, and Chance Operation, alongside anonymous or pseudonymous projects like The Husband, Speaking Furniture, and Flare. Some pieces are meditative and sparse, others more chaotic and intense, but all sit just outside of easy categorisation. 
 
The black-and-white cutout of the artists in the artwork captures Peters - also known as The Peaters - a duo formed in Osaka in 1985 by Peter Hayashi and Chaka Kajiyama. Their off-kilter synth pop mirrored the British wave of the era, but filtered through a warped lens all of their own.
 
There’s no attempt at chronology in this mix, more of a drift through mood and texture. Tracks fold into each other, fragments blur, and the medium itself (tape hiss, distortion, decay) becomes part of the atmosphere.

A three-hour mix from 10 years ago which I haven't until now shared (having only recently discovered a copy, when it was being played at a friends BBQ!). It was recorded at a villa party in Ibiza, timed for the opening parties weekend, and the party itself was celebrating 10 years of similarly favoured soirees. To this day it remains one of the best parties I've played at (playing alongside Lowlifes Michael Cook). With it being a 10 yr anniversary, it's a particularly celebratory set. :)

De Kat Memwa is a mix series which aims to cherish talented artists from all over the world who are seeking to promote non-obvious music through thoughtful storytelling! 

De Kat Memwa is curated by Prince of Gosplan (Kirill O.) who is also performing as a DJ under the eponymous name.

De Kat Memwa is a resident of Malmö-based @retreatradio with (non-)ambient show 'Deep Relief' and collaborative experimental dance music show 'Ordealia' w/ @jonteprippz 

In the beginning, in addition, to the mix series De Kat Memwa was extended as DJ's trio with the participation of @andrew-lipa & @andreykalder. All the founding members are disseminated between Sweden, Germany and the USA which makes a collective performance impossible. However, altogether we are involved in the curation and production of 'Deep Relief' show!
