Silence

Silence, when no being, no machine and not even a force of nature stirs.

And then the silence again, when all sounds seem to merge into each other on a limited frequency range, so that my mind lies down on it to rest.

But then the silence when a voice, a sound, a single Noise overlays all the others and takes their place as a loud monophony.

And also that silence when there is no longer a theme that moves voices.

And its counterpart, silence, when only one theme crushes all the others.

But I may only endure the first mentioned, and oppose the others!

Stille
Die Stille, wenn kein Wesen, keine Maschine und nicht mal eine Naturgewalt sich rührt.

Und dann die wieder die Stille, wenn alle Geräusche auf einem begrenzten Frequenzbereich in einander zu verschmelzen scheinen, so dass mein Geist sich auf ihr zur Ruhe legt.

Aber dann die Stille, wenn eine Stimme, ein Klang, ein einziges Krach alle anderen überlagert und an ihrer Statt als laute Monophonie tritt.

Und auch diese Stille, wenn es kein Thema mehr gibt, das Stimmen bewegt.

Und deren Gegenstück, die Stille, wenn nur ein Thema alle anderen erdrückt.

Doch mag ich nur noch die erst genannten ertragen, 
und mich den anderen entgegenstellen !

I pulled my Decade songbook out of storage a few months back and have been thinking about a Neil Young cover.  Somehow I got sidetracked this week and ended up on a performance Neil did with Devo of Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black).  I won't bore you with a history lesson but I will say that if Neil decided to spend almost 10 minutes of Human Highway on the performance below, it must have meant something to him at the time.  Plus it's really fun to play!
