Slightly edited from a live performance at the first Weeds Fest, an underground/alternative music festival held in Guangzhou, China in May 2021. Shout out to Qiii Snacks Records for organizing the festival. SuperCollider + VCV Rack + Chinese xiao 箫 flute.

Live at Guangzhou Weeds Fest 2021

The last 2/3 of a live set performed at Oil Club, Shenzhen, China. The event was a (belated) launch party for Guangzhou Underground's ambient compilation "Thanks for Stopping By," on which I have one track. Thanks to Simon Bishop for organizing and to Oil Club for as-always excellent technical support.

The last two minutes of a livecoding practice session. I liked how it was going, so I hit "record" and this is what happened.

I've spent a couple of months building generative functions into my livecoding setup. To get a handle on using them musically, I'm going back to my roots. Squeeky squelchy! Thanks to the BMoog filter in SuperCollider...

Moments of Truth

Written for the inaugural concert (Dec. 6, 2016) of the Sirius Ensemble, founded in Guangzhou, PRC, by Pierre Stordeur, Michael Garza and Yang Jing. "Jupiter Chimes" synthesizes various bell timbres using resonators and feedback delay lines, to play thick harmonies in just intonation. All synthesis is in SuperCollider; no prerecorded samples are used.

Short and simple, love and comfort. Perhaps too new-agey but (trying not to lose all my street cred) somewhat reminiscent of Music for Airports... loosely... maybe... please don't throw tomatoes at me for saying that :-p

I first found Myristica's chillout music about a year ago and have loved it dearly ever since. This track was inspired by Mei and is written for her.

Oliver Sadie — Mei's View

The first of two works presented in the Xinghai Conservatory Computer Ensemble concert, June 22, 2018. A duo performance, with a student, 何天煜 (He Tianyu), performing a few granular-synthesis patches and myself adding beats and texture by live-coding. The form is perhaps a bit self-indulgent, but I like where it ends up.

统一体 Unity

The second of two works presented in the Xinghai Conservatory Computer Ensemble concert, June 22, 2018. It is made entirely of granular-synthesis manipulation of found sounds and musical quotations, performed by 25 students. This recording is a mixdown prepared from the individual students' performances in the concert.

木-金-水 Wood-Metal-Water

Quietcode 1.0 is computer music, improvised by live coding, with a quiet, meditative outlook. It begins as you see, with a blank screen. Except for a xiao 箫 flute, all instruments and rhythms were written in real time using short code instructions (written in my chucklib-livecode dialect for the SuperCollider audio programming environment). The performance was 55 minutes; this version is edited.
