we got Christians and Muslims and Hindus
all agree that our essence is love
but then we lock our doors and shutter windows
knowing what all we're capable of

yeah we got Shakespeare, Voltaire and Sartre
they taught us what it is to be good
(everyone wants to be good)
yet we're scared when somebody darker
jogs around our neighborhood

now, we've come a long way
since some proteins made connection

we've gotten real good
at not dying from infection

we're just not too good at being people

most of us (people) make terrible people
