Edward Snowden Speaks Out Against NSA "Dragnet Mass Surveillance"

http://www.democracynow.org - Nearly a decade after the George W. Bush administration's warrantless spying program came to light, the issue of mass government surveillance has again sparked a global outcry with the disclosures of whistleblower Edward Snowden. Leaks of National Security Agency files have exposed a mammoth spying apparatus that stretches across the planet, from phone records to text messages to social media and email, from the internal communications of climate summits to those of foreign missions and even individual heads of state. Today privacy advocates are holding one of their biggest online actions so far with "The Day We Fight Back Against Mass Surveillance." Thousands of websites will speak in one voice, displaying a banner encouraging visitors to fight back by posting memes and changing their social media avatars to reflect their demands, as well as contacting their members of Congress to push through surveillance reform legislation. The action is inspired in part by the late internet open-access activist  Aaron Swartz, who helped set a precedent in January 2012 when more than 8,000 websites went dark for 12 hours in protest of a pair of controversial bills that were being debated in Congress: the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). The bills died in committee in the wake of protests. We discuss today's global action with Rainey Reitman, activism director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation and co-founder of the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

The Rise of America’s Secret Government: The Deadly Legacy of Ex-CIA Director Allen Dulles

On a cold December night in 1773, a small group of men disguised with printer’s ink and paint vandalized three cargo ships lying at anchor in Boston Harbor. The so-called Boston Tea Party was a milestone on the road to Revolution.

The Boston Tea Party was the result of attempts by the government of Great Britain to collect taxes, but also to protect the tea monopoly.

On December 17, 1773 approximately sixty men boarded three merchant vessels anchored in Boston Harbor. They tossed into the water, 340 chests of prime Cantonese tea belonging to the British East India Company.

There appears to be a mindset that is being pushed upon the students on college campuses that life is going to be easy and everything will be given to you. It doesn’t take long after college to realize that this is not the case. Life does not respond to any of us this way. According to a recent report, many college students are coming face to face with this reality while still in college. As a matter of fact, according to WND.com, ‘the second highest cause of death among college students is suicide.’ What is going on? We are witnessing a rise of a narcissistic, self-focused, rebellious generation upon our campuses.

When President Obama declared that Israel would have to go back to the indefensible borders of the 1967 lines, it was Chuck Pierce who prophesied that we would return to the atmosphere of 1967. It is a crazy reality to consider that one who is part of our nation’s leadership, Secretary of State John Kerry, was part of the rebellion in our nation against the Vietnam War in 1967. These are truly precarious days.

College Students Going Insane Suicide Second Leading Cause Of Death On College Campus-

Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence, I should consider myself as guilty of treason... what means this martial array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? Can gentlemen assign any other possible motive for it? Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? ... Sir, we have done everything that could be done, to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne. It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace, but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! As part of my storytelling appearances for children, I often use selections from folklore, myth and legend. As part of my rehearsal process and as a lesson in the oral tradition, I adlib and improv the text as well as doing some recitations of the published text. I often page through Shakespeare's sonnets -- I love finding a new lesser known favorite and this one is my latest. The romantic sentiment is a simple one -- leave me now, and the rest of life's troubles will pale in comparison.

"More than any other major Victorian poet, she (Barrett Browning) explicitly and directly confronts political issues, particularly those concerning women. Like Tennyson, her husband, and many other contemporaries, she began as a disciple of Shelley who found the Romantic visionary mode compelling, and like them, she later developed a poetry of social, moral, and political commitment. Part of her sense of the poet's responsibility appears in her many early religious poems, but it appears even more as an attachment to themes involving domestic, international, and sexual politics....
After settling in Florence after her elopement with Robert Browning in 1846, she took up the cause of Italian nationalism, and this subject produced Casa Guidi Windows (1851) and Poems before Congress (1860). "Mother and Poet" (1862), which bears the subtitle "Turin, after News from Gaeta, 1861," is a lyric spoken by the Italian poet and patriot Laura Savio upon learning that both her sons have died in the cause of Italian liberty. Combining her interests in the fate of women, the role of the female poet, and the events of the Risorgimento, this poem records the cost and the pain of the struggle."
