His breakthrough came when “Dystopia” hit the shelves in 2017. The diverse three-track techno EP on ARTS is already considered a modern classic. One of the most exciting DJs from the new Berlin scene, originally from Ukraine, ALIS. has really taken off over the last year - appearing at such venues as Tresor Berlin, FUSE Brussels, P.A.L. Hamburg, HÖR Berlin, Bret Amsterdam, RSO Berlin, Rote Sonne Munich and sharing booth with some of the best and brightest across the world. Her free spirited and high energy sound mixes all different genres from 00s tribal and hardgroove techno, ghetto & hard house, 90s trance, UK garage and more. She's very versatile with infectious energy that continues to grow into other genres, mediums and more. By recently joining Berlin based collective @tymeberlin, ALIS. is helping in organization of non-profit event series, which include music performances, talks and workshops to encourage cross-cultural exchange and to rebuild new networks among DJs, musicians, contemporary artists and cultural activists in Berlin with a common goal of supporting her native country Ukraine. The DifferentSound Podcast #278 welcomes Mareena! Trends come and go, but some music is simply timeless. This is where Mareena’s focus as an artist lies. As a resident at Tresor and label owner at Unrush, she continues to leave her unmistakable mark as an artist. As a DJ she is chameleon, carefully stitching together immaculate and immersive sounds that will quickly turn any discerning dance floor into a sweaty rave. Lush ambient sets create a balance within Mareena's musical sphere, and one can immediately sense that she feels at home no matter the setting.  However, her career encompasses much more than just DJing. In the last few years, she has also emerged as an adept producer, with releases on Muzan Editions, Tresor, as well her own label, Unrush. These releases display the refinement of her production skills, where her dedication to modular synthesis has transpired into a palpable passion for discovering new sonic pathways. Unrush has grown too. With over 60 mixes and 4 compilations released to date, the series has expanded to include a broad family of artists and shows no signs of slowing down. All of these achievements have established Mareena as a powerful artistic and curatorial voice within the underground electronic music scene.

DifferentSound invites Operator (Southsea)

The DifferentSound Podcast #288 welcomes Operator! Operator is the alias of UK Techno artist Rich Jones, who has been DJing since the late 90s and producing since the early 00ʼs. After signing multiple successful 12” E.Pʼs to Soma, 8 Sided Dice and appearing on Richie Hawtinʼs Minus, Rich moved away from the trendy big room sound of the time and created Operator in 2012, to let his creative hair down and experiment with a wider sonic palette. This led to well received vinyl E.Pʼs on Audio Assault and Singular initially, and more recently releases on Mindtrip, Symbolism and a 12” LP on Mord. Rich also runs Gnosis Records, which he reserves for his more quirky and weird creations, occasionally veering into house flavours. Being from the UK, where in the early 00ʼs house and techno were often happy bed fellows, this influence is clear in his heavily groovy, swung style. Although always keeping abreast of current trends, Rich mostly focuses on a timeless ‘keep it different, keep it groovyʼ approach, with a penchant for heavy drums, subtle details in the sequence and lots of analog texture.  Noticeable gigs for Rich have included Tresor, Fold, Corsica Studios and Forsage, but for various reasons in the interest of health Rich has hung up his headphones for the foreseeable future. Rich continues to work tirelessly in the studio, though, and has many forthcoming projects in the works, including an E.P on the venerable Ilian Tape, a second release on Ben Simʼs Symbolism and a 12” on Pleistocene Future along with various plans for Gnosis.

Strongly inspired by the dirty and energetic sound of the 90s, Brazilian-based artist Nicolas Vogler began his music career by DJing at underground events in his home country, developing over the years an extensive collection of tracks that reflect his keen research and unique musical identity. Through his typical funky, fast, and introspective sound, Nicolas started releasing his tracks through his own personal label NCLS which quickly gained notoriety and attracted support from renowned DJs worldwide.
