- I believe you considered 2012 a real breakthrough year for you, so how are you hoping to better it in 2013? Is it all going to plan so far?

All is going well, thanks. For me personally 2012 was an amazing year full of experiences. I learned a lot as a DJ, producer and label owner and consider this a process of formation. I’m stll right in the middle of it and try to continuously push the quality of my work.
Music wise I will release an EP on New York’s STRANJJURimprint, there will be a feature with Stee Downes on the Brazilian label Playperview run by HQNO & FABO and of course another EP on my own label Mother Recordings. I’m particularly looking forward to this one because I was able to win over HOLLIS P. MONROE & OVERNITE as vocalists and on top of that it contains a remix by THE MEKANISM, yeeeah .

- You're the brains behind the Mother Recordings imprint. How did that come about?

Well me being the brains is not quite correct. We are collective of friends and music aficionados from the foot of the Kreuzberg Mountain in Berlin and together felt that the time was right to start our own thing. The actual impulse was to create a platform that gives us the freedom to release the music that we create, a sort of playground for friends that has taken the shape of an independent house label. Mother Recordings stands for a certain type of quality. For our artwork we collaborate with ELROY one of the top 10 graphic designers from France. SHOW-B is our in-house sound engineer and also responsible for the mastering. We have our legal advisor CONSTANTIN who’s also a musician and journalist, responsible for the presswork. Although some of us have been working in the music industry for years, we still feel a bit like the new kids on the block. We only started the label at the beginning of 2012.
And we’re definitely not another digital label. We continue to put out vinyl, even if it’s just to please the dinosaurs, hahaha… All of this is important to us and our fans are feeling it too. The feedback so far has been amazingly positive and that gives us the spur to raise the bar even further.

- You also recently signed to the JACKMODE AGENCY. What does that mean for your career? 

Yes, I’m super happy about that. It feels great to be part of such a professional team now. I’ve known most of the artists personally since years. Some of them are good friends of mine and I love and respect their work. Jackmode Agency is doing an incredible job and I feel being well taken care of. It’s a bit like being a new member to the soccer team, and not just any  - FC Bayern München, my favourite one, hahaha….

- You also have an upcoming release on Kev O'Brien's Stranjjur imprint. How did that come about? Have you been a fan of the label for some time? 

Woha, now somebody has been doing their research . Yes, it’s true and I’m really looking forward to this one. It will be out end of the month with remixes by HEARTHUG and CHRIS LUZZ. I truly respect this label and collect and support every record they’ve been putting out since day one. I guess you could say I’m a huge fan. 
How did it come about? Hmm, let me think. KEV O BRIAN´S not only doing a great job as head of the label but he’s also managing the Stranjjur artists. He contacted me and sent me a couple of demos of which the ones from Havens+Hart and Art in Motion got my attention right away. They were extraordinary. Believe me when I say this because we get sent a lot of stuff. These guys have found their own approach of creating contemporary house music. It contains loads of funk and a certain warmth that is quite unique. The groove and the custom vocoder tracks simply blew me away and so we released an EP on Mother Recordings with each one of them. Ever since Kev and I have been in touch, he likes my tracks and features them in his sets. So one day he asked me if I wanted to release an EP on Stranjjur and didn’t even have to finish the sentence. Hell yeah I was up for it!

- Who are your biggest influences music wise? 

Not easy to answer that one. I’m not the kind of guy who thinks straight forward within boundaries. I’m always open for new things and ready to learn – something I believe can also be heard in my tracks. If I think back, I’ve been always listening to a lot of Funk, Hip Hop, Pop and Indie stuff so the genres truly don’t matter. I think I’m more inspired by a certain type of musician. There are so many that I look up to and respect – the list is extensive. But if I’d have to name a few, in no particular order - I would say: Quincy Jones, Prince, Rick Ruben, Dr. Dre and George Clinton.

- Are these the type of artists you're hoping to attract to MOTHER RECORDINGS, then?

The ones I just named are geniuses, unforgettable legends. It would be pretentious to measure myself against them. But newcomers who strive after these guys, produce and sound like them are always welcome. Or more than that, I would sign them with a kiss on the hand, hehehe ….
I think music wise we don’t want to be put in one specific corner. We’re open for any kind of tempo or type of electronic sounds. The important thing is that a track must convey a certain type of feeling. It’s all about the vibe no matter if they’re made for the club or for cruising in your car or down-tempo style for the living room. We’ll soon be releasing an EP by JAY WEST & MANUEL SAHAGUN that contains an electro-pop track with some serious crossover potential. 

- I gather that was the case with DANIEL DEXTER, too? Was he on your radar for some time? 

Radar is not the exact word for it. We arrived in Berlin at the same time and have been working together since forever it seems. We share the same interests and have become very close friends over time. In my view, Daniel’s a very talented producer. His instinct to create great tracks for the club is fueled by his deep knowledge of music in general and a very broad spectrum of other interest. The results can be heard on his fantastic “Focus On …” album on Poker Flat. 

- How does living in Berlin help the label? Or does it? 

It may sound a bit cliché but it actually does. If I hadn’t moved here because of my studies and the girl I was seeing at the time I would have never had the possibility to progress the way I did. It’s a very inspiring environment where I constantly meet people that have a very positive influence on me and guide me in a certain musical direction. The city’s bustling with creativity and the artistic and musical exchange within certain orbits is on a very high level. Come summer, Berlin is the coolest city on earth, the only thing missing is the sea.
 
- Is it harder to stay professional living there due to the constant party scene, though? 

I think one has to distinguish, depending on the character and type of person your are. For some it can be a vortex of endless temptations, easy to get lost in. Of course there’s the party circuit 24/7, cheap drugs on every corner and the famous 1 euro Döner (Kebab). But that’s not my thing. I prefer to enjoy the more upscale aspects that Berlin has to offer. The quality of living is very high in our city. Furthermore, during the week I consider what I do more of an office job. I have to meet deadlines and make it to appointments so I prefer to do all this with a healthy night’s sleep on my back. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a square dude. If the moment is right and my schedule allows it, I get hammered too, but it’s more like: party hard, work harder. 

 - So, before we go, I wanted to ask - what's in store with your podcast for SHA? 

Now that I’m recapitulating, I didn’t even realize that 9 of the 11 tracks I’m listening to are exclusive ones. The mix is 61 minutes long and turned out quite clubby, just as I would play a set in a regular club/party. It contains tracks from the upcoming “5 years JACKMODE” compilation, some hot exclusive tracks from MOTHER RECORDINGS, my STRANJJUR EP and of course music from friends that I like and love to support. Thanks a lot for the interview and I wish you guys loads of fun with the mix.
