Wooden Shoe is a playful concoction that warps folk song elements into kaleidoscopic new forms. The album spins like a cart wheel, traversing a richly varied sonic terrain, moving both forwards and backwards in time. The sounds are ancient yet futuristic….wurlitzer organ, mandolin and autoharp combine with bent circuits and digital artifacts in a song cycle that progresses like a hauntological play. On this their second album, Silica Gel deepen their exploration of art song by using elements of clapping games, round songs, hockets, vaudeville and folk balladry to fill out a thoroughly hand crafted songbook. The enchanting voices of Laura and Lauren weave harmonies around the listener like the dreamy revolution of a glowing carousel. The song Coming Age sums up this effect perfectly with a circular melody that could go on forever as if bound for the stars…a hymn embodying the infinite dream of a better future.

Hello and welcome to a guided preview of 8 Worlds, Sap As Tears’ first release.
Sap as Tears is best known for their field recording and documentation of undiscovered worlds. For this release, they have been kind enough to make eight of these rare recordings public. To properly understand these worlds, we need to shed old perspectives, molt away expectations, and peer into a portal unknown. Let’s get started.

A peek into a pattering orchestra at a macro scale. An unfiltered capture of a daily commute, the crinkling workday, the monotony of repetition.

Not all worlds are as inviting. We enter the ashmaker’s lair. A place of undoing, twisting, squirming, writhing. An inevitable crime scene. One should not linger here. 

But all is part of a cycle. Life giving water drizzles on the roof of your hollow. Mist curls through the darkness. This is a place for personal contemplation, cautiously sheltered from the unknown.

Let the ritual begin! Guzzle, gargle, absorb. Lick, lap, gulp.
Slurp, suck, quench. Disparate worship searching for harmony.

An off-putting stench wafts through the air. Briny liquid leaves crusted deposits on the land. Scarce nutrients are picked at and squabbled over. It is here that squalid creatures make their home.

Far from the pungent coast, new fangs poke through the frost. A crystalline truth sprouts from within; important and small. The glistening pulse melts downstream, depositing its magic along the way.

We’ve been watched, watching. Another presence sensed us from above and its young need to be fed. The sentinel moves the wind at will, and one’s place on the food chain becomes uncertain. We’ll walk quietly, leaving this place. 

Not everything is meant to be understood. Sketch an interesting form, scribble an important note, but in the dark, you only see the beam you shine. Something has been here before you and most certainly will be here after. All is shifting secrets, swirling senses. Drink deeply and tread lightly, for life is the unfolding of permanent uncertainty.
