L'Orange Signs 3 Album Deal w/ Mello Music Group

The Deal:
After selling out the first three pressings of his vinyl in under 30 days, old soul producer L'Orange has signed a 3 album production deal with MMG for 2014 & 2015.  Slated to create a combination of projects from instrumental, to jazz singers, to alternative edged collaborations with emcees, L'Orange is looking to bring his distinct sound to Mello's audience, while continuing to push the boundaries of his musical explorations. 

The Sound:
Prohibition era soul samples combine with lingering smoke in the air on L'Orange productions.  Able to bring the crackle of vintage radio back in head nodding introspective journeys, L'Orange's ability lies in making complex productions seamless, allowing listeners to slide into another world. L'Orange's talent as a producer is his ability to develop full visions that create environments for artists and listeners alike. L'Orange is somewhere between early DJ Shadow, Madlib, Portishead, and Billie Holiday. 

The Instant Grat:
L'Orange recently recruited Mr. Lif & John Robinson for his contribution to the MMG compilation "Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows".  The track, titled "The Lost Nova", combines jazz rhythms, classic crackle, and intricate drum patterns for the raspy voiced Mr. Lif to tell his tale of verbal kumite (組手) and whirlwind zephyrs, while John Robinson takes listeners to the crystal city via his astro-physical-lyrical gift and extra-galactic tactics.

Amerigo Gazaway’s *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album's foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s tangled raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm "mashup" album.


Yasiin Gaye - Inner City Travellin' Man

     In 2004, one of my best friends from high school, Ben Cabacungan Jr. was killed by a drunk driver while standing outside of 'Freebird' Music Venue in Jacksonville Beach. He was a loving, caring fuggin HILARIOUS dude and he will always be missed and never forgotten. 

     When I learned of his death, I was a junior at The University of Florida and I wrote this song as soon as I got off the phone with his sister, Kristine. The original version was released on my first album 'Intellektual Property' - this is the unreleased remix by Duval County's own, Tough Junkie.

    Since it's been 10 years since Ben was taken from us, I figured it'd be a nice time to share this cut.

     This is an old joint I wrote and recorded back in 2006. I had just moved to Atlanta and was grinding - waiting tables at a swank spot called Murphy's in Virginia-Highland. So naturally I started writing an EP called '86 Catch' that was a day in the life of the restaurant biz, juggling personal endeavors, an ex lady whom you love but cant get it together with, and all those youngins that I let waste my time back then....

     All the beats were hooked up by my homie, Nikhil Jhatakia. He was my best friend from college, a younger cat. I introduced him to Paten Locke Nikhil ended up moving to his crib in Duval for a year and studying up. They even did some co-production work together on Mr. Lif's LP, 'I Heard it Today.' The beats I was rocking were from those sessions. 

I've been sitting on this for so long, I guess it may never come out.. so here's an amuse bouche..... 

These are some of the first recordings I ever did myself, my own spot. So they sound like shit. Fucking enjoy it.

     Linking up with Supa Dave West was monumental - we had just met recently and had kicked it a bit- he did some work for me on The Southern Scramble and one day I asked him to sing over this joint - I had writtern & recorded it a year earlier and sang the hook stuff myself - he liked what I wrote so he sang over it and we ended up taking most of my stuff out, leaving in a little salt & pepper. He freestyled the end part and did everything in one take. I was blown away. This would go on to be the first of many song Dave & I co-wrote and recorded together...bless up!
