When people think of Switzerland, they think of green meadows, clear water, snow-covered mountaintops and fresh air. In the world of electronic music they think of soulful house music and an extensive clubbing past. It is in both of these environments that Marco Biagini aka KELLERKIND grew up. In the small and rural town of Solothurn KELLERKIND discovered the Chicago sound in the local clubs and became fully infected with the virus of house music. 15 years later, KELLERKIND has become an irreplaceable figure in the Swiss electronic music scene. Backflash: In the beginning, it wasn’t much more than just fun. Now though, it is a true passion. After many nights spent on the dance-floor of Solothurn’s Nacht-Schicht, KELLERKIND started to DJ himself – at first in his bedroom and soon in the clubs in and around his hometown. Warm deep house and the soulful music of Chicago were his biggest influences then and still remain to be the backbone to his sets. Very quickly KELLERKIND starts to DJ out in Switzerland’s big clubs. By 2007 Marco has already played the country’s most important venues, be it Zurich’s Hive, Rohstofflager, Rote Fabrik, Zukunft or Bern’s Formbar.His career, however, really kicks off with his first release ‘Bergluft’ in 2008. His name, which translates as ‘basement child’, can be taken quite literal, as he spends hourscreating and arranging his warm house sounds in his basement studio in Solothurn. In 2007, KELLERKIND meets the guys behind Swiss house imprint Sirion Recordings and in 2008 he releases ‘Bergluft’, a track that gets worldwide feedback. It is played out by many famous DJs, charts at number 5 of Beatport’s minimal section and even gets airtime on John Digweed’s UK radio show on Kiss100.After the sterling debut things happen quickly: Florian Meindl releases the Keller EP on his label Flash Recordings, of which the tracks ‘Natural Juice’ and ‘TomTom’ list highly in various techno charts. Later the tracks are re-released on vinyl as part of the Don’t Go Home EP, which does well with record retailers such as decks.de. In 2009, KELLERKIND’s working-relationship with Oliver Koletzki develops as he is asked to produce a remix for Koletzki’s ‘Since you are gone’. Since then he has released a shared EP on Stil vor Talent with Niko Schwind – an homage to classic house music – and has been featured on the Swiss Edition EP in 2010.

"The goal of this mix was to straddle the line between a few different sounds I’m really vibing on right now. We start things off with some haunting melodic house and transition through some indie dance and ultimately land with some peak-time bangers that have been sure bets for me this summer.

I have always been a firm believer in the power of spoken word samples from across the world to elevate house music into a more cerebral place. I have also included a collection of vocal records that tug at the heartstrings and, I hope, pull you into goosebump territory. Great songwriting in any genre is impressive, but I hold a special place in my heart for those producers and vocalists who can bring everything together in an underground record that can also work with a broader audience.

The last time I did an Electronic Groove Podcast was nearly a decade ago! Big thanks to the EG team for their continuing hard work to shine a spotlight on the various elements that make this music and culture special.

On a more somber note, please keep an eye on friends and family that may have gone quiet over the last few weeks or months. Everyone’s dealing with some level of depression, anxiety, and burnout due to the pandemic and the state of our world right now, so try to do your part to help those that may be struggling know that you’re there and feel less alone. I wander restlessly through the alleys of the gutter. The hands clawed compulsively in the pockets and the hood pulled deep into the face. Light rain accompanies my haphazard ramble through the night. My mind works subliminally. The thoughts mesh like the gears of a precision clockwork. Within seconds, details are worked out that I don't want to see. They torment me, because I know that they will not lead to perfection. All the efforts have always been in vain so far. No matter how invisible I was, no matter how valuable the loot was, no matter how many people I had deceived, the result was always the same. No satisfaction of the urge occurred. No coup was ever good enough. The special element, the extravagant, the extraordinary was always missing!

My hands tremble with rage in my pocket. The more I would be against it the clearer the desire becomes. Suddenly I am torn from my thoughts, because a guy bumped into me. He stops for a moment and examines me from top to bottom. He wrinkles his nose briefly and then continues walking. Meanwhile I feel something in my hand. A watch had gotten caught between my fingers. Slowly, my gaze wanders over to my other hand, knowing full well what to expect. I throw the wallet and the watch into the nearest trash can. It is not their value that has seduced my subconscious, but the routine. I find myself in a vicious circle. Until I complete my masterpiece, my mind will not rest.

Only years later, I will go a new way and find something that is very valuable to most people, but you can steal it from them in such a way that they don't want it back.
Is that my masterpiece?

Ich ziehe rastlos durch die Gassen der Gosse. Die Hände zwanghaft in die Taschen gekrallt und die Kapuze tief ins Gesicht gezogen. Leichter Nieselregen begleitet meinen planlosen Streifzug durch die Nacht. Mein Verstand arbeitet unterschwellig. Die Gedanken greifen blitzschnell ineinander wie die Zahnräder eines Präzisionsuhrwerks. Binnen Sekunden werden Details erarbeitet, die ich nicht sehen möchte. Sie quälen mich, da ich weiß, dass sie nicht zur Perfektion führen werden. All die Mühen waren bisher immer vergebens. Egal wie unsichtbar ich war, egal wie wertvoll die Beute war, egal wie viele Personen ich getäuscht hatte, das Ergebnis war immer dasselbe. Es trat keine Befriedigung des Triebs ein. Kein Coup war je gut genug. Das Besondere Element, das Extravagante, das Außergewöhnliche hat immer gefehlt!

Meine Hände zittern vor Wut in der Tasche. Umso mehr ich mich dagegen wäre desto deutlicher wird das Verlangen. Plötzlich werde ich aus meinen Gedanken gerissen, da mich ein Typ angerempelt hat. Er bleibt kurz stehen und mustert mich von oben bis unten. Er rümpft kurz die Nase und geht dann weiter. Währenddessen spüre ich etwas in meiner Hand. Eine Uhr hatte sich zwischen meinen Fingern verfangen. Langsam wandert mein Blick rüber zur anderen Hand, wohlwissend was mich erwarten wird. Ich schmeiße die Geldbörse und die Uhr in den nächsten Mülleimer. Nicht ihr Wert hat mein Unterbewusstsein verleitet, sondern die Routine. Ich befinde mich in einem Teufelskreis. Solange ich nicht mein Meisterstück vollbracht habe, wird mein Geist nicht ruhen. 

Erst Jahre später werde ich einen neuen Weg beschreiten und etwas finden, was für die meisten Menschen sehr wertvoll ist, aber man es ihnen so entwenden kann, dass sie es nicht wiederhaben wollen.
 Ist das etwa mein Meisterstück?
