A Rainbow In Curved Algorithms (disquiet0377)

Step 1: Define a scale of 8 notes (or sounds).
Step 2: Create a melody with 4 notes from the scale resulting from Step 1.
Step 3: Replace note 2 in the melodic sequence from Step 2 with an unused note (selected deterministically or randomly). Then do this for note 4, then for note 3, and then for note 1.
Step 4: Reintroduce the first melody as counterpoint to the result of Step 3. This establishes a pair of notes at each point in time.

My scale is a 8 note diatonic that goes:
C-D-E-F#-G#-A#-B-C 8va

My 4 note melody is C-E-C8-G#
I did the permutations suggested on step 3, I just added some high notes to give it some spark, then I went on  with step 4 and then started to develop freely.

3 different  pianos (one muted and played with mallets)

Algorithmic Permutations in Black and White (disquiet0377 )

An algorithmically composed melody, with pieces added and mingled and effects applied to create an alien (for me) and slightly curious atmosphere.
Also… I found a little funk in the auditory corners of todays challenge.
All produced in Ableton, with U-he compressors, Soundtoys effects and isotope quick mastering.

C Phrygian scale. Used Fugue machine driving Korg Module and Cyclops. I wanted to use Fugue Machine to introduce more movement and variety without straying too far from the guidelines. All of the play heads are playing different octaves at different speeds and directions and are introduced gradually throughout the piece. I introduced Cyclops towards the end to add another voice. Not super happy with it, but it was the best out of my experiments. Good brain exercise though.

The music does follow an algorithm, though slightly different than the prompt: A line of four notes is mutated, note at a time into a different line with different notes from the scale. This is then repeated two more times. Each mutation is played slightly skewed in time from each other. As played on the marimbas it makes a more complex cascading line. As played on the organ it reveals a four chord sequence that the piece ultimately ends with.

An algorithmic track with a Moog Sonic VI as the melodic and noise source.

I set up a sequence like this:

set up 8 notes and 8 note durations in two separate vectors
sample without replacement four notes and durations
play those notes / durations using a Rhodes sound, then joined by an organ sound
replace the second note, play altered notes on Rhodes and original on organ
replace the fourth note, play altered notes on Rhodes and original on organ
replace the first note, play altered notes on Rhodes and original on organ

bring back the original melody; Rhodes and organ are joined by vibraphone

repeat the whole sequence (I have it set up to repeat four times--feel free to download it 
and change it to repeat 50,000 times, or maybe zero times)

Disquiet0377 Algorithmic Assembly

I started with 12 glass bottles filled with different amounts of water.  Rolled a d12 8 times to get my 8 note scale. From here I rolled a d8 4 times to get my 4 main melody notes. The remaining notes were the replacement notes. Then I played each note in 4  different patterns. I rolled a d4 for the pattern and a d8 for the note in the specific pattern for all note selections..

TV ANNOUNCEMENT: A House That is Neglected is a House That May Be Doomed! (disquiet0377)

“The most indubitable respect in which ideas have helped mankind is numbers,” wrote the philosopher and logician Bertrand Russell. “We have become, in certain respects, progressively less like animals [in] that forethought more and more dominates [our] impulses.”

Russell believed that all human knowledge was, at most, a best guess based upon knowledge attained to that point. In his 1903 book The Principles of Mathematics, Russell argued that mathematical concepts were immune from doubt because they were constructed entirely of logic. An algorithm is really nothing more than a process — a set of rules to be followed in order to achieve a result.

The logic breaks down because life and language are slippery, inexact and subjective. A famous example of Russell’s Paradox is the barber who shaves everybody in town except those who shave themselves. Who shaves the barber? If he shaves himself, then he doesn’t shave himself; if he doesn’t, then he does. Groucho Marx once remarked that he would never join a club who would have him as a member. Suss Müsik doesn’t really make music, nor do we do much sussing. Paradoxes abound.

For this piece, a simple four-note phrase was played on piano utilizing a scale of 8 notes. The 2431 algorithm was applied not only to note sequences, but also to sustain levels and attack times. This created a weird phasing effect during transitions. The algorithm was also applied to a “scale” of wordless vocal recordings by Suss Müsik friend, collaborator and mentor Wm. Wolfgang Allen. Expect more such collaborations from this team in the very near future.

My first take on this week's assignment.

Disassembling (disquiet0377)
I know I should have used something algorithmic, like VCV Rack, but it’s Sunday night and time was getting short. It is also quite a pain to notate in iOS, so I thought I’d use Logic for a change.
   Spanish was the chosen scale with F, G, G#, A#, C, C#, E and F, and although this was chosen with the intent of ascending and descending the scale, I changed it up as things progressed. A two bar eight note melody began with A#2, G2, C3, G#2, C3, A#2, G#2 and G2. The prompt instructions were continued as suggested but then something bad happened :-O  The more I played and the more I organized notes, the more this piece killed the original intent of the prompt. But rest assured dear reader, the piece only contains those original eight notes and they are more or less in some semblance of sound.
   Logic has so many great instruments sometimes it hard to choose and ended up with more instruments than usual. Sculpture provided scatter, reflective, plastic, glass, air and water sounds. Alchemy provided odd, dark and deep bass sounds. Bit of volume automation and Chroma verb are the only additions in the mix.

I first tried to create a track out of some sound recordings I had, but that didn't work out so well. So I re-did the project with eight notes and then substituted as directed.  From there I shuffled things around and built it into a track. You can hear the original four notes and the first variation at the beginning. The only thing left from my sound recordings are the crickets and the beginning and the rain at the end. :)

I was a tad confused by the directions for this one. It says to re-do the algorithm with two notes. But I can't use notes that are unused in the second iteration, because all notes are already used when you add the two melodies together. So I tried adding different diads, then triads, then 4 note chords, making sure when replacing chords to use ones never used before. I ended up making them semi-arpegiated chords and squeezed all the notes for each note in the melody in the time frame it already took up.

After that I hooked the whole thing up to my modular system and added some extra noise.

Two sequences, original ‘altered’ is joined by the root melody, slightly arpeggiated, creating a melodic, rhythmic element, drums added via two drum machines and a drum synth/sequencer.

DSQT0377 - Algorithmic Tech Idxxiii

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
