I did this in 2012 - the idea was to apply the principle of the Shepard Tone to a melodic sample, and I found this sample here really useful, as it already contains a repetition that goes up one semitone. Once I built the neverending rise of the sample, I had fun adding the dubstep nonsense all around it - in 2012 this was der heisse scheiss, hahaha

Op Art Arpeggios (Disquiet0410)

Moire effect in sound - In this experiment, I tried to demonstrate a Moire effect in sound.  The Moire effect is typically associated with 2 or more overlapping patterns which are similar so that when moved across each other, they produce recurring patterns different from any of the original patterns. For the Moire effect in sound, I used Supercollider to play a progression of 4 chords comprised of 4, 5 or 6 notes which are "strummed", the time between notes within the chords is the same throughout the piece.  I programmed the algorithm to play all 4 chords in a repeated cycle - they start out as 4 almost completely overlapping "strums" and then slowly, with each loop the chords are dragged apart from each other by increasing the interval between the start of each chord.  As this occurs, the chords slowly become offset from each other allowing individual notes from the different chords to fill in the gaps, like overlapping combs.  This creates new patterns as the chords progressively become separated from one another until the individual chords are completely resolved.  I programmed the notes to sound like a classical nylon guitar.

This track is a response to a challenge from the Disquiet Junto: "What does the sonic equivalent of Op Art sound like?" 

In this piece, I first composed a small symphonic riff - and then cut everything up in pieces, like seeing a picture through a grid or a comb, to see if the idea of the original would "peek through" - or maybe even change character. I think it changed quite a bit; some parts gained importance, other disappeared and some got almost too intrusive. But I actually like it better like this... :)

disquiet0410 - broken syncphony

Using an image Jelie sent me from a mountain retreat I loaded it into Photosounder.
I then inverted it to get a more traditional OP black and white image. I then used the black and white tools to draw trees using the tools. 

I then took the inverted image’s sound, duplicated and reversed it. I then took the “drawn” inverted images sound, duplicated and reversed it. Using these 4 sounds I grouped them in Live to a looper and EQ.

I then dialed in some drums on the Roland DJ 808 drum sequencer for the 606, 707,808, 909 drum banks. I then used the MIDI fighter routed to a drum kit with a looper to capture a phrase that I then folded into the group Loop chain.

Another really thought/imagination provoking prompt. Thanks to Marc and Nate Trier for the initiative!

Immediately I thought of Bridget Riley's work, which I've always loved; especially her intricate colour works, which started in the 80s/90s onwards with pieces like Achæan (1981) and Nataraja (1993). I've always appreciated the considered selection of colour palette along with the rigid repetition of lines or oblique shapes. Throughout her career, Riley has meticulously studied the use of colour in paintings across history, as well as colour's application in cultures around the world. Her late work - from the 2000's onwards introduced elements of curvature and fluidity, and the semblance of repetition and repeated patterns became less apparent/distinct. 

In a sonic/musical sense, her work from these respective periods suggests a strong correlation to movement/momentum, pulses, repeated motifs, polyrhythm, phase relation and colouration of tone, etc. 

I thought it might be interesting to reference this late development in Riley's work: from the rigid forms and colour palette of Achæan (1981) and Nataraja (1993)through to her more recent works, which pull away from repetition, yet eschew the broad colour palette to only a couple of colours (such as Blue and Pink, 2001). My piece is sort of caught between works such as Nataraja and Blue and Pink.

I used a customised synth patch on my microkorg and routed the output to three effects pedals (an Ooh Wah, DD7 looper and Earthquaker Transmisser). 

The Ooh Wah is a rare bespoke pedal which I'm borrowing from a friend at the moment. It's essentially a series of bandpass filters combined with a sequencer. It adds a nice warbling effect to the synth, whilst pressing out some interesting harmonic characteristics.

The DD7 is, well..a DD7. I'm using it to capture sections of my playing and repeat infinitum, whilst overdubbing additional sections as the piece goes on.

Lastly, the Transmisser is a glorified modulated reverb, which I've employed towards the end of the piece to essentially 'blend' the colours into a homogenous impression.

It's longer than my usual submissions, since I felt a length of at least four minutes was the only way I could get this idea across.

I created two mirror image-struck-bar unit generators (with rotating presets), opposite rotating pans, opposite LFO'd pitch, opposite LFOd echo intensity--the idea is to create a sense of spatial disorientation. Code is here:

I opted for the Shepard scale, because I always wanted to something with it. This track is an arrangement of different Shepard scale recordings (and a Risset glissando), arranged by hand to match my taste, with some VST fx. The idea was to make an interesting ambient track with only Shepard/Risset sounds.

Shepard's Dream [disquiet0410]

The assignment: mimic Op Art with audio.

Tried to make it confusing as to whether the notes are ascending (guitar) or descending (synth) by gradual volume variations between the two.  Used the whole tone scale because it sounds kind of dreamy.  Rhythm is simple 8th notes, kind of trance like. Used 2 slightly different synth sounds and 2 slightly different guitar sounds alternating in an incremental pattern to play with listener expectations a bit.

3 copies of the same track with modulated phase space to mimic a piece of 60s kinetic Op Art.

VCVRack using 4 Stages to 4 JW Quantizers to 4 MI Plaits fed into a BogAudio Mix4, then into Alright Devices Chronoblob and NYSTHI Master Recorder.

This is based almost entirely off trying to create Diana Deutsch's Scale Illusion.  The first two of the 4 voices are the Analog Bass Drum setting from plaits.  Deutsch said to use a pure sine wave and as I was searching for one I ended up on the Bass Drum.  I thought it sounded pretty cool so I just stuck with that.  The other 2 voices are using the analog waveform setting. At the end I added some delay craziness just because it was fun.  I hope you enjoy.

For this one, I liked the idea, but had little idea what to do with it at the outset. So, mostly followed my instinct with this. I actually did the piece of art I used for the track first in Processing, and then from that fixated on this feeling that my vision blurred as I looked at it, and had trouble distinguishing the lines from each other. So, that gave me the inspiration to build up this noise drone, that seems to slide in and out of pitch and has these different layers that seem to peek through and disappear.

when i was thinking about this project i happened upon a file named img3417.wav which i must've recorded on my camera to test what the sound was like. fit well with the project in terms of the visual/aural connection

it was an acoustic guitar recording which was handy. altho i added a lot of fx so that doesnt really matter

i converted it to mono, duplicated this and made them into left and right channels. the right channel i applied paulstretch keeping it the same length and very little blurring

the idea was that this would create a haas effect - when the channels are offset up to ~50 milliseconds it creates a fake stereo effect. this is a psychoacoustic phenomenon because it relies on humans rudimentary capacity for echolocation (higher frequency sounds bouncing off objects arrive at the ears at slightly different times and thus give clues to location)

because paulstretch slightly adjusts the length even when you dont want it to i thought it could be used here

This recording a contribution to one of the weekly  Disquiet Junto projects open to all. The Assignment:  What does the sonic equivalent of Op Art sound like?

Starts with  shepherd tone made with guitar parts stacked- done by me but from the archive. The two sequenced pairs slipping out of sync was done in VCV rack. one track running at 98bpm one at 96 with cascading 16th notes. There are a couple of pattern changes, again these are loose and  unsynchronised. The L and Right drum clatter are also working at slightly different speeds for a phased effect. Hard panning and switching /crossing tracks also used. I added some meaningless phonemes in a repeating pattern at the end for the phantom words illusion. To me it sounds like 'peck my worm'
All roughly mixed in pro-tools.

96 : 98 Op [disquiet0410]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
