Disquiet Junto Project 0101: Analog Binary

Decided to keep this weeks Junto simple, so I recorded three instances of switching on / off 
First sound to be heard is my ceiling fan
2nd. is my electric kettle 
3rd. is the on off switch on my electric piano 
Duplicated each sound onto two different tracks panned each hard L & R timestreched one side of each "stereo" image slightly to create a phase shift kinda beat...then I thought of Mandela and wanted to create an uprising towards the end, so I duplicated everything a couple of times and displaced the new tracks a little more with long fades....to let the whole thing end with just two beats - it all falls back to the beginning... coming and going on your own.

LINEAR BELLS - Disquiet0101-Analogbinary - HiFi Furry

The three sounds are ones I had recorded a few years ago at a bakery I was making bread at. One is a Vitamix blender, the other is a 30qt mixer, and the last one I can't remember. 
I only added a little effect to the vitamix: Bode Frequency Shift. 
The others I left raw. In the spirit of this assignment, I used fade in fade out, through out the piece.

Life/Death Machine (disquiet0101-analogbinary)

I left work early as I have a ton of personal time to take before the end of the year and then I recorded my light switches with a Zoom H2 recorder. After importing the recordings I built a small dub send/return network to apply lightly. The deep droning sounds are created through micro loops one of the more interesting switches in my new apartment is the one that controls the garbage disposal after introducing the garbage disposal loop I began micro looping it to create a granular sounding pad and then towards the end layered several of them all in different spans of time off the original loop.

Make iPhone wear my worn-out socks and recorded the sound of three switches at home. 
1. Water Heater (WH)
2. Hand Vacuum (HV)
3. Water Kettle (WK)

Everything else is done in Logic Pro. The first sound that I use is that of WH. It is looping for the most part of the track and I applied phaser, delay, tremolo to it. The next sound that I layered over is WK and I applied delay and spring reverb to it. HV sound only appeared around 1:27 min mark. There's subtle delay and phaser applied to it. 

I only stumbled upon the Disquiet Juno site last week, so this is the first time submitting my piece to the group. All in all, I really enjoy the whole process of recording and making this as well as listening to everyone's work in the group. Thanks for taking time out to listen to my piece :)

Switch On Off [ disquiet0101-analogbinary ]

The project:  Make a phase composition based on the sounds of three switches.

Record the audio of three objects in your home or workplace that have on/off switches. Capture the unique sound of them being turned on and off. For each of the switches, record several seconds of this on/off action so you can create loops of a steady pace. Then create an original piece of music that employs phase shifts — that is, in which the tiny distinctions between loops create noticeable patterning as time progresses. You can use some light processing, but the sense of "switch-ness" of the source audio should never be lost.

With this project I'm using Samplr on an iPad Air.  I recorded three different switch samples, all from pull chains.   One was from a troublesome fluorescent light fixture in the deepest storage area of our lower level - that got the most texture.   The second was from a single bulb switch near the laundry.  The third involved two switches for a ceiling fan and it's light, and these were pulled at a faster but uneven tempo.  I used a Zoom H1 mounted on a mic stand on a chair, and recorded each switch for about 20 to 30 seconds.

In the Samplr project I doubled each loop and ensured that loop's twin was not reading the same areas - also, one loop had a slight bit of reverb and the other didn't.

Composition was recorded live, direct to Zoom H1.  It took me a number of attempts to create something I liked.  Ultimately, I started simple, added samples in the middle added a light touch of reverb, and in final third I withdrew different loops until ending abruptly.  There's a bit of hum in the background - I can't tell if that's from the fluorescent sample or a bad cord from the iPad to the H1, possibly both.

After 80 seconds, it gets wildly rhythmic, but a couple of loops keep a more steady pace and seem to punctuate the denser rhythms with a bold presence.  The piece begins to withdraw after 2 minute and 30 seconds.

I can't believe nobody had used "Switched-on" as a title by the time I made my piece.  It was too irresistible.  An alternate title I considered using was "Bad Chain Puller" (after Captain Beefheart), which is probably funnier.

Switched-On and Off (disquiet101-analogbinary)

Recorded three sounds as directed: A microwave, a kitchen sink (not strictly a "switch" but it does go on and off), and a small battery-powered hand drill.

In Ableton Live, loaded the sounds and made a few permutations of each, both in length and pitch.  They are brought into and out of the piece throughout.

An entry to the 101st disquiet junto weekly project  where contributors are given 4 days to create a short piece based on a unique set of rules, or guidelines. This week was to record the on/ off switching of household objects and play not-quite-synchronised  loops of these recording. Allowing phase loops to occur over the extended playback .
To the timing of a metronome , (which can just be heard in the background) I switched on and off the following:
1.Drill 
2.Massager 
3. Hex bug
4. Dry switches on broken noise generator.(pictured)
Recorded on Minidisc sony mic. Some eq ,some revb, on the drill I used some light amp o/drive for warming up the sound.On the clicking switches a short delay. Maxim on whole mix. I just re-read the instructions and I should have only have used 3. No paul stretch this week- well you can have too much of a good thing I suppose.

my house was built in 1908 - I'm using two different 'push switches' and a pull chain switch in the closet.

one push switch thunks and thunks, the other one one thunks and 'rings' on the off cycle.

the thunkthunkerer and the pull switch are copied and detuned slghtly.

the thunkringer is passed through a zebrify synth as filter, using a modified 'whirlpool, preset

one of the pull switch copies is passed through a zebrify synth as filter using a modified 'mice talk' filter.

I don't have a decent mic sitting around my apartment (and even if I did it's too noisy), so I took advantage of my studio access at my school this semester.

Simply recorded the sound of a switch on a headphone amp, a keyboard, and the wifi switch on my laptop. I looped a specific region of each sound, and chose to cut out every third repeat for each track. 

Because emergence or something.

There's also a delayed version of each track that I mix in and out to fill up empty space.

Wasting Studio Access [disquiet0101-analogbinary]

Things have been busy lately and so I haven't participated in a disquiet project for a spell.  Feels good to be back at it.   This composition uses the sounds of three switches:   

1) a portable Flashlight with a rubber push button that clicks twice to turn on and twice       to turn off 

2) a humidifier while plugged in

3) a Seth Thomas Metronome (only the on/off switch is heard)

Loops were created from the recordings and some loops were duplicated and given resonators at various harmony settings.  The Humidifier was tripled and at one point  some delay was added progressively to alter the rhythm.  Parts were added or subtracted and beats moved with each loop systematically based on groupings of 3 and 4 (these grouping were sometimes beats, sometimes measures, some times a subgroup-ing e.g. 2 beats or measures). Finally some automation of the resonators was added using the same system.

Switcheroo [disquiet0101-analogbinary]

Each switch on a '70s home-made Weather Satellite Digital Picture Processor was individually recorded and programmed into loops of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 beats in a bar, then layered. A manipulated piano completed the piece.

seclusion [disquiet0101-analogbinary]

I decided to only use switches in my office. Since recording the switch for my powerbar presented an insurmountable problem, I ended up recording the switch on my Oxygen8 Keyboard, the light switch in my office, and the switch for an old boombox, which has several intermediate stages.

I went for a lo-fi vibe, removed the incidental sounds before and after the switch recordings, but did not otherwise plan the performance. I added distortion that emphasizes the poor quality of the recording. Echo effects and occasional wild panning add some variety. The track was passed through a bit-reducing plugin for the end, making it more and more digital as the piece concludes.

The original piece was over 4 minutes long. I decided to cut out a section in the middle, dropping 2 of the 3 tracks to enable me to splice the two halves together. The resulting "radio-friendly" edit is less monotonous than the original, but perhaps less hypnotic as well.

Tick-Tack-Brap [disquiet0101-analogbinary]

In this piece I used the on/off switches of an MC-505, Casio Rapman and cassette recorder. Each item's on/off switch was performed, recorded and turned into a short loop. Each loop has a different tempo and rhythm sequence. From each raw loop, further loops were created whereby each item was modulating another at double and 4x the original tempos. Some granular and phase effects were added to create a sense of space and texture.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
