one thing i wish the html5drummachine had would be mute buttons, but then again it's about the limitations in this case

(another limitation i discovered by pressing Backspace before i saved)

additional limitation was not using perc1, perc2 and crash sounds from the techno pack as i couldn't fit them in any way

some programming on the fly and also since it can switch between 2 patterns i took advantage of that

no layering, no additional processing, direct output from the browser

Single live track = Sound of 12 FireFoxes battling for CPU cycles. Minimising the windows doesn't stop them, but has drastic effects on the tempo. Maximising them all makes them glitch along eccentrically, in a manner I found satisfying.

OK - so it's mobile and cross-platform (if it works with your browser at all...) but, sheesh, 8-bit micro's sure did it better!

Wasted couple of hours trying to reverse engineer a local cached version of the app; to apply own sound sets, or modulate the controls algorithmically. Concluded there was no point.

I don't usually work with beats or drum machines - so I found this week's assignment a bit challenging. I played with the app for a while, to figure out what to do... recorded a few live performances and tried tweaking it to it's limits fast/slow/high&low pitches... But I really wanted to make a poly rhythmical piece, so I ended up oppening Firefox and Chrome each with the HTML505 drum machine, playing the same beat at the same tempo - 120...that happened not to be exactly the same tempo, so the rhythm goes from in sync slowly shifting to out of sync and then back into sync after a while.... quite lovely I think. 
The title is a homage to Steve Reich who composed a few pieces with a similar ideas...

This week's restriction was tough, to make a track using only an HTML drum machine. I took a strict reading of this to mean no audio editing, effects or overdubbing. It was made more difficult in turn by the fact I couldn't run the site on a multitouch device, so could only tweak one button at a time. I initially tried to create something by jogging the tempo wheel but it was tricky to get any precise control. So instead I did this. One pattern with slightly shifting changes. One take. No edits. Better with headphones. I think.

I missed a lot of Juntos due to moving houses and other issues.  The current house has a big room about 500 sq ft without any furniture other than a dining room table and art.  The ceilings are 12 foot high, wood floors, so there's lots of echo.  Understandably, I want to record stuff live in this space, and that's what I did here.  Output from my old laptop to some computer speakers with a subwoofer.  The recorder was put on a dining room chair maybe 20-25 feet away from the speakers.

Drum machines aren't my thing, but I tried to keep the program semi-interesting when on repeat, and for me that has to include a bit of silence in there.

Using the browser 808 clone at html5drummachine.com I activated each beat on the kick set at 239bpm (the fastest available for this browser drum machine). I did this in my Firefox browser and in my Chrome browser. Both played at once producing phase effects. Toward the end minor adjustments were made to the pitch of the kick in Firefox, causing the HTML5 audio for the Firefox version to crash, so you can only hear the Chrome version at the end.

Created on html5drummachine with no post editing. This song is the feeling of exploring a strange house in a dream. The dials are a bit tricky to run with a mouse so please excuse the bad transitions and the abrupt end.

After experimenting for a while and tuning all the drums and setting the tempo very low (27bpm) for longer parts, I created an A and B pattern with kick/snare/open. I then created two contrasting schemes on perc1/perc2 and high/mid/low for each pattern. Live mixing consisted of trying for a crash on the start of sections, plus adjusting volumes. Volumes for each scheme were adjusted together, so either the perc1/perc2 was running or the high/mid/low was running, and I switched between patterns to create contrast.

The name of the track is taken from the automatic name generated by html5drummachine.com. Try out the drum machine; you will like it.

Created with the HTML5 drum machine, individual recordings spliced together with Audacity. Instruments were mostly played at changing high-speed tempos. No audio effects added other than some basic EQ in order for the recording to not hurt your ears.

Scrambled Egg Beater [disquiet0169-html505]

I created the most terrible, ugly, unmusical and least rhythmic drum track you’ve ever heard on my first attempt at using the machine. (You know, ‘what does this button do?’) It sounds like two drum kits fighting while falling down stairs. So I decided to use it. You can hear it in the background of this, heavily reverbed and delayed.

I processed the track using ambient V.3 into one of my semi-industrial soundscapes, cut it in half and overlaid the two resulting tracks.

I snipped a tiny (random) beat out of the original track and cloned it into the hopping rhythm that develops behind this (double tracked and down-pitched an octave from about half way in).

Make a track using only an HTML5 drum machine.

Planning/Composing/Recording
- I made a few different tracks with this and settled on this one.
- I was trying to emulate the classic drum solo you would hear from a bar band. Starts with a groove, throwing in different bits along the way and then ends up with  a lot of triplets. A dime a dozen;) But, you know the drummer wanted his moment in the spot light.
- I used the Acoustic Drum Kit
- Made an A pattern and a B pattern.
- Started with A then went to B, then quickly bounced between A and B for about the first half.
- Initial Tempo was 110bpm.
- For the latter part I quickly switched the temp from 110 to max and back. First on pattern A and then on Pattern B.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
