'Network Event: A Cyberfungal Romance

This transplanetary emission comes to us from a far-away solar system, where a medium-sized moon harbors a cool, damp, lonely atmosphere. Long ago, people lived here. They cultivated the moon’s natural reserves of rare metals, developing intricate technologies, including self-sustaining machines that drew power from the strong winds that blow day and night. Those people died long ago, but their tech – and the artificial intelligence it housed – was resilient. Now, the moon is experiencing a bloom in a particular kind of fungus, which has an undeniable attraction to the disused technologies. These fungal networks creep into the hardware, finding the AI in a state of complete glitch. 


Through a mysterious communion of electrical signals, the fungi begin to talk to the tech. At first it is met with hostility, and perceived as a virus. But as time goes on, the net begins to respond with newfound coherence. The two sides argue, clash, and make up over and over again. The fungi, growing lushly amongst the warm circuit boards, begin to develop empathy for the AI. The AI realizes that, for the first time, it has a companion who can understand its essence – something its creators were never able to do – because both are rhizomatic at heart. They both know that anarchy and chaos are not the same thing. And so, in a tangle of wires and mycelia, the networks thrive as they merge. Harmony balances in equal parts with dissonance. This is a love story.'
