Third Place w/ DJML - February 2023

aka-Sol (@acaciabaila) is an Ecuadorian DJ, producer, and multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. Through their Acacia Baila label, they're also a connector: they've released their own tracks and collaborations alongside releases from their friends and community, as well as thrown events at spaces like Mansions and their involvement in the Dripping event series and festival. As a DJ, their sets are genre-defying and psychedelic, bridging the gap between heady, trippy sounds and groove and percussion that go straight to the body. Their mix for us is deftly controlled chaos — a fresh, freaky take on 'fast' that's as floating and expansive as it is frenetic.

"I wanted to create a mix exploring the 150-160 bpm pocket. I feel like I have only landed in playing around these tempos a few times while DJing live, and had definitely not recorded a mix up there before. I was itching to submerge into it after a crucial year in my DJ career, where I have widely expanded the limitations of the things I feel comfortable playing.

It’s been refreshing to understand more and more that I am not an artist/DJ that could be defined by a music genre, but rather by the sensibility in which I lace the different styles and sounds I use to create narratives when constructing my sets. Another important challenge I presented to myself for recording this mix was the curiosity of understanding what kind of tunes I would select and blend for this as a non DnB nor hard techno DJ. I feel like by going through this challenge, I have opened a world of possibilities that I can’t wait to incorporate when playing out there.

In terms of feelings explored, I would say that expansiveness of the body and the mind are a recurrent element in my practice and it was very present in this mix too. I wanted to build something that could feel both complex yet fluid. Entering into deeper introspections while feeling your body being pulled in all possible directions at once until the point of surrendering into a floating state of slow movements is the only possible solution to cope with the amount of information being received.

In terms of gear, I used 2 Pioneer XDJ-700s and a Pioneer DJM 450 mixer. For the recording I use a Zoom H6 recorder."

"Here at Distant Signals Laboratories, we are excited to present our recent discovery of an exoplanet with quite unusual gravitational properties. Lead scientist on the project, boxofbox, has obtained a gravimetric recording for analysis and reports their findings below:

In March 2023, our Advanced LIGO detectors were able to hear a planetoid body in the star system Phustrus, 2.7 Gpc, Earth relative. The planetoid, hereafter deemed Aephus.5722.27a appears to be near the Roche limit with its star and the system also possesses a rapid, secondary, 0.5-hourly orbit around a nearby black hole, NGX-HL 3777. Over time this binary system has apparently forced the planetoid’s bulk into a bi-lobular conical form (confirmed by Vortex coronagraph), the most directly measurable consequence of which is that Aephus.5722.27a possesses multiple meta-stable gravitational norms. We hypothesize from the obtained recording that the beings of Aephus are attuned to this multiples-of-gravity effect as evidenced by the musical artifact extracted from the LIGO recording, as this “music” appears to express simultaneous, approximately integer-multiple, polyrhythmic tempos (61.1±10g, 90±5.2g, & 180±12.7g are the three most significant and consistently detectable of these quasi-static gravities) .

There appears to be some periodic (perhaps anxious) temporal dissonances (we’ve termed this ‘almost-clangs’) indicated by moments where the metastable time slips, degrades, and recalibration occurs in the recording. We hypothesize that this has to do with the difficulty in maintaining a planet-wide clock and rhythm synchronization with the relativistic effects. Alternatively, this could be a result of large scale gravitational fluctuations due to changes in angular momentum given the measured axial precession wobble.


During rare moments in its dual orbit, Aephus.5722.27a is at apogee with both NGX-HL 3777 and Phustrus; here we calculate an overall period of planetary “weightlessness” as the gravity goes below detectable levels during these periods. This has been difficult for us to precisely measure as it nearly always coincides with an Earth-NGX/Aephus syzygy, introducing significant gravitational distortional that temporarily blocks our detector. Yet finally, we are fortunate with this latest recording, as we were able to capture the onset of one of these events; the sudden breakdown of any discernible temporal consistency near the end of the recording seems to correspond to this event. A list of all our extracted measurements is provided in the tracklist appendix."

boxofbox is an artist/scientist/engineer working on bioelectrical systems, adaptive signal processing, and the fundamental physics of rump-shaking. A long-time giver to the US underground rave scene as a dancer and afterparty DJ, they are known for their genre-slippy, psychedelic, qu-ear'd sonics, and a passion for longish sets. They can frequently be found in the form of a tender and weird light in chatty internet corners or as a sweat-drenched, grinning pumpkin, smack dab in the middle of the closest dancefloor.

Dreams of Toraja is an atmospheric release composed of collected sound recordings from Tana Toraja (Sulawesi, Indonesia), live instruments and futuristic soundscapes. It is not an album built from a concept conceived beforehand, but a flow of expression where sound led the way and meaning revealed itself after. In this way, it is a deep dive into the subconscious.

Memory, dreams, death, ritual, ancestral symbols - flows the music not as distant echoes but as living patterns shaping creation. The stream carries you, shaping perception, memory, and the whole itself. Creating Dreams of Toraja is an act of synchronizing with that current. All in all, as it opens a portal where memory, dreams, and ritual align and guide towards death, it is an invitation from sound itself to shed the old skin and reveal the endless life force of creation - where symbols of the ancestral flow emerge naturally, weaving sacred harmony to find ourselves in the now, between the ancient memory & future vision.
