"Here at Distant Signals Laboratories, we are excited to present our recent discovery of an exoplanet with quite unusual gravitational properties. Lead scientist on the project, boxofbox, has obtained a gravimetric recording for analysis and reports their findings below:

In March 2023, our Advanced LIGO detectors were able to hear a planetoid body in the star system Phustrus, 2.7 Gpc, Earth relative. The planetoid, hereafter deemed Aephus.5722.27a appears to be near the Roche limit with its star and the system also possesses a rapid, secondary, 0.5-hourly orbit around a nearby black hole, NGX-HL 3777. Over time this binary system has apparently forced the planetoid’s bulk into a bi-lobular conical form (confirmed by Vortex coronagraph), the most directly measurable consequence of which is that Aephus.5722.27a possesses multiple meta-stable gravitational norms. We hypothesize from the obtained recording that the beings of Aephus are attuned to this multiples-of-gravity effect as evidenced by the musical artifact extracted from the LIGO recording, as this “music” appears to express simultaneous, approximately integer-multiple, polyrhythmic tempos (61.1±10g, 90±5.2g, & 180±12.7g are the three most significant and consistently detectable of these quasi-static gravities) .

There appears to be some periodic (perhaps anxious) temporal dissonances (we’ve termed this ‘almost-clangs’) indicated by moments where the metastable time slips, degrades, and recalibration occurs in the recording. We hypothesize that this has to do with the difficulty in maintaining a planet-wide clock and rhythm synchronization with the relativistic effects. Alternatively, this could be a result of large scale gravitational fluctuations due to changes in angular momentum given the measured axial precession wobble.


During rare moments in its dual orbit, Aephus.5722.27a is at apogee with both NGX-HL 3777 and Phustrus; here we calculate an overall period of planetary “weightlessness” as the gravity goes below detectable levels during these periods. This has been difficult for us to precisely measure as it nearly always coincides with an Earth-NGX/Aephus syzygy, introducing significant gravitational distortional that temporarily blocks our detector. Yet finally, we are fortunate with this latest recording, as we were able to capture the onset of one of these events; the sudden breakdown of any discernible temporal consistency near the end of the recording seems to correspond to this event. A list of all our extracted measurements is provided in the tracklist appendix."

"Serhat’s work has long been characterized by what it  rejects: global biennials that turn artists and their work  into emblems of the exotic; the promotion of tourism that  does the same to a country’s citizens; the establishment  of economic bonds between nations by and for their elites, under the guise of what he calls “dialogue fetishism.” Beğenal, a program of concerts, video screenings, performances, and political theatrics shadowing Istanbul Biennial, is the latest project to take up these criticisms. Pronounced almost like “biennial,”  beğenal is Turkish for “if you like it, buy it”; the project’s  logo is a man-as-red-star caricature vomiting up various  corporate-style logos, responding to the biennial’s slogan — courtesy of Brecht: “What Keeps Mankind Alive?” — with “This Is How Mankind Pukes!” But Serhat  is no mere refusenik. For the last year, he has been spearheading the International Roaming Biennial of Tehran, a nomadic exhibition of work that has traveled to Berlin, Istanbul, and Belgrade .. The biennial’s inaugural theme is Urban Jealousy. During a trip to Tehran in 2001, while he was working on the soundtrack to a documentary called Tehran”

For the 119th entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome @boxofbox!  I think many would agree that Jonathon is one of the sweetest and most supportive people in the scene. On top of being a wonderful human being, he's always an extremely talented DJ. 

Before our scheduled programing, @boxofbox has a few words to say about his mix and some lost Honcho tea:

'Fresh off the 10th Anniversary of Honcho @ Hot Mass, we are finally beyond the statute of limitations and can share with you the real story. Honcho’s origins actually harken back 20 years ago, when a then fresh-faced Michael Moraine assembled a specialized crew of ne’er do wells to execute a simultaneously coordinated heist of 7 distinct gambling venues across the US. The Honch, as they were known back then, have been on the run for the past 20 years, but now are able to tell their story. Michael, a.k.a. Don Sweetums, led the operation, running point from his swank Pittsburgh riverside cabana. The primary team included, Aaron “The Disaster” Clark, the munitions expert, George “Fun Cooker” d’Adhemar, the reputable bag man, and Clark “Sugar Caddy” Price, the wheels. The boys hired a novice hacker, known only as boxofbox to run comms. The mix you are listening to was the operation-coordinating soundtrack box played during the heist. A number of additional accomplices have asked to remain anonymous, but you can likely find them on the Hot Mass dancefloor as part of their mandated community service.

This mix is dedicated to the long lost 5th member of the Honcho crew, who during reconnaissance at the Orleans casino, fell into the alligator tank. RIP Jo Crystal.'

Somersault 297 (boxofbox b2b Nick Boyd) "Open the Boydbox! Close the Boydbox!"

box (@boxofbox) is one of the dearest friends we’ve made in this dance music thing. A seemingly eternal well of kindness and intention, the legend of boxofbox is slowly spreading far and wide. To know them is to love them and to hear them play is a gift (always). When I first heard box would be playing @hot-mass for the first time for Pittsburgh’s fantastic Transit party, I almost cried…. before immediately began making a plan to get to Pittsburgh cause I wouldn’t miss it for the world. 

The reality of that night far outweighed my high expectations. Making their way through the world’s longest playlist, box sloshed an enthusiastic crowd of friends and strangers, human dancers and prancing pups alike through their expansive musical soup that touched on so many much loved musical traditions and diverse dancefloor sounds that we hold so dear. I won’t spoil the ending but I’ll never forget hearing those last few tracks and then emerging from Hot Mass to discover the outside world blanketed in a still, untouched fresh layer of snow that had neatly fallen while we were sweating it out inside.

This recording is a pleasure and we’re so happy to share it with y’all.

Hot Mass might be my favorite dancefloor. The friendships that have flowed from/through there are some of my most cherished, and this set in many ways was a love letter to all those folks.

It was my first time playing on the system (if you don't count a mini set of trance bangers to annoy Aaron Clark during a Humanaut party setup). I came in with flexible open format intentions – I have seen the full gamut of DJs play there for some of the most up-for-anything crowds you could hope for, and I wanted to meet that dynamism full-on.

A couple selected track notes:

There are a couple "ambient" washes, which I love doing when I can get away with it. The tiger snoring specifically is something I've wanted to try inspired by Plaslaiko closing Panorama Bar, where mid-set he spontaneously blended into a pitched down loop tool that made it sound like pulsating/purring. He let it sit for at least a full minute while he ducked down to re-up some vitamins before knocking back into something breaky. Truly a floor-melting moment for me; hopefully I melted a few heads in return.

I threw on a block of tearful tracks for the landing. Spring's "No Time (for crying)" in particular was a must play for me; I listened to it almost every day during covid lockdown, and I wanted to forever link it to one of the spaces (as Not Mass) that brought me consistent solace during that hellish era. The last three tracks were inspired by seeing the faces of loved ones left on the dancefloor and wanting to give them something for a good happy cry.

“Recently, I’ve been really inspired by bass music in the 80-85 (or 160-70) BPM range that shifts between slow and fast registers, opening up space for a deep interior journey and for a driving, percussive dancefloor experience alike. Much music in this space that I’m drawn to has a visceral, haptic, and earthy quality -- body music for mental landscapes. 

The mix is conceived as a journey into a densely foliated forest of ever-shifting dimensions, drawing you deeper and deeper into its cavernous shadows and spectral pockets of light. Dewdrops shiver on pillowy moss ,flanked by the hungry mouths of carnivorous plants; burly vines dangle low and heavy under velvet leaves.
