Experimental Housewife, @experimental-housewife, known to many as Exhouse, is a DJ, producer, percussionist, professor, label owner and community builder who has steadily forged roots within the dance music community for over twenty years, passionately riding the momentum since her beginnings in the 90s rave scene. Exhouse has developed the versatile technical stylings that have become signature of her DJ sets and live hardware performances, all the while championing the local and underground by connecting and uplifting those around her through parties and her Perfect Location imprint. Her releases have appeared on SF's Jacktone, True Indigo, Schmer, and Chicago's Identity Spectrum Records among others.

This current edition we are honored to welcome Exhouse, tenderly conducting with exacting precision into a haze filled dream state that swirls in between ambient melodic chambers and cavernous declines of basement dub techno resonance with uplifting bursts of blissful fantasy 90s warehouse memories. Definitely give her a listen (whether its the productions or mixes) for some amazing dreamy/surrealist electronic (always capturing an extraterrestrial analogue rich sound) whether dance floor orientated or ambient/downbeat. 
I highly recommend her Album 'D i g i t a l B e a c h' as I've milked those tracks to the fullest throughout my own mixes.

Ransom Note’s new label Dance Music From Planet Earth have just released ‘Richard Sen presents Dream The Dream: UK Techno, House and Breakbeat 1990-1994’. The British Indian DJ/producer/record collector is a music dance music veteran with a proper heavyweight CV, whose Zelig like history goes even further back. Speaking on his Bleep mix, Richard explains: “All the tracks that I chose for this mix are from 1988 - 1995. I tried to choose tracks that were musical, deep, druggy and still rough around the edges. This is a snapshot of the kind of music I was playing back then - a personal selection of some of my faves. I'd like to think that they all stand the test of time and I still play some of them out now.”

"This mix is a live recording from a recent visit to Podlasie in Chicago. When I gig, I think less about how I’m supposed to sound and focus on recalling, reconnecting with, and sharing music I love. As such there’s a ton of old favorites in the mix that span eras, genres, and moods. It is a capture of old favorites meeting new favorites. This ambassadorial practice of compiling new and old is a symbolic act of finding a sense of familiarity within unfamiliarity. It creates a level of genuineness that is vital for world building and sonic transportation while being resistant to consumption, possession, and escape. It highlights how one can encounter a new world without leaving this planet. Worlds are made of context and exchange; planets are made of matter, gas, and gravity."

ExHouse aka Experimental Housewife is a Bay Area-based DJ and live performer of 25 years. Over the last 10 years, she has become an icon of deep commitment to electronic sound and the art of storytelling. Deemed a "pillar of the underground" by RA, ExHouse started out as a teen raver, obsessed with the sound and attitude of the electronica of the 90s, before being drawn to ambient and post-rock in the early 00s, from which she takes much technical and aesthetic influence. Today she brings diverse cataloging and fluid turntable savvy to the dance floor, causing holes to appear in people's shoes while making "it look so easy". With an ear for contemplative bangers, deep grooves, and heavy drone, ExHouse has released original dance and ambient works on Jacktone, Schmer, True Indigo, Identity Spectrum Records and more. She owns and operates Perfect Location Records, a highly curated cross-medial label geared toward the greater distribution of honest and independent electronic music. "Beneath the cold and iced ledges inside a cavernous cutout through the mountain, an eternal flame blazes and heats the air. The heat circulates the cave. A nearby river splashes into the cave, periodically hitting its flame, never enough to put it out, but just so that it conducts a great steam. A deep reddish hue glows from the flames, blurred with the steam, its bright halo spills out of the cave. 

Beings across the starscape know about this spot. They fly, swim, teleport and dance into it. The sounds of their movements, murmurings and exhales become one with the cycle of heat ensnaring the space.

A large stick brought into the cave by wind strikes the wall, which carries the vibrations and sounds of the heat, pressure, cold waves, and steam cycling. Its sound reverberates from the atoms of the heat and echoes on the walls of the cave. The sound carries across the cold water channel, outward into the depths of the unknown.

Listening through a seashell on the other end of the ocean, is a being playing in the sound, called to hold up the shell to their ear and hear how it was forged. The creatures of the ocean swim through certain sections of the water, where they know the transmission will be reverberant. Like swimming through radio signals, the path from the cave is well traveled.

You are now traveling through the water’s transmission carrying the sound."

Malzof is a DJ and Intermedia Artist based in Pittsburgh, USA and a resident of Sweet Abyss. Malzof plays abstracted grooves- weaving together melodies and rhythms across genre, BPM and era into sonic journeys. Spanning ambient, experimental, broken beat and multiple genres of house, techno and beyond, their sets enchant the dance floor with blissed out beats, fun and freaky vocals, psychedelic percussions and environmental sounds.

With a creative background in video production, live visuals and installation art since the late 2000s, Malzof has taken inspiration from their live performance style to inform the ways in which they DJ, make music and engage with the audience. Across mediums, they are inspired by the synesthetic connection between seeing, hearing and feeling; natural and industrial elements; and exploring community histories of liberation and joy.

Evelyn Malinowski (fka Experimental Housewife), a Bay Area underground legend and founder of Perfect Location Records now known as exhouse, graces our "Delayed With..." series with a truly unique mix.

Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement. 
 
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
 
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
 
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over  these years! All the best for the future!

Floating Points & Four Tet - Final Plastic People 2 1 2015

Anglo Year: 2178

This earth year began as Duke Barron Dumbarton II (DBDII as he prefers) transmitted his spirit and mind into another WWE Champion Wrestler thereby prolonging his rule another 60 years. His most pressing earth challenge remained his search for potable water for the manicured lawns of his relatives. 

He commissioned a spacecraft hastily titled "Sergeant Arthur MacBadass" for the regrettably named "Doritos' Cool Ranch Cool Space Mission Sweepstakes IV".  By design, the craft could travel to numerous galaxies, but poor navigation and the in-flight conflicts generated by DBDII for his amusement hindered any measurable progress. The craft was thereby confined to traveling among the moons of Jupiter. Ganymede in the Jovian system was encrusted with wudder/ice, rendering it impenetrable, and no craft dared enter Europa after DBDII's physical altercation with the Intercontinental Planetary Naming Convention (IPNC). The IPNC took particular exception to renaming all known Milky Way Galaxy moons after DBDII's favorite luncheon meats and cheese spreads. 

DBDII also despised the word Europa because the Earth Zone of the same name had been long overtaken by African super scientists. These superior minds harmonized sound waves to dramatically increase technological development in the now dominant global South. New Ghana's space program alone colonized entire galaxies with her peaceful inhabitants and sublime Sly and Robbie recordings broadcasted among the stars and planets. Ultimately, "Europa" was one of many multisyllabic words forbidden in DBDII's presence.

I digress. Badass was left to search either Io or Callisto due to a bitter dispute from the two Blackrock executive's daughters on board, Braighlynne and McKennah. The transmission features so many biting, pressurized snares attempting to shield the bickering, no speech from the craft was quite audible. Callisto's atmosphere also distorted the communique with its pulsating sound waves ever which increased in frequency as the crew sat prone playing Valorant hurtling toward the moon's core. The scientists originally charged to decipher the cacaphonous mess were unmotivated because, after 17 terms of inbreeding and corruption, DBDII's only available currency was illusory promises of back rubs written on cocktail napkins. 

While "Doritos' Cool Ranch Cool Space Mission Sweepstakes IV '' will become DBDII's greatest success in 120 years in office, only 40 gallons of water were able to reach Earth. Actually, these 40 gallons mostly evaporated upon reentry into the atmosphere. DBDII was no less delighted that the lawns of his progeny could be gently moistened for about 6 afternoons. 

So the only remnant of the mission is the mix you hear today. Are the changes reflective of heavy wind patterns or McKennah's violent instrument operation? Are the squelches from Callisto's many HAM radio hobbyists? Do the metallic sounds symbolize dialog with the wise Callistonians or the dying screams of the Badass occupants? Do the final 5 minutes of the recording indicate the onboard computer's joyous discovery of perfect lawn care H2O deep within the planet? 

It is left to the discerning Distant Signal ears for interpretation.”

Associate is a sentient being located in the USandA capital, Washington, DC. He can be seen in his verdant neighborhood, brooding about with headphones, probably greeting a dog and scowling at its hooman. Musically, he is a polymath. Raised on WGPR, WJLB, 89X, WJZZ, WDET, and Electrifying Mojo, he really has no music core at this point. Groove, weird, swing, and sometimes minimalism are a feature but not a trait. He hosts parties as Midwest Plenty once he has saved enough disposable income set ablaze on luxury items for his treasured guests. Additionally, he plays party music with the group Midnight FM. Well, if you consider Joy Division party music, that is what he plays.

Distant Signals 060: Associate

"Drifting through the endless void, I find solace in the quiet chaos of time and space folding in on itself. My spacecraft Paradox glitches constantly, sending me hurtling through centuries and galaxies at random, but I’m honestly into it. Each jump brings me to new moments in time, and each encounter with objects feels like a fleeting ripple in an infinite ocean. I've met sentient beings, sharing brief moments with them, then always leave, watching their timelines fade into the distance as Paradox carries me to another era. Timelessness has become my constant companion, offering me a peace that no anchored reality ever could. 

Right now, I’m reflecting on a stunning exoplanet I just briefly visited. Like on many places with existing life, the beings there seemed to be in synchronized movement to a rhythm coming from the planet’s core, being piped in from a network of presumably other nearby planets, communicating like the trees from that one planet that ate itself. To my surprise, I suddenly had a deep craving to be in sync with them, but their shared rhythm was floating in and out for me like it was occasionally being smothered by a soft pillow. And sometimes it would echo all around me, ringing out of sync with their communal timing - but I moved to it nonetheless. The other beings didn’t seem to mind that I was out of sync, and we all moved together, as I embodied this lonely echo in my temporary quest for connection. As I left a bit later, floating on toward wherever I was headed next, I tapped into my own familiar inner rhythm, untethered and on the loose."

PlayPlay combines their penchant for percussion and bass with nostalgic samples & dreamy synths in both their DJ sets & music production. Their sound is inspired by years of clubbing, crate digging and the sounds they grew up dancing to - 90s club anthems, jungle, breakbeat hardcore, minimal wave, classic house and old school hip-hop. With releases out on labels such as Sorry Records, Clasico and Worst Behavior, as well as a slew of self-releases and collaborations, PlayPlay has been slowly and steadily amassing a thumping discography over the years.

Based in NYC, PlayPlay currently hosts two parties: Breaking Capacity, dedicated to all things breaks, and Satisfaction of What’s to Come, celebrating the many iterations of house music. In their home state of NC, they co-host PARADOX, a party exploring the timelessness of early rave music.

“Geologist’s Erotic Log, Stardate 6969:

A lithophile—if literal and not biological or geochemical—is a lover of rocks as opposed to a scholar of them. I was shocked to find mineral sentience on a planet that had been mined for centuries. I wonder how many were lost to our ignorance.

They made themselves known while I was surveying a new shaft, a desirous, violent penetration. It was a delicate return of touch, skin against stone; my fragility tantalizingly clarified by their solidity. Although I pulled away, nearly ran away, I was rapt. A vibratory intensity held me, invited me deeper into their earth-dark interior with fingers traced along a precious fault line. In absent sight, I became haptic expanse, relishing my tongue against water-polished smooth and bloody, igneous scrape on inner thighs. They were pleasured too, I both flesh stalagmite and cavern. I came, a quiver; they came, a quake. As quickly they were gone into the indurate expanse at which I could only chip away. Perhaps a taste of our own medicine.”

i found it in the springtime under a shower of pink blossoms
my spirit, an ooze seeping out onto the floor
in this state of sub-being, words passed through untethered—
unintelligible, and touch was void

the device sent rippling waves through the air,
arranging it into mutating forms
they traveled inward and rebounded, inverting inside and out
wisps of feeling newly embodied pushed boldly from every pore

i watched as the shapes of people grew unimaginably
the glimmering swells were interspersed with pearls
which gradually came loose and fell
unlocked, my innermost madness unfurled into a spiraled conch

as the day darkened, the sounds became grim and hoarse
emotions scraped against each other with serrated edges
disintegrating madness into a fine lunar silt
voices came flooding, and in unison whispered: trust"

“Recently, I’ve been really inspired by bass music in the 80-85 (or 160-70) BPM range that shifts between slow and fast registers, opening up space for a deep interior journey and for a driving, percussive dancefloor experience alike. Much music in this space that I’m drawn to has a visceral, haptic, and earthy quality -- body music for mental landscapes. 

The mix is conceived as a journey into a densely foliated forest of ever-shifting dimensions, drawing you deeper and deeper into its cavernous shadows and spectral pockets of light. Dewdrops shiver on pillowy moss ,flanked by the hungry mouths of carnivorous plants; burly vines dangle low and heavy under velvet leaves. Mysterious and heretofore unknown flora abound, beguiling you with their sensuous textures, suffusing the humid air with smells both luxuriant and noxious. Finally you emerge into a softly-hued meadow, your journey into the darkness having brought you closer to a sense of calm.”

For our 11th mix release - nearly a year into the Walking and Falling series - we have a very special contribution from SF-based artist @experimental-housewife.  Deep and dance-worthy, this mix -- excerpted from a 4 hour vinyl set recorded live in Seattle last year -- showcases ExHouse's talent, technical ability and range as a selector, as it weaves together soulful house and hypnotic techno cuts with grace. 

Over the last twenty years, Experimental Housewife has served as an untypical and often unforgettable sonic experience. She is lauded for weaving together beautiful, deep cuts with psychedelic, left-field techno while holding seamless, long matches. She’s toured around the Atlantic, having played destinations such as Montréal, Seattle, Philadelphia, Copenhagen, Belgrade, and her once-home of Berlin. She has released music on Jacktone Records as well as various international labels, including ANTIME and Schmer. Currently, ExHouse runs Perfect Location Records and is active in San Francisco as a co-manager of Run The Length Of Your Wildness, a fixture for adventurous dance music enthusiasts founded by her close friend Chelsea Faith aka Cherushii (RIP).
