For our 3rd installement of our new mix series The Lock-In, we welcome Ibiza's Sonet Music head honcho James Reid, for a hour of pumping glitchy and deep minimal signature of their label to keep you moving through lockdown! Better yet its a all vinyl affair! Turn it up and lock in!

Sonet Music is a new vinyl only label which sets out with the goal of putting forward captivating underground music from the deeper end of the electronic music spectrum. The label is strongly influenced by the minimal dubby hypnotic minimal sounds of Romania and France. The initial releases have been from Romania`s Gruia for Sonet 01 and more recently 02 from Olivier Romero. Their next releases are Sonet 03 coming out in June from Ciprian Stan and 04 will be from Rares Romanov be out in September.

For the first in our new mix series, we happily welcome one of our most recent guests! @djulz (bass culture records) back after a incredible set at the bar last month for Compound, for a sublime hour of hip-shaking groovers than span across a multitude of genres with a groove and flow that is completely Rockin!

Now there are DJs, and then there are DJ’s DJ’s. Julien Veniel, artist name D’Julz, is undoubtedly one of the latter – a true craftsman behind the decks whose true strongest skill is his ability to go beyond mere genres and trends.

Through a career spanning two and half decades, D’Julz has practically done it all. He began spinning in Paris, often playing his home city’s much-talked about early 90’s raves and legendary clubs, all before moving to New–York in 1993 to further hone his skills and cement his reputation as a true taste-maker in his field. The rest, as they say, is history.

Despite finding himself in high demand in every corner of the globe, from the States to Japan and countless countries in between, D’Julz has always remained true to his roots in Paris, where he has been running the now legendary “Bass Culture” night at Rex club since 1997. A true legend and one who will continue to be at the top of his game.

These guys have been killing it around Leeds with a real style that goes through both there look and sound, and we're meant to be making their distrikt debut for us this month. Although the party can't go ahead, in the meantime heres a solid hour mix that whips through, italo, 80s, afro, disco and more.

Next up we welcome a hour of pounding techno from Joy Techno's most frequent guest and a seasoned veteran in dance music whos name wouldnt go a miss, Mike Humphries. 

Mike has been producing techno since the early nineties, and his first productions were co-written, under the name of D. Kontrol. They were released on the Belgium labels, 2 Thumbs, Mineral and Growth, the in-house labels of Frank De Wulf, Since then, remixes have been created for Glenn Wilson on Planet Rhythm, Heroes, Aphrohead (aka Felix Da House Cat) on Bush Records (Area 51 mix), Thomas Krome’s Bitches from Hell on Corb (Cold Dust mix). Mike has concentrated more on producing tracks for his own labels. Punish, the sleazy sounds of Techno, Together with co-founder Glenn Wilson, Punish was the start of a new sound in techno.

With the label Red Seal, recording under the name H, he brought you the World Downfall series (big hitters on the Fuse presents series for Dave Clarke), 2 Thieves and was responsible for live PAs as Cold Dust with Nuccle. He started Black and White records, co-ran Player Records, the in-house label of the Orbit UK (R.I.P.) bringing anonymous releases to the Player label that were also remixed by DJ Bam Bam, DJ Urban and Angel Alanis, as well as artists such as Joey Beltram, Adam Beyer, Marco Bailey and Mark Broom, Ben Simms on the Player Remixes label.

Mike left all of these projects behind him at the end of 2003 to make way for his most recent project, Mastertraxx, which began in 2004. Mike has DJ-ed and played live sets in clubs all around the world, and currently plays for Joy Techno Sessions.

For our second Distrikt Podcast we welcome the exceptional selector @markfarina(mushroom jazz / great lake audio recordings) for a hour and half of his signature blend of house!

Since 1989, Mark Farina has been traveling the globe performing at literally hundreds of shows a year, sometimes DJing both of his preferred styles in two different rooms at the same party. At other events, he's been known to play extended sets that lasted over eight hours. In his House sets, Mark is known for his uniquely effortless journeys on the jazzy side of Chicago House, mixed up San Fran style.

This wandering record minstrel has played to incredible crowds all over the globe. Consistently drawing new fans to his style of chunky-funky rhythms and deep underground house, Mark plays upwards of 200 shows to over one million (1,000,000) club goers per year. Voted in the top 20 DJ's in the world by MUZIK and BPM Magazine, his taste making skills continue to turn the heads of seasoned veterans as well as youngsters just getting into the music.

On CD, Mark has recorded both of his dominant musical personalities. His first mix, 'Mushroom Jazz' on Om Records, is defined by a hip-hop sub-groove with jazzy, dubby elements in the downtempo range. It was followed by 'Seasons', a critically acclaimed House mix. An Imperial Dub mixed CD, a guest slot in the pedigreed 'United DJs of America' series, 'Mushroom Jazz 2' (Om Records) and 'San Francisco Sessions, Vol. I' (Om Records) and Mushroom Jazz 3 (Om Records) to round out the Farina catalog. His past release "Connect" walks the line of San Francisco deeper and the bumpin' funky house sound of Chicago. Now, in November of 2002, Mark Farina releases his much beloved fourth volume of Mushroom Jazz.

Episode 26 of the Lock is a tech infused bouncy mix from Italian native and .WAV head Alessandro Martini. After moving to New Zealand, Alessandro became a Resident DJ at the NZ renowned event Electric Rush, supporting artists such as Solardo, Weiss UK, Max Chapman and Dennis Cruz. He later moved to Leeds to pursue music, joining forces with Sam Pratt to push there own midweek night .WAV at Distrikt, promoting local up and coming DJs and played at venues such as mint warehouse.

Martini has expresses his passion for Techno and House music through energetic and driven DJ sets and productions with a sound influenced by Leeds underground minimal music scene and the infectious sounds of Michael Bibi and wAFF. A sound represented  by a solid low end, pitch shift delays, a swung groove and the use of outlandish vocal samples.

Podcast 005 is a very special one indeed. One of Distrikt's founding fathers and local legend, Stuart Forsyth aka Foz steps up for a massive mix. Foz was an integral part when Distrikt birthed 10 years ago and paved a solid foundation to what we have reached today. Now 10 years on he is the man behind the infamous MiNT club, warehouse & festival as well as an everything to do with Cocoon In The Park & Temple Newsham Festival while also selling out venues with his own Dirty Disco party which has been running for over 15 years in the city. Distrikt Podcast 005: Foz (Dirty Disco, Mint)

Stepping in for our 6th Distirkt podcast we welcome @terence-terry
head honcho of @lvrose (La Vie En Rose) & @user-696855184 (Epice Magique Rec). Recently also setting up his own agency Presence Booking to help push forward a new wave of artists such as Stephan Bazbaz, Mari.te ,Jonny N’Travis ,Vincent Giumelli ,Robert Plankett ,Fabien Geniero.

As a teenager Terence :Terry: spent much of his time hanging out in the first raves to be held in Paris, in a warehouse on the outskirts of the city. There, he discovered a menagerie of dance genres and he quickly developed a passion for diverse sounds that would inspire him to take to the decks, and influence him throughout the rest of his music career. Feeding his desire for original, rare cuts, Terence became a fixture at Paris’ famous flea-market Puces of Clignancourt, dealing in second-hand warehouse vinyl he found on trips to London. But, always on the hunt something new to excite him, he would often sneak away from his shop in search of jazz, soul, hip-hop and funk records to expand his ever-growing music collection.

Steadily building his name as a DJ/producer on the underground scene in Paris, Terence secured a number of residencies including ‘Afterparty Is Not A Crime’ at Nouveau Casino, one of the most hyped after parties around in 2003/4, and later in 2009, ‘Oui Now’ at Djoon where he hosted alongside the likes of Tania Vulcano, Seth Troxler and Clive Henry. His close alliance with the famous Freak n’Chic label saw him spinning at the Batofar and Rex Club whilst, further afield, his DJing took him from DC10 Ibiza, to Panoramabar and Watergate in Berlin, Goa Madrid and Fabric London.

Branching out and wanting to immerse himself in a new scene, Terence moved away from Paris for a few wild years in London, where he was embraced by the city’s underground and regularly appeared at seminal parties such as T-bar, Kubicle and Mulletover. This was not only a crucial time for Terence himself but also for the London scene, giving rise to a new generation of artists who have helped shape the progression of the city’s electronic music scene since the mid-2000s up to now. Being involved in such a fertile movement had a huge influence on Terence’s outlook, inspiring him to return to Paris with a fresh new take on his career.

In 2012, Terence felt it was time to launch his own label La Vie En Rose, quite simply to have a platform to develop and release a sound that could encompass a whole range of genres, taking influence from his very first experiences in the Paris rave scene. Since its inception La Vie En Rose has been responsible for several ubiquitous releases, including the killer ‘Living Lies’ by John Dimas, ‘Distraction Way’ by Terence and Hanfry Martinez (which included Dyed Soundorom’s exquisite remix of ‘Sunday Gathering’), Carlos Sanchez with ‘Timeless’ (including New York legend Jovonn on remix duties) and Terence and Hanfry’s second superlative link up, ‘Cornelius Is Gaye’. The label continues to maintain a high level of musical output, representing the very best in avant-garde sounds from a selection of young talents from around Europe.

Our latest mix comes from The Moretti Club's Gina Moretti. 

From Dubai to Leeds, Gina first started out DJing when she lived in the UAE, setting up her own boat parties in Dubai, with further residencies and guest radio slots following. Following her return to Leeds she set up Club Moretti and has been a firm fixture in Mission's Grim Up North Events with a Room 3 residency alongside parties at 212, A Bar Below, Beaverworks, The Warehouse, Hifi as well as Distrikt.
Her own sound captures a foot-stomping mix of disco edits, full-fat house, funky throwdowns and classic vocals which is projected perfectly in this full hour of feel goodness.

Stepping in for our 7th Podcast we welcome Slapfunk newest recruit William Caycedo into the mix for a dazzling eclectic take on his usual output. 

Music has always been around William starting out b-boying at a young age in the Netherlands. He learned to dj from Mistasweet, an old-school hip-hop/battle DJ from The Hague. He Started raving at 17 and fell in love with house music and the underground scene. His productions influenced by hip-hop -> always looking for a raw feel. Amsterdam was his home base for years and where he started getting notoriety releasing on labels slapfunk, adult only, girasole and brawthers & Tristan Da Cuntha Dungeon meat, combined and with an international touring schedule.

We originally had will down to play at Distrikt this summer till lockdown came into place, so this mix gets us very excited for clubs to return and to be having William Caycedo into the mix in our booth

Distrikt Podcast 007: William Caycedo (Slapfunk)

For our 8th Podcast we welcome @timothyclerkin to the podcast series.

Timothy Clerkin is an Amsterdam based producer, live act & DJ, who has been releasing records, playing live & DJ’ing all over the world since 2010.

After spending a number of years cutting his teeth as one half of international DJ duo the Eskimo Twins, he has been releasing music under various solo names for a number of years now.

With a string of rabidly received EP’s with his birth moniker under his belt, he is now touring his electric & ambitious live show, which has been described as a filthy, extensive journey through clubbing.

2018 saw him launch his own label ‘Insult To Injury’ which, after only a handful of releases, has already been heavily supported by the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Optimo, Vladimir Ivkovic, Ivan Smagghe, Erol Alkan, Lena Willikens & Lovefingers.

This is a pure club mix from the artists stacked full of plenty of dance floor smashers plusing through a eclectic mix of electronic gold, through ambient electro, techno, breakbeat and chock full of acid. Rave on.

Stepping up for the lastest lock-in mix we welcome party and facebook community The Inner Circle who invite resident @dinhterlude to showcase their sound, providing us with an hour of lush UK house amongst other pleasant oddities.

The Inner Circle started by PADDY and REES has been going for just over a year now and has connected people all over the world together with a common interest of electronic music, and have also hosted multiple nights in our home of Distrikt, before lockdown with Tech Support joining them on the last show.

Our partnership with Distrikt Paris runs deep so it was more than right to get them involved in our Mix series. Resident Blanco Comes in with a hot hour of grooves, bouncing house to techno, through breakbeat and electro, Blanco likes to wander between styles, keeping that groove that defines him.

Blanco belongs to this new French scene, passionate, studious and eager to share his eclectic vision of electronic music. In 2015, he first began to evolve as a resident of the Insomnia Rec. collective in Paris. He was then spotted by the Distrikt Paris collective, well known for its underground parties, which he joined in 2016 and now evolves as a resident for this crew, chaining gigs through the biggest clubs and warehouses in the city. One of his main characteristics is the attention he pays to his selection, always fine and varied, allowing him to adapt to any club or situation.

Distrikt Presents The Lock In 39: Fried (Paradise Discs)

Josh Demello stepping up for the latest lock-in mix bringing a power hour and a half showcasing the true Ruckus24 sound. 

Hailing from the Yorkshire's capital of Leeds, Josh Demello started his journey at illegal warehouse raves built around the Acid House sound during the late 90s, he has built himself a name from the beginning. Whether it be promoting parties, showing support for his local scene as a clubber or playing sets, Josh has proven himself to be a worthy player. Starting out with residencies at venues such as Mint Club, The Warehouse, Club Mission in Leeds and later the legendary club Sankeys in Manchester and became the youngest Ministry of Sound Resident at the age of 18 at the brands club in Egypt. Having played alongside some of the world’s biggest names, Demello has earned his stripes as a DJ playing at some of the most respected clubs on the party haven of Ibiza: Privilege, Amnesia and Sankeys to name but a few.

Most recently Josh started his own event Ruckus 24 which has been putting on some incredible parties hosting at unique venues, Mint Warehouse and of course our own Distrikt with an incredible NYE party last year with Julian Perez.

Mix 41 of the Lock-in series welcome April.  April is the pseudonym of Leeds based DJ & promoter, Ben Moulson. Alongside DJing and part of Fortynine / Forrest Road Soundsystem, Ben co-pilots Leeds based techno night ‘Chorus’, a recently launched party, heavily focused on showcasing up & coming UK techno talent.  April curates his sets with a contrast of the old school and the new. Blending quick tempos, gritty textures and uplifting melodies to construct an atmosphere and this mix showcases him in all his strength bringing some much needed energy, techno, rave and hardcore to the series. We're excited to welcome Chorus to Distrikt once clubs can open again, but for now enjoy the mix.
