January 2021 Discoveries.

Many people simply want to hear and enjoy some great new music without having to waste time searching for hours. These Musical Discoveries collections aim to fulfil those needs. At least, we hope so! :)

This playlist is a compilation of the favourite musical discoveries of the Wud Records team from everything they heard at SoundCloud during January 2021.

Tracks have been arranged according to the number of plays at the precise moment of publishing, starting with the fewest. Tracks that are early in playlists tend to receive more plays than later tracks, and we feel that the ones with fewer plays need the best chance of exposure.

This playlist is extremely eclectic, so if the track you are playing isn't quite doing it for you, try the next one. It will probably be completely different.

If you enjoyed listening to something here, please give it a like and a repost. Follow the artist. Give them a shoutout on social media. Check out some of their other tracks. ‘Let The Big Beat Save Your Southern Soul’ is the new single by Tribes of Europe & Barbara Stretch, out 27th November 2020 via Integrity Records on all digital platforms and limited edition 7” vinyl.

Using classic pop forms to tell stories about the present, the future and, in the case of ‘Big Beat …’, the past, Tribes of Europe here surge head-long musically and lyrically into the contemporary cultural legacy of Northern Soul.  With the classic vocal of Barbara Stretch, former frontwoman of Pye Records’ soul sensations The Vernons to the fore, the Ely Fallen Angels Choir led by Max Taylor (MIKA, Lily Allen, Clor) add layers of joyous harmonies.

Tribes of Europe, the alter ego of Fenland-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Martin Elsey, are also joined by Andy Gangadeen (Massive Attack, Chase & Status, Jeff Beck) on drums, Ric Elsworth (Belle & Sebastian, Foals) on vibraphone & tambourine and Chris Taylor (Poison Girls) on co-production duties at Bluebarn Studios and the finest bass outside Motor City.

Martin describes the single as an overdue “thank you” to the rare soul scene and the people who made the music: 

“I was a young Pink Floyd fan when the Northern Soul scene hit East Anglia. Kids at school told me how their older brothers and sisters had been driving over to Peterborough, taking something called ‘Sulphate’ then staying up all night dancing. I was intrigued. Only several years later when I got along to a few all-nighters did I really start to understand …”

Eerie is the second track and probably the most talked about track off BaYaT's second album Purge and carries on from where the debut album So It Begins finished.
From the very start of Eerie you can hear the distinct BaYaT sound with beautiful melancholic harmonies mixed with some real hard rock riffs. The chorus will have you physically moving around the floor with its mouthwatering beat.
Like with most BaYaT's songs, Eerie can be interpreted in various ways, so see it as you will, what you won't be is disappointed.

I wrote this song as a tribute to one of my most inspiring guitar heroes: Pat Metheny.  Its the 6th song off of my 2nd Instrumental album.  :)
